I must confess I have a hard time following this line of argument:
1) VW and GM are developing new battery technologies. (It will surely work, be commercially viable and available soon).
2) Tesla is developing graphene battery technology, but it is uncertain if it will work.
3) Gigafactory will take 3 years to become operational, so there is plenty of time to competitors to develop.

To me it seems that Tesla is miles ahead, offering one of the few cars that is attractive under current technology and has already investments in place to go to a whole new scale of production in the next few years (500K/year).Whenever any other technology proves itself viable, it will still take at least an extra 3 years to develop large scale manufacturing and investors willing to invest something around $5 billions to make it operational.This gives Tesla a nice comfortable lead in the market. The only real competitor up until now is Nissan, with a very different market strategy.
