Kinda ok Tesla car sales in Norway in Q1 2014

Tesla did kinda ok in Norway in March. Norwegians share the Brits affinity for understatement. Americans would maybe phrase it somewhat more like: Tesla sales in Norway f*** unbelievable, sales through the roof, setting new national records.

March car registrations statistics in Norway just in:
http://ofvas.no/bilsalget/

Tesla is 7th most sold car brand in Q1 2014.

Tesla is 2nd most sold car brand in March, after VW.

Model S is most sold car model of March AND of the entire first quarter.

In fact, Model S now holds the new record of most sold car model in one month.

Tesla sold more cars in March than Ford.

20.3% of all cars sold in Norway in March were battery electric EVs.

Car model sales for 1st quarter 2014:

#1: Tesla Model S: 2056
#2: VW Golf: 1577
#3: Nissan Leaf: 1559

#9: VW Up (sold both in electric and greenhouse-gas emitting versions): 927
#13: BMW i3: 646

One Norwegian newspaper writes: Don't tell the foreigners yet. They won't belive you. They'll just think it's an April fools joke.

I assure you, this is not an April Fools joke.

Video proof:

One day's worth (or so) of deliveries from Tesla's Drammen store.

Tesla's growth comes at a price though. Tesla is breaking Norwegian laws on overtime. The mad rush they do each end of quarter, in order to both produce and sell cars in same quarter, creates problems. Frankly, it must be hell for their employees to have this type of kangaroo delivery rate. Tesla fly in a lot a foreign staff.

Tesla sold TWO THOUSAND AND FIFTY SIX Model S cars in Norway in Q1 2014? That is incredible!

You Norwegians have excellent taste in automobiles. :)

My wife and I are taking our first ever trip to Norway in June for two weeks of hiking and exploring in the Lofoten Islands and the fjords near Bergen. We are looking forward to fantastic scenery and lots of Tesla sightings!

I'm guessing we'll end up somewhere in the 6000-8000 range of sales in 2014. Not bad for the ~118th most populous country in the world. :)

Consider the annual production capacity of Tesla's Fremont factory. Is it 20 000 cars per year = 5000 per quarter? That would mean 40% of the production went to Norway in Q1?

Maybe Tesla should consider a European factory in Norway? Locally produced cars, not shipped halfway around the world. Production powered by clean electricity. Could even use clean Norwegian produced aluminium. :)

This is foreshadowing what will happen in the US when a lower cost gen 3 car is available. 20% of all new cars sold were BEVs!

This is a foreshadowing of what will happen to the car industry. Battery prices are falling steadily. The green shift to electric cars will happen fast. If other car companies are not producing successful EVs now, they'll be irrelevant and out of business when that shift happens in their market.

this isn't the place for the discussion but it will be interesting to see how the increased demand for commodities used in batteries (i.e., graphite) will impact battery prices ... maybe I'll jump over to the investor's forum.

Production capacity of Fremont is 500k units. Although they are currently producing at a rate of about 30k units.

Long term, a European factory will be built inside the EU.

Norway and Switzerland get cars shipped directly from Fremont.

EU countries get their Model S partially assembled in Tilburg The Netherlands.
