Interesting article in the NY Times today about hands-free cars and the uncertain legal environment.

The article has a great retro video clip from GM (1956) showing the hands-free car of the future (including control towers).
The legal situation is that the NHTSA says they can't regulate the cars and the states are a patchwork (mostly no regulation)... so... the car companies say it isn't prohibited so it's allowed.
Also a demo of Volvo lane following but it's limited to below 30 mph.
