Green Car Congress: AIST team developing Li-air capacitor-battery targeted for EVs
Unfortunately doesn't mention what else it takes to become reality.When high power is needed, the capacitor cathode would play the main role of peak power output; when high energy is demanded, the air catalytic cathode would display its high energy character. The adjustability of power output and energy output demonstrate that the proposed lithium–air capacitor–battery should be a promising power system for future electric vehicles.
Buying an EV is one thing, being able to drive it beyond city limits another...

Per gram of weight, the batteries last six times longer than anything commercially available,PolyPlus faces one big technical problem: Its lithium-air battery can be recharged just 40 to 50 times, vs. thousands of times for traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Hey, they are getting there. Big blue (IBM) is also in on this one, so give it a couple of years.
Had something come across my Facebook page that's making wild claims. Maxergy by 27th Century Technologies, Inc. Perpetual self charging batteries. Hopefully Tesla has R&D people who hunt these claims down and see if any potential is there for future battery replacements.

We already have a couple of topics covering this area:
* Lithium-air batteries
* It's the Batteries, Stupid!!
Please continue the discussion there to keep it central. Thanks!
