PALO ALTO, Calif. — Electric car maker Tesla Motors says it will open a new power train production facility in Palo Alto, Calif., helped in part by a recent award of government loans.
The company says the facility will build components for its vehicles and other automakers. The complex will also house its corporate headquarters and will employ roughly 350 people with space for up to 650.
Electric car company Tesla Motors Inc. may be looking to lease 350,000 square feet of property once occupied by Agilent Technologies in Palo Alto, sources say.
Commercial real estate industry sources report that a deal was signed with Stanford Research Park for the building at 3500 Deer Creek Road in Palo Alto within the past 10 days. Jim Beeger, a broker with Colliers International, said Stanford Research Park had planned to tear down the structure which Tesla is moving into.

When Tesla Motors announced Aug. 18 that it plans to relocate its headquarters from San Carlos to Palo Alto later this year, several Menlo Park residents asked whether their city made a push for the electric car maker, which has a showroom in Menlo Park.
It did, said Dave Johnson, the city's business development manager, responding in an e-mail to one such query. Menlo Park tried to steer the automaker to a 22-acre site owned by General Motors, which had at one point planned to build an auto mall there, he said.
