Road trip from Tilburg to Malta - Blog

Hi Everyone,

I'll be doing a road trip in the Tesla from Tilburg to Malta with my nearly 5 year old daughter. It might be a bit challenging/ambitious but worth it :)

Here is the start of my blog. We depart Aug 24th and pick up the Tesla on the 26th. We'll be posting lots of updates and pictures. Figured it might be of interest to other Tesla fans.

Will not read. Pure envy

(Have fun!! Let me know if you need a nice B&B near Lago Maggiore where you can charge at 16A (red CEE plug). These people are really very nice, cook a great breakfast, went to Enel to get an EnelDrive charge card especially for me though I did not ask, which I still borrow from them. In case you might need it, I may be allowed to hand it to you when you're in NL, instead of sending it back to them first).

Like Kees is saying: envy you !!

Had a look at your blog - from the pure pleasure of driving the Model S I can understand you plan to go through Zwitserland and France following the Superchargers. But from a charging-the-car perspective it definitely is no problem at all to go much more directly following the line Egerkingen-Milan-Genova. Even without superchargers. Would save quite some time... Let me know if you're interested and I share you the details about charging options ..

BTW - getting an Enel card now is pretty simple - and they are also available for non-Italian.

Enjoy !

Hi Edi and Keezje,

Thank you for the information. What is the method to obtain an Enel card now? That would be fantastic as I would/could make many trips through Italy.

Is it possible to get before my Trip on Tuesday?

I appreciate the advice a lot. I was considering a direct route through Italy but then thought that a scenic route via Switzerland might be nice. I imagine that the Dorno charger might just be ready by beginning of September as well.

Keezje, I'll PM you tomorrow about possibly grabbing that ENEL card from you if I cannot obtain my own:) I'll be in Utrecht on Sunday

Sometimes the answer is just one click away -;). You might be able to make an appointment and pick up the card in one of their offices.

Understand your thoughts about the scenic route ! I passed the Goddard pass two weeks ago - much fun it was !
Nevertheless - if you change your mind.. you could follow Egerkingen-Bellinzona (Benjaminn Hotel)-Milan (IKEA)-Genova.. and charge for free at the hotel and IKEA, bringing you straight to your boat. There are a couple of alternatives (plan b -;) as well.

Hi Guys,

I have slight anxiety about the Palermo-Pozzallo leg which is 311 km. Should I be concerned? I'd have a full charge but there are no planned opportunities for me to charge in Sicily. I have no real world driving experience in the Tesla so I am trying to be somewhat conservative.

Based on http://www.daglievemensen.nl/tesla/hoogte.htm (bookmark!) this would take 70kW Typical based on 357 km (taking into account uphill costs and/downhill benefits). Can be done if you have the 85 battery, but make sure to use LuckyLuke's advise on this, then you should not have to worry.

I don't know the conditions of the roads there, but if you cut off by using the A19 and SS626 you only have to go 277 km lenghtening your trip by about 30 minutes.

Catania (210 from Palermo) has two Enel charging points - you would need a Hera charge card for that. But as LuckyLuke is rightly saying - start with full-load and drive not faster than 95-100 to start with.

It seems there are also several alternatives at Renault or Nissan in or around Catania. Have a look at this site with charge points in Italia.
All together - should be no problem.

Normally, it's advisable to not sit with a full 100% range charge for too long. I'd ask your delivery specialist in Tilburg wheter it will harm your batteries to have the car 100% full on the ferry for nearly a day.

My rule of thumb: When on a road trip, don't be afraid to do a range charge. I might need those extra kWh. But then again, I'll always use the car within max an hour after a full 100% range charge.

I've driven from Palermo to south-east Sicily and back a couple of times, though not yet with my Model S. Sure, the motorway to Catania, Siracusa and Avola will be faster, and the view of Etna is always nice. But taking off near Enna and then taking the country road past Piazza Armerina and Gela, and then maybe the road next to the sea through Santa Croce Camerina and Marina di Ragusa is quite nice, a bit shorter, though slower.

The uphill stretch of the A19 from Termini Imrese at sea level to Enna (elevation 900m) will probably be nerve-wrecking, as the energy meter in the Model S will probably predict a high kwH/km usage, and shorter and shorter range left for the car. You'll get some of that energy back on the downhill stretch after Enna.

One trick worth remembering is that marinas often have red 380V-400V three phase sockets, and they will often be happy to sell you some juice. The porto turistica at Licata or Marina di Ragusa might be of interest. Might be wise to call ahead to check if they can accomodate your car now in August and have an 16A 380V red socket available. If you only have the UMC and the red adapter, you will only get approx 50km of range per hour charge on a 16A 380V red socket. (If you have a 22kW portable wallbox you could have got 100km of range per hour on a 32A 380V red socket.)

Speeds higher than 80-100km will cost you some range. AC will also cost you range but is *essential* in Sicily in August, and rolling down the windows while driving will cost you more. You might want to put your car in range mode (will reduce power usage and effectiveness of your AC), and put the air suspension in low position, to save power.

You will be nervous when testing the range of a brand new car driving through places without much charging infrastructure. That's only natural. I took my Model S on a drive through Denmark on my first week, with wife and small kids, with headwind and rain, before there were superchargers or even 11kW chargers in most of Jylland. It makes for a good story now.

Also: Remember that the Model S is *wide*, and the streets of historic Sicilian towns can be *narrow*. Don't get any scratches from the careless Italian motorists.

Hi Fredag,

Thank you for the informative post. I'll be reviewing it tomorrow heavily.

i was able to obtain an enel card and will be able to charge easily in Sicily. My main Sicily concern now is as low stress drive as possible to get to the final ferry in pozzallo. I have to spend one night in Sicily.

I am looking at Airbnb for accommodations. Since you've been there, Would you have any recommendations that would be easy for both parking and arrival in the tesla?

so far so good. I've arrived in bad schonboern and will be doing the next leg to Switzerland tomorrow and onwards to genoa. I've updated my blog regularly.

It's been great so far.

Great that you've obtained the Enel card. That will make it so much easier for you to charge halfway in Catania.

I can recommend Hotel Kalura in Cefalú. Spacious parking lot. But not quite walking distance to the town. Don't know if they offer charging.

Do not attempt to drive through Cefalú's old town (Via Vittorio Emanuele) with the Tesla, you'll get stuck. :)

If you plan to stop for sightseeing, Siracusa (Piazza Duomo in Ortigia) and Noto (Corso Vittorio Emanuele) are highly recommended sights on the way to Pozzallo.

Hi everyone,

I've made it to Cefalu! The trip was flawless except for the ferry situation.
it was pretty awful and stressful boarding and departing. Communication was a huge issue. I have 300km range and am planning to charge at the hera station at ikea with the enel card I obtained (thanks Keezje!)in Catania.

everything I've read says that you can use an enel card at a hera station. Can anyone confirm that's the case so I can rest easy?

made it and it works! We are charging for our final leg (100km) to the malta ferry. Success

Seen your updated blog now as well.. you made it to the south already !
Still - just curious - did you have the same Hera card or is its special Enel card ?
Stil can not figure out but it seems both companies are working on this interoperable.

Hi - great you almost made it !
IKEA Catania has two charge options - the Asset Provider is Enel Distribuzione (following the Hera information). If you have the card below I'm sure you'll be able to charge. Otherwise you should obtain one at the customer service.
