Mobileye-update active cruise control now working.

There is enough information on mobile eye on the TMC which I will not repeat. The new change is that mobileye has brought out a new enhancement box (Nov 2013) to add to a standard mobileye 5 series system. This will also retrofit to an existing installation. The advantage of this enhancement box is that it provides an analog output to control a relay which can be wired to the brake pedal sensor ( brake light) this allows mobileye to disconnect the cruise control and activate the regenerative braking on the model S. The time to collision that disconnect and alerts is adjustable from 0.1 seconds to 3 seconds. I have found that 0.5 seconds works well. On a normal day my cruise control is on then as I approach a car in front and get too close the cruise kicks off automatically via mobileye, I then reengage the cruise control by pushing the cruise control stick down which reengages at the current lower speed. This is great if distracted to mitigate the chance of rear ending the car in front.
Another feature not designed into mobileye but in practice actually works on MS. For some reason when the mobile eye activate the cruise control disconnect the brakes get applied for a split second as well as the regen. In practice this also happens with the cruise control off. If I am driving with no cruise and get to close to the vehicle in front of me it will tap the brakes to alert me of a potential impact as well as alarm. It does not do this every time (just alarm every time) but is an added bonus about 50 % of the time when manually driving with no cruise control on.

Other features of mobile eye which work well
lane departure warning
collision monitoring and alert as well as cruise control disconnect and regen as well as alert and occasional brake application without cruise
speed limit sign reading and display of over speed limit amount in 5 mile increments (adjustable to display at over speed limit, 10mph over etc
rolling forward bumper alert when stopped behind a car at a light, if you start to roll it will alert you before hitting car in front.
pedestrian and motorcycle/bicycle warning for possible collision.
Also connects to your iphone for adjustment and speed sign display although the actual display coming with the mobileye will display mph over current speed limit.
The price or mobileye 560 including installation with the e box as $1450 without the ebox $1100 (florida prices)

I had the Mobileye enhancement box added last week and I noticed the behavior you described above. I found it a bit disconcerting, because the car will also give me the "Both Pedals Pressed" error message when an alarm is triggered while I'm pressing on the accelerator. But I can live with that, because the total Mobileye package has really helped improve my driving and the peace of mind that it's looking out for me, has really been nice.

Yes the both pedals message does appear and at first I had mixed feeling especially if I was accelerating at the time and got too close to the car in front as I overtook which resulted in a momentary brake tap and acceleration at the same time. However having driven with it for a week now. I find a 0.5 second selection for the warning and disconnect works well for freeway driving and 0.7 seconds for everyday driving avoids most alerts and the system works more as a collision avoidance device when I get to close rather than an inconvenience during normal driving. I think the brake tap is a bonus when cruise control is off as an attention getter. The solution to this double pedal message would be to connect directly to the cruise control stalk wiring and not use the brake pedal switch. However I think I would miss this new found feature of the MS if I was to rewire the current configuration. Wiring directly to the cruise control stick switches would also allow the enhancement box to send repeated slow down commands rather than just a disconnect signal to the cruise control this could be set up with a repeating alert every 1 second if the distance did not increase with the car infront. With a full disconnect happening at 0.2 second collision warning. Just food for thought.

CORRECTION.. On further discussion it appears that with the cruise control off and in the event of a near collision the original statement .......’For some reason ..the brakes get applied for a split second' is incorrect although in practice this is what it feels like but is more likely a regen function rather than a brake function.
When this happens with the cruise control off it feels like a quick brake tap but is probably the regen kicking in for a split second at higher speeds and accelerations this momentary regen with the cruise control off feels like a brake tap but is probably not the brakes at all but the regen. The end effect is still the same it gets your attention if you don't pay attention to the audio alert.

Tesla really need to co work with mobileeye, a certified retrofit would be optimal. Allowing a fully integrated aac and collision awoidance system. Truely hope this wil be posible some day. If not I will seatle with the aftermarket mobileeye integration.

