IPhone app for electric cars in the Netherlands

Not quite sure how it works, but it seems to be a useful app.

The New Motion launches an innovative iPhone App designed to help you as the driver of an electric car to take good care of your car’s battery and to navigate to the nearest charging points available. The iPhone App works in combination with a small device installed in your car, which is connected to your car’s internal computer system. The device collects all relevant data from the car and the battery, which you can then access through The New Motion iPhone App.

just a little update from our side. We've just received approval from Apple and the app is live.

There's two basic features: it contains all chargepoints in the Netherlands and it give you remote access to battery status. We're tracking all data from the car and expose it in the iPhone app user interface. This obviously only works if there's a monitoring device in the Tesla (the Tesla doesn't do this out of the box ). Battery status (in percentage) is one of the first things it'll do, but we'll be expanding the feature list in the future (such as push notifications when charging unexpectedly stops).

Hi Alef. Would you consider working with the OpenChargeMap project to ensure the underlying database of charge point locations and capabilities remains open to all? This would enable you to concentrate your efforts on the development of your application rather than producing yet another closed and proprietary database.

Currently, we're working together with a bunch of parties in the NL to get all charging stations in the various apps combined into one database. So in part, this is done already.

Which regions are already in place?

We are working with vendors in the UK, US, France, and Scandinavia. I believe that the majority of sites worldwide will be included once the database goes live.

We are currently working towards agreement on the license that we will adopt for the data. The current favourite is PDDL which allows commercial exploitation;

Once we have agreement on the license then I believe you will see a lot more public activity. The purpose of this exercise is to achieve a standardised description of the charge point capabilities and locations, while preventing duplication of effort by vendors such as yourself. It's clearly madness that we have more than twenty sites worldwide attempting to document the same locations.

I forgot to add that PDDL effectively means "we claim no rights in this data". Therefore there's nothing to "enforce" - anyone can do anything with it.

This license is very attractive to open projects such as OpenStreetMap or third party vendors such as Google.
