Superchargers aren't free!!!

I finally took my Model S on a long road trip and using the superchargers for the first time. I went from Columbus, OH to Milwaukee, WI!
I went to 2 superchargers on the way up and each time the supercharger cost me money.
The first supercharger we stopped at had a Barnes and Nobel. My wife decided to buy some books costing me $30! Not too bad.
The second supercharger was at an outlet mall!!! My wife ended up buying clothes for our son and ended up spending $200!!!
Luckily on the way back down one supercharger was at a service center and the second at a restaurant with no shopping areas around.
Despite the supercharger being free I think it cost me more money than an ICE car!!
May have to second think bringing my wife on my road trips!!!

Has this happened to anyone else?
I think this info would be very helpful for Tesla to push businesses to put superchargers on their properties.

About a year from now (or in 2016 at the latest),those businesses are going to do all they can (cover/share/pay for certain costs) to attract Tesla Motors to put superchargers on their particular properties once the numbers of Tesla EV's on the road get significantly higher and higher. Just like those 5 US states that want Tesla Motors to realise the Gigafactory in their particular state. That is at a completely different level, but there is a kind of a similarity there, I think. No kidding.

One of the best supercharger neighbors can be found at the Albany, NY location: a brand new Whole Foods. A great place to grab a healthy lunch. Too bad fast food is the only option at many supercharger locations.

But the clothes were on sale. She saved you money. Therefore, the superchargers SAVED you money.

Sheez.

Good way to think about it bonnie! Glass is half full!!

And at Port St. Lucie, FL, Friday's gives you a 25% discount if you are Supercharging!

Someone else mentioned about discounts. How do you find out about these discounts? Do they advertise this somewhere near the charger?

Great opportunity for in-app advertising within the Tesla App. You plug in to the supercharger and the app informs you that you have a coupon for a discount or a special at a nearby business. Might not be worth Tesla's time to add this capability from a revenue stream standpoint, but would help increase acceptance of Supercharger locations by local businesses if it gives them an opportunity to do inexpensive highly-targeted advertising to a desirable demographic.

Superchargers aren't the problem. Slow chargers are.

In Shelton, WA there are very few charging locations. One of the easier ones to find (thank you plugshare, I think...) is a Chargepoint with two plugs. It runs at 30A. Not great, but a nice oasis in the desert.

The problem? It's at a casino.

2+ hours (I was only topping off) with "nothing else to do" at a casino can get expensive.

Every time I stop at the Silverthorne SC (next to an outlet mall), it ends up costing me money from something at one or more stores. I definitely would not be stopping at that outlet mall so often if there was no SC there. I completely agree that forward-thinking business owners should be clamoring for Tesla to build a SC nearby, especially as the Model X and III are rolled out.

I don't even have a Tesla yet and a Supercharger cost me money LOL. I stopped by the Hawthorne Supercharger, and went inside to look at the Model X. Before I knew it I had bought my wife a Tesla jacket. The good news is the receptionist packaged it in a nice Tesla bag which we use at the grocery store.

The Grants Pass SC is in the Black Bear Diner parking lot. So, I had to get the Volcano breakfast with a side order of their bacon (close to the best I've had) - easily 4 hours at the gym to work off. It all went straight to my @ss! Definitely not free.

While I understand the sarcasm in this thread, at least the money you're spending is on goods that have value and ones that you might have bought anyway at another time (clothing, food, etc.). On the flip side, gasoline just gets burnt and expelled into the atmosphere. I'd rather spend my money on food and clothing.

Driving across country I got so tired of fast food and/or chain restaurants. Love to see more superchargers near independent stores and dining options. Whole Foods would be great though!

We have made two supercharged trips up north and I have to say I would never have stopped in to eat at a Texas Steakhouse but since at least two in North Carolina have superchargers in their lot we tried them out. Turns out they have some very nice salads and good bread too. Not to mention nods to my childhood cowboy heroes :).
