Rumormill: Mercedes-Benz working on electric SLS eDrive for 2015

According to the gossip-happy blokes over at Autocar, the electric SLS will share its lightweight aluminum body, gullwing doors, and most of the interior with upcoming SLS. The changes for the SLS eDrive will mostly be contained in the powertrain, which will use four 98 kW motors (one at each wheel) for a total of 392 kW (532bhp) and 649 lb. ft. of torque. A rumored 0-62 mph time of under four seconds and a top speed of 120 mph would put it in the realm of the Tesla Roadster if the SLS eDrive were available today, albeit undoubtedly at a much higher price point.

2015? Might as well run on hydrogen...

Building up on the earlier announcement of http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/news...imler-builds-batteries.html?highlight=Daimler, we have news of
Daimler Previews Work on Electric Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Sportscar

Lots of interesting solutions, some discussed on TMC as suggestions for improvement of the Roadster: four-wheel drive and low-center of mass battery arrangement.

The electric drive SLS AMG uses four electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW (526 hp) and maximum torque of 880 N·m (649 lb-ft)
...
In its first pilot phase, the SLS AMG with electric drive incorporates a modular, liquid-cooled, 400V 48 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack.
...
Daimler said that Deutsche Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG (earlier post), will provide the battery technology required in future
...
Daimler said that the purely electric drive system was factored in as early as the concept phase when the new gull-wing model was being developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. The design and development phase for the SLS AMG got underway in the last quarter of 2006.

Does the highlite suggest the use of TM battery pack for eSLS AMG?

If you ask me this is one of the reasons Daimler bought into Tesla. They've got actual working solutions for the PEM, battery etc, etc. Daimler might not use the same tech but if nothing else Tesla has probably done a lot of stupid mistakes during development that Daimler would rather not want to do :) Using Teslas engineers as free consultants would easily be worth a lot to Daimler...

Mercedes-Benz to Build Electric Supercar - Auto - FOXNews.com

The 48 kilowatt-hour battery pack, to be developed in a joint venture with German battery cell manufacturer Evonik Industries, could conceivably give the car a range of up to 200 miles, though Mercedes-Benz has not yet revealed specifics. Tesla's involvement was not mentioned, though the company is known to be working with Mercedes-Benz on an electric version of its Smart Fortwo microcar.

EDIT: Here is the original press release - New swing-wing model with purely electric high-tech drive system: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with electric drive – the exciting future of the super sports car

So they've gone for two motors (one per axle) rather than hub motors.

Well, the car has 4 motors overall, which are referred to as "single wheel drive" in the picture. The motor seem to be of "inboard" variety, not the hub-kind as in Lightning GT.
The four electric motors are positioned near the wheels, substantially reducing the unsprung masses compared to wheel-hub motors. One transmission per axle transmits the power.
I'm confused by the second sentence, however. By transmission they must mean gearbox. In that case is axle a short drive-line connecting wheel via gearbox to the motor?

Today AMG confirmed their plans to make an all-electric version of the yet-to-be-revealed Mercedes SLS supercar.
High performance, all wheel drive, gull wing doors, liquid cool batteries...

The important bits of the press release:
...powerful forwards thrust is provided by four electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW and a maximum torque of 880 Nm. The four electric motors are positioned near the wheels, substantially reducing the unsprung masses compared to wheel-hub motors. One transmission per axle transmits the power. This intelligent all-wheel-drive system allows dynamically optimised power transmission without any losses by means of Torque Vectoring – in other words the specifically targeted acceleration of individual wheels. In its first pilot phase, the SLS AMG with electric drive incorporates a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery of modular design with an energy content of 48 kWh and a capacity of 40 Ah. The 400-volt battery is charged by means of targeted recuperation during braking whilst the car is being driven.
...

...the modular high-current battery, whose modules are located in front of the firewall, in the centre tunnel and behind the seats.

* Max. output - 392 kW
* Torque - 880 Nm
* 0-100 km/h - Approx. 4 s
* Rated capacity - 40 Ah (at 400 V)
* Energy content - 3x 16 kWh = 48 kWh

Strategic alliance for fast electrification of the car
The electrically powered SLS AMG sees Mercedes-Benz and AMGcontinuing to pursue their aim of minimising the amount of time it takes to bring about the electrification of the car. Their strategic involvement in Deutsche Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG, will provide the battery technology required in future...
No mention of Tesla...

Looks like it has a 10 inch touch screen. Very similar idea to the Model S.
I would say it's 17" (like the Model S). Also has an LCD virtual instrument cluster like the Models S, but more closely resembling the Fisker Karma with the frames around the dials.

Seems to be a popular idea with concept cars, but is there a vehicle with such an instrument cluster currently on the market? I wonder how people feel about it in day to day use.
