BBC News - Detroit motor show goes electric

The first Detroit motor show after US carmakers General Motors and Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy opens later.

The event, which is set to premiere 60 new models, remains the most important motor show in the US, in spite of the crisis that has rocked the industry.
Electric cars are to take centre stage, as Detroit tries to reinvent itself as a base for new automotive technologies.

Small petrol-powered cars are also due to be popular, a shift from previous years when large cars dominated.

Is it just me or is the UK car market very much the same as the US market? Looking at the Norwegian prices the Avensis costs about 5% more in basic trim than the Prius.
Looking at the Dutch prices the Prius starts out at just €400 more than the Avensis so pretty equal (and I think the basic Prius has better equipment than basic Avensis).
Using the UK prices it's almost a £3000 difference to the Avensis.
While in the US it's about a $3000 between the Camry and Prius to the Camry.

It's interesting since the Prius in Norway competes on price with cars like the basic Avensis or the higher speced VW Golf. Which of course makes the Prius a lot better deal.

The strategy is, “If I’m forced to produce these green cars, let’s figure out a way to make money and make a splash,” Mr. Toprak said.

TESLA MODEL S Using a $465 million federal green-car loan, Tesla expects to start building the sleek $50,000 Model S sedan in late 2011. Buyers can choose three levels of power, including a standard lithium-ion battery pack with a 160-mile range that lets the Model S run from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in 5.6 seconds. For more money, owners can have 230- or 300-mile battery packs.

This one needs a thread here:
