There does not seem to be a thread devoted to the "Coming soon" Supercharger in the Manteca CA area so I thought I would start one. That location is of particular interest to me as an SF Bay Area resident who likes to make trips to the Yosemite region.

The dot on the official Tesla Supercharger map seems to located somewhere in or near Manteca near the intersection of the 99 and 120 freeways.

If there are any Model S owners in that area who could keep their eyes open regarding potential locations or signs of construction activity and post about it here I would appreciate it.

Other 'soon' locations were found via some type of public records search -- the permits involved in putting in a location.

I'm not aware of how that is done however. But am interested in this Manteca location because it puts round trips to relatives in Modesto-Merced area in easy reach with a short stop in Manteca on the way there and/or back. Also helps with the long stretch between north Sacramento and the Harris Ranch supercharger.

I sent Tesla an email about 2 months ago offering up a property i have in Lathrop (next to Manteca) on the corner of 120, 99, and 5 which I thought was an ideal location. Told them they could use for free and that I have swing with the city council and mayor so could make it happen quickly. Got a reply saying they are working on something in Manteca....

Would you mind sending a follow up email just to confirm that Tesla is moving forward with the other location? Things seem to be fast and furious at times with the Supercharger rollout and it wouldn't surprise me if something fell through and they lost track of your prior (very generous) offer.

i will being its been so long since there has been any movement on this subject.

Many thanks for posting. That would make perfect sense to put a Supercharger there. Crossing my fingers they can make headway with this before summer.

It's a convenient location near the I-5 / Highway 120 interchange, but it's an industrial park so there are no facilities (bathrooms, restaurants) anywhere near there. I'd say it's a prime candidate for a temporary mobile supercharger setup until they can get something installed at a mall in Manteca.

Probably not too much different than the SCs at the Fremont factory. There isn't much to do there either, but those SCs get plenty of action even beyond those taking factory delivery.

Ironically, it's close to In'N'Out Burger's warehouse, and Del Monte's across the road.

Been lurking quite a while, but first post here (I normally post at Mynissanleaf.com and other EV websites. The Model S is too rich for me, and I'll have to wait for the Model 'Y' to replace my Forester). I live in the Bay Area, and frequently go to Yosemite. While Lathrop isn't too far off route on the 580/205/5/99/120 route to Yosemite, It seems to me it's too far west for people, especially those in 60s, heading up 120 to Tuolumne Meadows (143 miles, 8,600 feet of climb) and/or over Tioga Pass to Lee Vining (162 miles, 9,900+ feet of climb) instead of just Yosemite Valley, and really too far south of Corning (170 miles) to be comfortable year-round at the speed limit with any degradation. Ca. 100 mile spacing with adjustments for elevation would seem to be preferable to handle S60s, Model Es and subsequent '200 mile' cars. And there definitely needs to be an SC in Lee Vining for people coming back from the East side, cause Bishop is likely too far south.

Welcome, GRA. Good post; thanks!

Yes, tried a couple of these scenarios at evtripplanner.com and it looks like we really need two SCs on the route to Yosemite. And, given the scarce destination charging options in and around the park, it's still a dicey proposition overall.

Welcome to TMC! Good first post, much better than mine anyway. There is no doubt that with the distances and elevation gains you're talking about for routes instead of Yosemite Valley, a 60 wouldn't be able to do that without another charging stop somewhere. If someone really wants to drive those kind of distances, they'll need an 85 or wait for more charging instrastructure.

Edit: Dang, GG beat me to the punch. I agree with his post although I thought Yosemite Valley was within reach of Manteca and/or Lathrop even for a 60? It's only 115 miles or so from Manteca to the Ahwahnee Hotel in the middle of the Valley.

Thanks for the kind welcome! I'd think if you take it easy on 120, take Old Priest Grade and keep your speed at or below the park limit (45 mph) you could make it in good to ideal conditions, i.e. limited use of heat/defrost, but you do have to climb to 6,000 feet at Crane Flat before dropping 2,000 feet to the Valley.

Ultimately, they'd need SCs on all four gateway routes. SCs along S.R. 99 at Manteca/Merced/Fresno are too far west for points east of Yosemite Valley, and Manteca and maybe Fresno are pushing it for the Valley owing to the extra 2,000 feet of climb (but you lose it again) compared to 140 from Merced; putting SCs along/near S.R. 49 at Groveland (120), Mariposa (140) and Oakhurst (41), plus Lee Vining (120 East) would provide better coverage, but the problem is usage would be very seasonal, and finding sufficient power might be a problem. And putting SCs inside the park seems problematic, as they're a proprietary standard.

For 120, putting the SC 20 miles east of Manteca at Oakdale would help for the Valley, but I think it might still be marginal going up to the high country. Yosemite Junction 25 miles east of Oakdale would be an ideal location, except AFAIK there's nothing there anymore (there used to be a gas station/ restaurant and tourist info center, but the station/restaurant closed years ago). Groveland is the best location for those going to Yosemite, but not for other routes east of Oakdale.

I suspect the best compromise to serve the widest area would be at Jamestown about 3-5 miles east of Yosemite Junction, either at the Chicken Ranch Casino or else downtown Jamestown. Chicken Ranch would have the power, but would probably want to install HPWCs rather than SCs; after all, they want people to stay awhile. But either location not only covers all of Yosemite (needing just a minor detour), they would also cover 108 past Sonora (Dodge Ridge/Pinecrest, Sonora Pass, and Bridgeport), and 4 via Angel's Camp (Calaveras Big Trees, Mt. Reba/Bear Valley/Lake Alpine, Ebbett's Pass and Markleeville, maybe South Lake Tahoe and Minden).

For the North/South I-5 route, Lodi (I-5 at S.R. 12) is more central between Corning (147 miles) and Harris Ranch (152) miles, although the segments are still a bit long for 60s in less than ideal conditions. You probably need two SCs at about 100 mile intervals, say Woodland and Ingram Canyon Rd. south of Tracy/Vernalis on I-5.
