Vendor 2015 Black Model S P85D New Car Prep <--- This one was pretty bad

2015 Tesla Model S P85D in for our Ultimate New Car Prep. I performed a Paint Correction, Gtechniq Crystal Serum/EXOv2 protective coating application, coating on glass, leather trim, carpet and wheels.

The car had been driven for a week before it was brought to our detail studio in Sarasota.

This was the result of a scratch repair at the factory. The combination of an aggressive pad and compound left this long wide mark on the hood. Thankfully I was able to polish off the damage.

It's not how good your car looks when it's done but the steps that were taken to get it there.
Many detailers who charge a low fee tend to use low quality products that have fillers in it. This polishes will NOT remove scratches, it will only fill in the scratches temporarily. When a protective coating such as Opti Coat Pro or Gtechniq is applied over this low quality products, it will cause the coating to fail prematurely. Costing you more money on the long run.

Is this typical of other manufacturer's fresh from the factory vehicles as well, or is Tesla just continuing to drop the ball on delivery prep? I'm assuming at least some of this was the result of poor detailing at the local SC where the car was delivered?

Unfortunately, this is typical. it seems nowadays the more you pay for a car the more defects the paint has. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royce and Bentley are a few examples of cars that I'm experienced with and they all come with a less than desirable finish. Unqualified "detailers" at dealerships or at the SC don't make things better either, they add more scratches to the paint with the stuff they use.

I also did it again after about 5 months and I plan to do this every 5-6 months since the glass coating wears off. From my research, 22ple VX1 Pro got the best reviews and it's really easy to apply, even easier than waxing, and you can't see any swirls or lines at all, plus the shine is amazing.

Beautiful work. Is color a factor in the brand choice between the various coating products (for example, OptiCoating vs. CQuartz). What are the key factors?

before recommending coatings to my customers there are many factors that I put in consideration such as budget, preference when it comes to gloss, how long will the customer keep the car, driving environment, and the last thing is color of the car.

22PLE should last you longer than 5-6 months. It should be at least 1yrs. I get a year and a half with 22PLE VX1 Pro on a daily driven vehicle. You might want to look into Gloss Coat from Optimum..it last 2yrs, nice gloss

I would like to clarify one item. I can see that careless detailing at the factory and/or service center or by the owner could account for the swirls and scratches. However, this car has paint overspray. Is it your opinion that the Tesla factory is frequently responsible for this type of overspray damage, and not some local paint shop that say was hired after delivery to paint the calipers, etc?

I find it unlikely that Tesla is responsible for the overspray damage since if I discovered that the factory had damaged my paint by doing a repair then I wouldn't have to go pay a top notch paint correction specialist such as yourself to correct it. I would expect Tesla to correct it or pay for your services. Make sense?

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know it would last that long. When I re-applied it, it still looked good.

That really is awesome work you do.

By the way, what is your opinion on glass coating vs. a wrap? You really can't get that kind of shine with a wrap, and they are much more expensive, but I guess the durability factor for chips etc. is what makes a wrap more appealing? For me, however, nothing beats the shine of a glass coating.

You make a great point Larry. I believe the owner was not aware of any damage to the car prior to the delivery which leads me to believe the repair was done at the factory. I've heard the service center let the owners know when their car has arrived with any damage that requires a respray somewhere. I'm sure he can contact Tesla or go to the SC and raise hell to get reimbursed for my services and I will be more then happy to write up an invoice for it.

A wrap offers the highest level of protection. It protects the paint from damages caused by impact such as small rocks, etc. A protective coating is to protect the vehicle from dirt particles that adhere to the paint and build up causing it to dull and lose it luster. It also protects against bird dropping and bug damage. The coating also makes the maintenance of the car so much easier than a wrap.

For our clients who just want the absolute best finish and they want it to last without any worries we offer to wrap the entire car with PPF aka Clear Bra after a full paint correction has been done. Once wrapped, I apply a protective coating to make the maintenance of the wrap as effortless as possible. It'll also extend the life of the wrap.

This Ferrari is a fine example of what we're able to do. You can stand in front of this car and you will not know it's been fully wrapped.

As this P85D owner, I am most satisfied with Pete's work on my car. The damage pictures document the attention to detail he provides while examining and repairing the coat prior to providing the top glass coating. After 5 days on the road the dirt and bugs wipe away with a wet cloth, as Pete promised. The results are absolutely superb. Very much worth the expense! The car glows in the dark:biggrin:.

Larry, I will follow up with Tesla Tampa on your suggestion and report back.

Thanks to the pictures Pete to document the delivery paint condition Tesla Motors has agreed to accept responsibility for the correction services on my car. The Tesla Tampa service manager stated that he wants to keep his customer happy, which he certainly has. Although not in the photos, the Tesla emblem on the bullnose was also heavily scratched, He also agreed to replace the bullnose. I must issue great praise to both First Impressions and to the Tesla organization for their superb professionalism. Well done!