Can you provide more information on this as an add on to a 560 system. I could find nothing on it on the mobileye website. Where did you get the add on?

There is a PDF file with some information at http://www.mobileye.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Enhancement-Box_Release_Oct-2013.pdf

I had my add on installed by the same people that installed my 560 system (The Specialists - Car Audio, Security, Mobile Video, Auto Tinting, Window Films, Stereo Repair - Tucson, Arizona)

+1 having Mobilleye as an option on MS will make a great car even greater.
BTW: does anybody know of a certified installer in Northern Virginia?

If Tesla doesn't provide direct support for Mobileye, hopefully they'll provide enough SDK support so that 3rd parties can add apps to the new Tesla App Store to integrate 3rd party products like this into the car's user interface.

Mobileye - Our Vision. Your Safety.
Is the US website. Click at the bottom under dealers to find an approved Mobileye installer. Normally the installer will call mobileye head office to obtain the correct information for mounting and wiring. I would suggest the camera is installed in the middle of the windshield (top of windshield middle ) directly underneath the mirror mount. The small round Mobileye display fits just above the center mirror between the ceiling and the mirror close to flat with the mirrors surface. The on off and volume controls are a squeeze to get to in this setup but can be reached. The volume can be set from an iphone using the mobileye app. On off is automatic with the MS power yellow wire purple stripe beside left leg on wall of drivers side 3 inches from floor easy to access. Also good for radar detectors and blind spot power supply. So no real use for the volume and on/off on top of display unit and a much more ppleasing location for the look of the MS to have it above the mirror balanced in the middle of the car.

Mobile Eye is competing with continetal and Bosch for Tesla's contract for Model X and beyond (I.e., smart cameras integrated in the car). This is part of what Elon Musk was referring to in Oslo regarding the autonomous car.

Yes, that's how I have mine setup also:

I've had the MobilEye installed in my Model S for a little less than a year now. So far, I'm a bit underwhelmed. I've even spoken to MobilEye directly about some of the issues. If you "drive like Ms. Daisy" on open roads the system works well. If you drive in a congested city like Los Angeles and drive somewhat more aggressively than grandma, the system if far too sensitive and becomes like the "boy who cried wolf". I've had to turn off the lane departure warning since it would constantly go off while driving over canyon roads or entering or exiting the freeway. I've set the pre-collision warning to its lowest setting (.4 seconds) and it still goes off far too often.

MobilEye was originally created for fleet trucks and cars and hasn't really been adapted to street cars. They really need to adjust the programming and offer several settings for "standard" and "performance" options. You also cannot adjust the volume of the pre-collision warning and I find it startles my passengers way to often. Until MobilEye really adjusts the system I don't really think it is ready for prime-time in a performance car like the Model S.

They do want me to take it back to my installer (Al & Ed's in West Hollywood) and have it recalibrated but I doubt that will make much of a difference.

