Help me understand the right side steering wheel scroll wheel

When I took deliver of my MS, the girl orienting me to the car mentioned something about the scroll wheel remembering the last thing you did when you press it. I didn't really get in to it then, but now I'm a little lost on this.

I understand the scroll (When you actually scroll) will perform whatever function you were last in (So if in the moonroof menu, it will open/close the moonroof without having to go through the menu.)

But what about when you PRESS the button (Not holding it.) Whenever I press mine, it vents the moonroof. Press it again and it closes. Is this simply because I keep it on the moonroof menu? Is there a way to customize this operation (For example, I'd rather moonroof go to 75% instead of vent.)

Couldn't find anything helpful in the manual and not much on here when I searched. Thanks!

PatD, to change the function of the scroll wheel hold down the button below the scroll wheel then to get to the menu of available scroll wheel functions. Then use the scroll wheel to scroll through the available functionality. To select a function press the scroll wheel.

When the right scroll wheel is set to pano roof, depressing it once will vent the roof if closed. Scrolling will set the width of the opening and depressing when ope will close it.

That's what I'm experiencing then. When the girl told me pressing the scroll would remember what I last did, I either heard wrong or she confused it simply with the fact that it will "vent/close" if on moonroof, whereas if it's on a different function, it has different options. If the last thing I did was open the moonroof to 75% using the scroll, it won't remember that (Which is what I thought she meant and hoped was accurate.)

Thanks for verifying.

Yes

No.

Your assumption above is correct - if the last thing you did was control the panoramic roof then each time you press the scroll wheel it will toggle venting the roof. If the last thing you did was adjust the temperature with the right wheel buttons then momentarily pressing the right scroll wheel will toggle the climate control on/off. If the last thing you did was change media sources then the scroll wheel button toggles a favorite on/off.

Is it just me or is the scroll wheel sense for the roof motion backwards? I always want to turn it upward to close it and downward to open it, because that seems to map better to the motion overhead.

I'll let someone else comment on that because I honestly hardly ever open the roof and when I do it's usually with the touch screen controls. But what you describe sounds like how I would expect it to work too - roll up to close, roll down to open.

Also I might add that as far as the scroll wheel and right steering wheel buttons their operation and behavior have changed over time with firmware releases.

Like you, I rarely open my sunroof. That said, up to close and down to open would also "map" to the behavior of the window controls, which many may consider the pano to be "another window".

I agree with you on this. When trying to use the scroll wheel to open and close the roof, it seems more natural to me to close by scrolling up and open by scrolling down. Once I scroll the wheel and realize nothing is happening, I then have to scroll the other way.

The meaning of the button press does vary depending on what function you last used. When it is on audio it will deselect the current music source from favorites, which I find annoying. I try to remember to leave it on sunroof. I also always spin the wheel the wrong way when I intend to open the sunroof.

I agree with this. And if you accidently press the scroll wheel while it is on the audio menu and you are playing from a favorites on a USB stick it immediately removes that track from your favorites and goes to the next song you have favorited. You then have to go back through the USB files/songs and find it and add it back to your favorites. Very annoying behavior IMO.

So, I try and leave it on the climate control temperature setting. At least in that setting scrolling up raises the temperature and scrolling down lowers it...

Hi Mike,
Was wondering if you could point me in the right direction, I want to invite a group of Tesla owners up for a great weekend here in Cripple Creek, CO for a fun filled weekend!! I'm the group sales coordinator for Wildwood Casino and we are the only ones with a Tesla charging station. We would love to have a group come up and offer a great weekend for all. We would like to set up a photo shoot of the group as well. If you haven't driven up Highway 67 in your Tesla then you need to !! It's amazing and breathe taking at the same time. Would you know how to reach a group of Tesla owners?

The regional forums might be a place to start (Mountain Southwest Regional Forum)

Colorado falls under that forum and I believe there have been events posted there.
