Adding a HPWC to your build question

So I finalized our order about a week ago and have a late Feb 2015 delivery date.

After some help from the forums, I am realizing I should've added a HPWC to my order for home charging as that will be where 98% of charging will happen. Per the accessory website, the warranty is significantly different if purchased over the counter or bundled with your car (1yr vs 4yr). I can't find a way to add one to my order now that it is finalized so I have a call in to my sales advisor (apologies if there is a more official Tesla term for this person that I am not aware of) to see if it can be added as part of the car purchase so I get the extra 3yr warranty. He is currently following up on this with HQ to see "if" this can be done.

In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone else successfully added a HPWC after their order was locked in and got it with the 4yr warranty? If so, please provide details.

EDIT: I am only interested in the HPWC as a permanent mounted system for charging at home (not for the extra charging capabilities). This will allow me to leave the UMC in the car at all times and only use when we travel or in the event the HPWC malfunctions and doesn't work.

Yea, they should be able to help you add it on since it's not technically part of the vehicle.

That is what I was thinking but was a little concerned when my advisor sounded uncertain.

Just because you're mostly charging at home doesn't necessarily mean you need a HPWC. You need it if you have to charge at home quickly to go back out the same day after driving a long distance, rather than just charging overnight. Then you would need the dual chargers (which I don't see in your configuration in your signature) along with HPWC, so you can charge at up to 80A rather than 40A. Many (probably the majority) of us do just fine with a 14-50 outlet in the garage and leave the UMC plugged into it and hanging on the wall, just taking it with us if we are going out of town.

Racer, it really depends on your lifestyle with respect to the "do I need a HWPC" question...if your plans change frequently and you need to recover charge quickly (as I do), then you will want the dual chargers in your car and a HWPC...I don't like waiting...

Thanks. I am aware of that info and do not have dual chargers as you indicated. I just want a permanent mounted system at home so we can leave the UMC in the car at all times. It just provides my wife with piece of mind and since the HPWC is only $100 more I figure why not. It looks better and, from what most are saying, is more durable than a UMC. I am going to add a plug to the end of it and just plug it in the 14/50 outlet I am having installed in my garage. I'll only charge at 40amps but with our driving that won't be an issue. Plus, if the HPWC ever craps out I can just unplug it and use the UMC.

Sounds like a good plan. My UMC has never left the trunk, so I always will have it if the unexpected occurs.

You can add it after you order.

I ordered and confirmed way back in August and asked my delivery specialist to add the HPWC after the price decreased. They'll add it to your build sheet that you'll see on your dashboard.

Where do you see its $100 more? It's $750.
Also regarding peace of mind, if you charge at a public j1772 know that it just uses the adapter, not the UMC.

He's referring to the difference in price between a HPWC and a replacement Mobile Connector.

UMC is $650. HPWC is $750. Hence, the HPWC is $100 more.

Don't forget to include installation costs in your calcs. For the HPWC, you need large guage wire than a 14-50 outlet. If your run is long, then the cost adds up for more copper and labour for the install.

the original poster already addresed that issue, he's planning on using it at 40A, and just installing a 14-50 plug on it, and plugging it into a 14-50 outlet. Home Depot/Lowes have molded 4-6' replacement oven/range cords for $25-30, that would be the simplest solution, just ignore(wire nut)/cutoff the white nuetral.
