Volunteer of the Year: Sarasota Dolphin Research Program's Nigel Mould

Our Volunteer of the Year helps keep local environmental organizations afloat.

When he decided to volunteer for Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, Nigel Mould jumped in with both feet—literally. Since 2010, Mould has spent upwards of 300 hours a year in soaking-wet volunteerism—swimming next to 400-pound distressed dolphins, hauling and mending research nets and doing whatever else is needed to help the natural environment.

Mould grew up swimming and boating in England, where, he says, “You can never be very far from the ocean.” When he retired from his career as CEO of an international cosmetics company and moved his family to Sarasota, he quickly realized that his experience on the water could be an asset for SDRP, the world’s longest-running wild dolphin research program. Mould also contributes hundreds of hours to Mote Marine Laboratory, Catholic Charities and other local nonprofits.

Sounding very much like a former CEO, Mould can speak expertly about the economic benefits of Sarasota Bay, the far-reaching importance of long-term research programs, and the convenience of committing to solar power and electric cars. But his connection to the cause comes from his heart as well as his head.

He recently learned that a dolphin calf he’d helped rescue last winter was spotted alive and well. “It’s the best feeling,” he says of the news. “The reward may not be immediate. You help a dolphin, it doesn’t turn around and say, ‘Thank you.’ Still, when you hear he’s healthy, you say to yourself, ‘That cold, wet, miserable day in the water—that was worth it.’”

Nigel's departure as a moderator is a loss for us, but the upside is that perhaps few more dolphin calves will roam the oceans.

Some parting hugs and kisses for Nigel

So long! And thanks for all the fishes.
So long! They really were delicious.

So long! And thanks for all the fish.
So sad! That it should come to this.

Pleasure to have met you at Teslive and to have contributed to the first Tesla Charger at Mote Lab. Best of luck with your primary career, I sure can appreciate how much this can easily side track one from what one was doing. You were a really good moderator (moderate)!

Don't be a stranger to the forum and best with the solar project at home.

This well-deserved thanks tribute to Nigel brings to mind the indebtedness we share to our TMC vocal early leaders, such as TEG, Bonnie, Brianman, Cingery and many others... Thanks to you all for keeping us sane while we waited for delivery. Helping us decide on features to order. Providing us with descriptions of your vehicles and impressions and problems with Tesla and the cars. You are pioneers. Voices in the internet wilderness. Mental health workers.

Think of where electric vehicles and we all will be in 20 years. These early passionate people who shared their experiences with us will have made palpable change happen.

Specifically to Nigel, last week I gave you reputation points for the way you moderated. It was well deserved. Thanks for your time and passion. Wishing you well. Come back soon.

We are all better off because you have been here with us. Thank you.

& you know, that Model X sub forum is going to explode soon enough! Come back around, it will be entertaining :smile:ML

Just saw this. Really sorry to see you go! Not sure I could say anything more than the many kudos that precede this but you will be missed. Good luck with your future endeavors!
Great opportunity to thank all the moderators. You do an excellent job!
