Saudi Arabia's Plan to Extend the Age of Oil

"Last week, in a speech in Riyadh, Naimi said Saudi Arabia would stand “firmly and resolutely” with others who oppose any attempt to marginalize oil consumption. “There are those who are trying to reach international agreements to limit the use of fossil fuel, and that will damage the interests of oil producers in the long-term,” he said."

It will be interesting to see if the Saudi plan has a significant effect on demand. We REALLY need a carbon tax... that would completely negate this nefarious plot to keep the world addicted to petroleum. Even without that the odds are good that EVs will be cheaper than ICE in ~10 years add to that the fact that operating costs will ALWAYS be lower and the days of petroleum are numbers. Sooner the better.

Next thing... we need to start planning how to deal with a world where the Saudis don't have the $$$ to bribe their citizens into behaving themselves. Think the mid-east is a mess now? Things are going to get MUCH worse before they get better....

Nwdriver, I agree with you...mostly. I think a huge distinction, and part of winning the rhetorical battle, is that we don't need any "carbon tax" at all, we need a subsidy reduction. Any "carbon tax," that we are likely to see is not going to bring the retail price of carbon in-line with the true costs of carbon, meaning carbon is still subsidized.

This rhetorical strategy is not just that, it also more accurately reflects the real situation. This terminology will help people to realize that the behavior of others has costs for themselves, and almost nobody is OK with that.
