Why wouldn't Toyota (or, any car manufacturer) not sell as many as they could on a new model? They have to recoup some ten-ish $m on the drive train development contract with Tesla. Only possible explanation for me is, at $49,900 they still lose money on every car sold. What gives?

According to Elon, cost could be reduced very much if volumes were larger.
Buying an EV is one thing, being able to drive it beyond city limits another...

I have heard that it has cost GM ~$7200/car in advertising to sell the Volt thus far.

Toyota seems to have a winner here. No need for superbowl ads.

My assumption has always been that they are scared of their customers (the dealers) push back. EVs will cause a large number of car dealers to go out of business because many rely on the parts and service revenue streams for most of their profits. Toyota does not want to lose the parts revenue stream so they are doing everything possible to slow the adoption of electric vehicles.

Maybe Tesla can rebadge it, and sell it in their stores

I think the RAV4 EV, as others have stated, is a compliance car for Cali. There are numerous reasons:

    1. Toyota isn't sure of the demand for such a vehicle. IMO this is a bit short-sighted, because I'm betting a lot of soccer moms would love this vehicle.
    2. Fear of push-back from dealers who don't want to spend the money training their techs for, at least initially, rare service calls. They also don't want to have to train their sales staff as well. Plus, as mentioned, the loss of service/parts business.

If they sell out of their cars in California relatively quickly, perhaps they'll ramp up production. We can only hope.

Nissan Bringing All-Electric Compact SUV Concept To Paris Motor Show

    Toyota gave Nissan some idea!

If Toyota is really going to sell the Rav4EV, it coold keep priusowners and old RavEv owners, instead of sending them every time to Nissan!

Nissan is doing a pretty good job of alienating Prius owners and sending them to Tesla.
