Until very recently (2-3 days ago), I could've sworn S60 and S80 (non-D) models showed a December or late-December delivery on the configurator. Now, they have both moved to March (85D still shows late-February and P85D is still December).

Is there a major problem with the non-D production now, or has Tesla decided to stop all non-D models until the P85D and 85D orders are caught up with?

Has to be this. They've loaded the pipeline with so many D orders that there's probably no production capacity left till March.

And don't forget that almost all production in the 1st and 2nd months of the quarter (Jan/Feb) goes to cars for overseas delivery. That way they can get those cars delivered to customers (and booked for revenue) in the third month of the quarter. Plus they need to replenish the US inventory of loaner cars that they sold during the end of quarter push in the prior quarter.

After a hard finish to the year, I expect the plant will do a normal about 1 week close the first few days of January for a labor rest. We all expect them to be producing and delivering US orders through new years eve. January to be overseas order production and then US pick up again after that. March makes sense to be the new target. It switched to December in August. It should stay March until February.

@dennis, you are kind of implying that Tesla sells 2/3 overseas but that is not the case. I expect part of this to also be building of Model X Beta units for shipment to stores for test drives. Higher margin and higher revenue cars will always come first. D option initially was $4k but bumped to $5k shortly after it was seen to be popular.

-Or enough conversions to D orders happened that the number of unspoken for, non-AWD cars (that are still coming off the line), is high enough that they hope to persuade buyers with "inventory" over custom-made "March".

-Or, another thought is hitting the "28% margin" guidance, by pushing the lower margin cars out of the quarter you promised it in, and pumping up P85D production.

Either way, sympathies to those configuring their ideal Model S, whose wait just grew by 3 months.
