LOANER BEWARE when getting Roadster repair

So while my Roadster was being serviced I was fortunate enough to get an MS loaner. While pulling out of my driveway I didn't realize the MS sat so low to the ground, and hit the black plastic piece that sits at the bottom of the bumper - putting a dent in it. Long story short the piece itself was only $260 but they had to take off the bumper in order to install the piece needing 2 1/2 hours of labor! So the cost soared from $260 to almost $800 total for that small damage  I asked the service adviser to talk with the SC manager who took off $200..... On the bright side they did a fantastic job with my Roadster  so Loaner Beware.....

Some of the service centers won't give Roadster owners a Model S as a loaner because we, uhhh, are a little rough on the cars.

I have no idea what they're talking about.

I think, Princess Tesla, that you've discovered a particular rule possibly formulated specifically for you :) I haven't had any trouble getting a Model S loaner for my two annual visits so far.

For fellow Roadster owners that haven't experienced it yet, I'll just say that the P85+ loaner was expensive for me too, though not in the way described by bart. The upgraded suspension made such a difference in the driving experience of the S, I'll have to get that option on the X now. I think my first car (which we still have and drive today, 20-something years later) cost what that suspension upgrade by itself is going to cost.

Heyyyyyy! I didn't say that they wouldn't give ME a Model S :). Just saying I'd HEARD that some service centers had that policy towards Roadster owners. But now that I think about it, I've never actually ASKED for a Model S. I always tell them 'no worries, I've got the Jeep, just come get the Roadster'. Hmmmm.

I know they read the forum. -waves @ local folks- Hey, guess what!! Yeah. Next time. :)

To your local service folks - be sure she gets the P85+ for that loaner. Maybe a P85 another time so she can see the difference in the driving experiences. Sell another expensive option package right there (this Roadster service thing could be expensive for us :))

Are roadster customers treated differently? How? What's your experience?

I love how they treat Roadster owners. They almost always come pick up my car and park it in the garage. You know that 'elf service' that Elon is talking about where it just happens and you're unaware? Pretty much how it goes for me. Even when they were 130 miles away (before Rocklin was open.) 12volt battery replaced while I was at work. Tires shipped overnight, n/c. I've never had a complaint with service. Menlo Park, Fremont, Seattle (one visit), Rocklin. All have been stellar.

And my first service experience was a result of one of the service guys (hey Jake!) reading this forum, seeing I was going to swing by the center in Menlo Park, coming in on his day off so he could take care of my car. That is how I've experienced service.

Reading about how well taken care of the Roadster owners seemed to feel was a large factor in me putting in a reservation for a Model S. And driving a Model S then quickly led me to HAVE to buy a Roadster. Don't know that I feel extra love as a Roadster owner (especially since I consider a second generation owner like myself to be very different than the original crowd from back in years past, and maybe they do too). I may feel a little extra care for being a two Tesla family, but honestly, the Tesla people I have interacted with have always made me feel special, from pre-owner, to Model S owner to two Tesla family.

Though I always feel special when I see the posted hourly service rates and know that I get to pay more per hour for the same guy to work on my Roadster as works on my Model S.

That's not going to happen. They had to borrow my Roadster for an event they had there one night, just so they could have one on display. :) Bonus for me, they brought it back detailed.

Lucky enough to have a two Tesla family. However, I get to drive the Roadster TO the service center. Tesla would pick it up from us, but the better half will only entrust my driving to bring the car to service and not the Tesla Valet. (Which is about the only time I get to drive the Roadster)

Tesla picks up and drops off my Model S, however.

I'll be a two Tesla family when the Model X comes out. Someday. It WILL happen. I know it will. yep.

I don't know about "differently" - the NJ Service Center seems to treat everyone pretty well. I have been really impressed with the last few service visits (basically the 3 year / 36K and a few subsequent visits). I did renew my Extended Service Agreement - i.e. limited coverage out to 6 years / 72K. But Last time the car went in I got to talk to one of the remaining Tesla specialists about some odd noises from the rear axle, he was great, worked hard on the car and fixed my problem.

They also sanded & painted the brake rotors (the bit around the axle, inside the brake disc) which has made a truly amazing difference to the appearance of the car; that was the only place any rust or corrosion was visible and it was RIGHT THERE in my shiny wheels. I've had people point it out to me at car shows, like I hadn't noticed it myself... So I just wanted to add my +1 to the great service we have been getting in spite of the Roadster now being a rare and unusual car.

Re the loaners... I think you must have way too many Model S's in the West Coast service centers because I've begged and even offered to pay a rental fee for a Model S loaner any time my Roadster goes in, but have never been lucky enough to get one. I've been given a rental car a few times as a courtesy but even that is exceptional. Of course it might be what Bonnie said - maybe they look at my logs and see "0-60. Stop. 0-60. Stop. 0-60. Stop."
