Two New Destination Chargers in Northeast MN!!!

I just want to let everyone know that there are two new Destination Charging sites in northeastern Minnesota. Bearskin Lodge, which is on the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais came online today. I don't know the details of the charger's amperage and usage policies. Bearskin has an HPWC and J1772.

The other Destination, which I have not been given permission to announce, is on Hwy. 61 along Lake Superior and will also have a J1772 and HPWC. Again, I don't have exact details on amps and policies. This site has the hardware on site and told me yesterday that it will be, "installed shortly."

I will update this thread as I have more information. A very big, "thank you" to Bearskin Lodge, the business to be announced, and Adventure Inn in Ely, MN for working to electrify northeastern MN. Thanks to Tesla as well, as the Destination program is really stepping up in the name of electric vehicle travel. I have never seen a company do so much to help make a vision into reality.

If you have never driven these areas...you should. Hwy 61 along Lake Superior and the Gunflint Trail are two beautiful roads to drive, with tons of great recreation, relaxation, outdoor and dining options.

I am working to coordinate a Duluth, MN Destination Charging site as well. Duluth will be Supercharged this year so that is less critical but I am still pursuing that and nearly have a site nailed down.

Thanks and I hope you guys are as excited as me about this!

Evbwcaer,

Are you able to share the location of the second Tesla Destination Charger location yet?

Thanks,

birch

I still don't have permission to say the site for the second charger. I just figure they should give me permission, and I have asked via email, before I spill the beans.

Both sites should be on Tesla's, "Find Us" map in the near future. These are part of the Destination Charger program.

Bearskin's J1772 is at 30 amps and their HPWC is at 40 amps but could go to 62, the electrician and manager need to decide. Bearskin was on Plugshare offering 120v outlets last I checked. I assume they will update that entry.

The 2nd Destination Charger site is Lutsen Resort on Hwy. 61. Lutsen Resort | North Shore MN | Minnesota Resorts. THE CHARGERS ARE NOT LIVE!!!. I'll let you all know when the chargers are live and any other info that I get.

Thanks again to Tesla and Lutsen Resort for helping facilitate EV travel in Minnesota....much appreciated.

That's great! Are there any destination chargers active or planned for Hinkley?

Not to my knowledge. Tobie's parking lot would be a nice place for one. There is a Supercharger on the map for Pine City or Hinckley. I'm hoping for Hinckley, as it puts a little more distance between MSP and the Supercharger, stay out of the taper.

Grand Casino Hinckley has RV hookups, I've never inquired about using them, but 50 amps is not bad..

I did grab a charge (14-50 50amp) at Lake Head Boat Basin, a marina in Canal Park, Duluth. That was a nice option. I just called them and they were cool with it, $5, no formal program or policies.
Canal Park is a nice place to spend some time. There are some lower amperage J1772's near there too.

ZEF Energy is the company installing CHAdeMO chargers at Goodwill stores all over the metro Twin Cities. At a publicity event they had a week ago--getting 100 people to charge at a station in 24 hours, and I think they nearly made it--I picked up one of their flyers that had a map showing a CHAdeMO charger in Pine City. It doesn't show up on Plugshare (whereas the other chargers on the flyer do) so it doesn't appear to be installed yet. They don't have a map of their chargers on their website. I wrote to them asking if they could tell me when the charger in Pine City would be ready, but I haven't heard back yet.

Evbwcaer, how long did it take to get the chargers installed at these hotels? I recall you mentioning something about them vaguely last fall (don't I?).

I was told by ZEF to expect progress toward Duluth this year.

It was me working on these chargers last fall. Tesla moves quickly, the challenge was finding businesses to be host sites, and getting electricians out to do proposals and installation. When I first started working on this the businesses were going to be on the hook for half the HPWC cost, which was $1,200 at the time, plus install, and no J1772. Tesla vastly sweetened the deal with the revised Destination Charger program and that helped get businesses of the fence which was great. Adventure Inn was always enthusiastic and proactive, even with the original pricing they were about 99% in (they have SIP construction, solar water heating, and other sustainability initiatives.)

As I said before, I have a great prospect in Duluth, its kind of on their back burner but I believe it will happen.

I think all media attention Tesla gets helped the businesses to realize that EV's are a big part of the future and the chance to get properly equipped at no/low cost will not last forever.

Grand Superior Lodge just came on Plugshare with an HPWC and J1772! It does not say what amperage they are installed at. Regardless, this is great news and yet another chance to say, "Thanks" to Tesla. They have really covered NE Minn and Lutsen Resort is not even live.

Thanks also to Grand Superior Lodge!

I am going to make a trip to Bearksin, since l was last there there will be a Supercharger and three Destination sites that were not in place previously....talk about progress.

Was hoping to go up to Lutsen / Grand Marais area this fall. Since Grand Superior and Caribou Highlands are the same folks I was hoping that Caribou would be close behind Grand Superior but no dice (and so no trip there this fall or winter). Grand Superior is too far south for fall and skiing trips.

I'm not seeing Adventure Inn or Lutsen Resort on plugshare nor can I find anything else about either having EV charging. FTM, has Adventure Inn changed their name? Has anyone used either?

You must have the settings wrong on Plugshare. Adventure Inn is there and so is Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. In my opinion, the Gunflint is the best, my recommendation is Bearskin if you're going to be in the Grand Marais area.
