Are all Model S cars's door chrome alignments so bad?

My car's body parts alignment is actually quite good. I get a fair amount of complements about the fit at car shows because people who show cars are particular about this kind of thing, and they appear to be surprised at how good the fit is.

There was also a TSB for some of the earlier VIN's to pull the back of the large chrome piece (the triangular piece behind the rear windows) back in towards the car; I think it amounted to a bit of brute force and some glue, but either way, it did help, I used to snag my polishing rags on it all the time. The rest of mine has always aligned well, although like many of the earlier VINs, the frunk kicks up a little on one of the front corners, and the front wings are not as tight as they could be where they meet the A-Pillar.

They have definitely not fixed it. Mine is brand-new (made in June) and it looks just like the photos above. The fit and alignment of Model S body parts and trim is pretty amateur by modern standards. My 1998 Lexus GS400 is much tighter.

It's a great battery, a great motor, and a revolutionary UI. Honestly, all the rest -- the stuff that is just a car -- has a long way to go.

The chrome trim over the door, at bottom of window, may come loose from time to time. You can simply press them down to get a better fit. We remove those pieces, they slide right up, when we do full vehicle clear bra wraps.

As for triangular shape at rear window, there is a very strong adhesive that's suppose to hold it in place. If that bond is somewhat loose, you should be able to take it into SC and they will fix it. Whenever we go to SC for various reasons, we see several MS parked in the back with that issue being repaired.

Once again, the MS is a great car, but a new ground-up vehicle that will have lots of kinks to be ironed out. Great thing is, we're always seeing changes whenever we work on them weekly. They're constantly being improved as issues arise. Tesla is extremely responsive to improvements. I've seen many changes since the Signature cars we began working on from the beginning. Quality has improved.

Notice that the chrome piece that's part of the triangular shape at the rear window is one long piece stretching all the way from the front window to the back. Sometime back I recall seeing a video in which the Production Manager proudly points out that this is unique. No other manufacturer attempts to install such a long piece. Check out the other cars, all are in separate sections.

Sometimes when you are pushing the envelope, it takes a few iterations to achieve perfection.

Personally the fit on my Tesla is just fine

Exactly...I think most Tesla owners are pretty laid back and patient with these idiosyncrasies. Most know what they got into when they bought it. We're around Rolls Royce, Bentley, Porsche, Mercedes, etc. all day. Model S doesn't quite match up to them in fit and finish, but, some of the aforementioned companies have had over a century to perfect their automobiles. You should see a classic Benz or Porsche from the 60s, 70s, etc.

I'd give Tesla a few more years, and they'll be up there with the major luxury brands. But, I don't think Musk was going to market with matching or beating those manufacturers. He went to market with a product that was going to change how we transport ourselves and our family. IMHO, Tesla is offering a unique PACKAGE with the Model S. You cannot say it's the most luxurious, the most powerful, the most technologically advanced, etc. But, when you put all the pieces together, you do have the most influential automobile in several decades. It can only get better from here. Most brands are hinting at moving toward alternative fuel. Look at Hybrids from Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc. Even in motorsport, Porsche is proving how it can be done. So, the fun has just begun and I hope to see more innovations in my lifetime.

This is not just a matter of misaligned chrome parts. Check out the thumbnailed pics:

The actual doors are not aligned with other doors/metal parts. Check the horizontal line of the metal part of the door where they meet. One is above/below another.

I was at the Fremont showroom today and looked at their white floor model. The alignment between various body panels (doors, hood, fenders, bumper, rear lights, etc.) can be inconsistent and it shows that the factory still has some ways to go in terms of manufacturing tolerances in this regard. The alignment issue is highlighted more on lighter colored cars, or on darker colors where chrome trim makes this issue stand out.

Another thing I noticed (not related to body panel alignment) was where the headliner meets the weather strip on the doors. Normally the headliner tucks cleanly underneath the strip, but in some places it clearly didn't.

yeah... car wash rags getting caught in that same spot on the back window chrome trim... This has happened twice to me, and it's happening again in the lower pictures Andy1 posted.

Andy1, I think, from what I've seen, most of these require looking fairly close to notice. I know there are a couple of places things aren't perfect on my car, but I have to look really close to find them. Overall, most people don't notice.

I had the triangle trim in the rear separate on one side, SC repaired it without issue. Also had the EXACT same door trim issue as Car #1, on the same door. Every time I walked by that side of the car I'd just push it back into place and eventually it stopped sticking out like that.

I had some of the chrome alignment issues when I took delivery of the car and I pointed it out to the delivery specialist. She noted it and my service center called me to take care of it the next day. I think if the person who's car this belonged to contact service they would address it. Yes there are issues, but they have been fixed for me. I'm more worried about the bigger items at this point, like the motor and what will happen after warranty...
