Additionally, an over-the-air firmware upgrade to the power electronics will improve P85D performance at high speed above what anyone outside Tesla has experienced to date.

Interesting to see what type of software upgrade besides raising the limiter.
Active suspension ? Boost function ?

Gizmonty you were right. My dashboard now shows 'late August' for the delivery date. No explanation from tesla.

Tesla's inability to meet self-set deadlines is depressingly predictable. My delivery date went from May to 4th quarter to 3rd quarter to December to 'maybe next week'. I suspect it comes from the top with Elon having a reputation for setting profoundly unrealistic deadlines to 'motivate' people. It looks like I'll be picking my car up from some lonely vehicle logistics centre in Altona when it finally does arrive. I wonder if there will actually be someone from Tesla there to give it to me - I have my doubts.

I have several colleagues who were Tesla-curious but who now don't want anything to do with them based on my experience. It's a shame. Perhaps they'll improve once they've worked through the initial delivery glut and built out the Melbourne service centre.

Oh no, same here. When did you confirm your order?

It's also no longer asking me to pick up from Melbourne… not sure if that's good or bad :p

My original order was a P85, confirmed 7/8/14.
Changed to a P85D when they 'grandfathered out' the P85. Confirmed 13/11/14.

Though I'm no expert in the area, it seems that publicly listed companies in the U.S. are constantly 'managing' their quarterly forecasts to satisfy wall street, particularly if they have debt secured against their stock and are therefore extra sensitive to price fluctuations. Perhaps this results in over-promising and under-delivering? Either way, it does erode confidence.

Re the D: I think you are being unrealistic expecting any company to have hard deadlines 8-9 months ahead for a brand new model that, when you put your order in, was not even in production.

Tesla give you an estimation that is subject to change. I guess the alternative is to say "last half of 2015" and then not bother with being specific until the date gets closer.

In regards to the S85/P85 I think the delays were the result of several issues:

- They took time to understand the Australian business and regulatory environment.

- I suspect that sales have outstripped their expectations and they have decided to move from a small sales/support structure to a full sales/service model

- Tesla decided to withdraw Sigs and delay the launch. If the older spec Sig and initial production models were released this would have caused a significant PR disaster and a poorer experience for the new owners. I think most owners were happy that their car was delayed and they received the higher spec car.

- The revamped factory took longer to ramp up than scheduled, followed by transport delays (a hurricane followed by a waterfront strike) and then the Christmas shutdown in Aust that caused local transport problems. BTW - this is another local knowledge issue - shutdowns of this length don't occur in US or Europe.

- Really part of the first point - they had lots of systems to put in place that they had not even realised they needed - and lots of rewrites to correct paperwork etc. Once they have their systems formalized and the wrinkles ironed out our experience will be better.

There is always debate about waiting for Tesla to be on the ground or accepting delivery from a temporary venue. I was more than happy to accept my car off the back of a truck, and I have been getting great fun over the last 3 weeks!

Would any other car built to your spec (actually identified on the production line) be any different? My first RX8 was ordered before the release date - I had many of the same uncertainties re delivery.

Tesla can respond to this angst in two ways - it can close up communications and give very approximate or vague delivery date but basically tell us nothing, or two, continue to provide its best estimates. Tesla could improve their communication by stating more clearly that these are estimates and subject to change.

I have been trying to encourage Tesla to keep us informed of issues as they arise - the idea is that, if we are kept informed we will at least be aware of the issues even if disappointed. I personally would much rather have an estimate that keeps changing as circumstances change as long as I am kept informed. This means us accepting that things CHANGE!

Cheers
Higgy

PS As part owner of a small specialised manufacturer I also have the same issues with delivery dates. There is always something unforseen that impacts on the development/delivery of new products, particularly to new markets.

Higgy I think the way you have described the situation, you really understand it very well. I totally agree, I don't mind waiting longer for the D, if that's what it takes. Delays for all the reasons you mentioned are understandable in my mind. Bringing it all together with the implementation of so many new technologies and processes, I think a few weeks or even a month or 2 isn't really a big deal. Bigger deal will be the SC rollout, a well practised process around the world, so quite the opposite in terms of timing expectations.
