West Virginia coal company laying off 1.100 workers

Just to put things in perspective, the coal mining industry directly employs about 80,000 people nationwide. That's approximately 0.06% of the 132.6 million jobs in the US. According to a recent report:
the U.S. solar industry employed 142,698 Americans as of November 2013. This figure includes the addition of 23,682 solar workers over the previous year, representing 19.9 percent growth in employment since September 2012.
So even as one industry is losing jobs, another is gaining (rapidly). That's how economies have worked for centuries.

In Australia, the solar industry also employs more people than the coal industry.