@Drcomputer
i understand why you are underwhelmed, It sounds like your system was not set up properly during the intial installation. My mobileye intially was set to a minimum of 1.0 seconds for the first warning and 0.2 second for the final alarm to indicate an imminent collision. But working with my installer and telling him what I wanted, he was able to allow me to adjust the first alert (chime and cruise control off) from 0.1 second to whatever I wanted via my iphone. It sounds like your installer has set your minimum limit to 0.4 second it is a simple fix to program the software to allow you access to the full range 0.1 to 2.0 seconds. Secondly I can adjust the alert volume via my iphone and also the buttons on the mobileye display your range should be from 0 to 5. It sounds like your installer has defaulted to 5 all the time. The actual collision alert (repetitive chime) is factory set to 0.2 and can not be changed. Make sure that your cruise control is set to turn off at both warnings as mobileye prioritizes alert and if you are coming up on a slow vehicle from behind very fast it will bypass the 1 chime alert and go straight into the repetitive collision alert. Intially i had my cruise control turn off at the 1 chime alert and then when testing I realized that at a high speed and a high time closure rate the cruise control was staying on due to no 1 chime alert just the final collision alert sounding, a quick software toggle on the installers computer fixed that problem. Now my cruise control disconnnects everytime no matter what the situation.
Finally I think you really need to have your mobileye recalibrated as I have found I only get alerts when I drive in a way I feel uncomfortable with. I use a 0.5 second setting for freeway speeds and either 0.5 or 0.7 second for around town with no alerts during normal driving. To activate the factory set alert 0.2 second prior to impact. I have to drive with my foot over the brake pedal I have to be really close (read scarry) to the car infront for that alert to be activated. My installer was holding on for grim life when we where testing it. So your constant 0.4 second granny mode must be way out of allignment and sounds like it was not calibrated correctly at install. i find 0.4 seconds on my mobileye to be really scarry being that close behind someone, you must have a special granny :) or an incorrectly calibrated mobileye or maybe you work part time as a stunt driver in Holywood and 0.4 seconds is normal at work, but I am betting on a wrongly calibrated camera. Just as a reference or benchmark to demonstrate my system I adjust my alert and disconnect of cruise control to 1.0 second so as not to have the person in the car in front freak out that I am riding their tail. I did freak a few drivers out in the name of science when testing the intial install with the installer in my car. I don't normally drive like that but we had to get close to set off the final alert to see if it worked.
Oh I forgot about your lane departure warning that too has an adjustment from High to Low sensitivity via your iphone ( if your installer selected that option during programming to allow you to change it.) I intially had mine set to low which alerts once you have crossed the line, that was a bit late for me so I changed it to high and it alerts now as I hit the line, that is the way my wifes infinity alerts with the factory version of lane departure in the infinity. Again I suspect your calibration is off if it alerts before you actual hit the line. As for merging lanes coming onto a freeway I cant remeber getting that alert, but either way once you get your volume down to 1 I think you will not mind the occassional lane merge warning.
Al and Eds normally do a good install, it sounds like for some reason this one did not calibrate the way it should. I have been very happy with my mobileye, this was the installers first Tesla and his 3rd only mobileye install. We spent 2 full days getting it right and now he is an expert on mobileye and on tesla installs. I did read the installers manual from cover to cover to find out what could be done. I would really like to incorporate the electic parking brake switch at the end of the drive reverse stalk on thr MS into my final alert that would be my ultimate goal , if I could have regen braking at 0.5 seconds and add emergency electric braking at 0.2 seconds that would be fantastic. A electric diagram of the steering column from Tesla would be great showing the wiring for the cruise control. If anyone has access please let me know.

One further thought. New firmware for the mobileye came out around Aug 13 possible an older unit with older firmware may have had different algorithms to trigger alerts. Certainly I am very happy with the results from my unit. I did check with mobileye during my installation that I had the latest firmware installed as this is required to have the over speed limit amount displayed in the mobileye display unit. As of last week (end of jan 2014) firmware version 2.10v1.11i is the latest firmware. To display your current firmware version it can be found on the mobile app for mobileye on the iphone by selecting mobileye application information from within the app.

I am actually taking the car in on Thursday to have Al & Ed's do the recalibration of the unit. Unfortnately the MobilEye app for Android is now broken since my phone was updated to Android 4.3. MobileEye admits it's a problem with their app but they haven't released a new one yet so I can no longer make any settings changes via the app.

I am a Mobileye installer in Atlanta area & just finished a Model S with a Mobileye 5 system. I also did a cruise defeat but went at it another way & do not get error message (both pedals pushed) the only difference is that my way disconnects the cruise & it must be turned back on I have it connected through E-box & Headway monitoring so that you can control the timing. works great & will be glad to do more. I'm Installer with over 35 years experience. I just finished a Model S with Mobileye 5 system & used E-box for cruise control disconnect.works great & the way i have done this, it does not give you the error message (both pedals pushed) welcome any questions. we have also just finished an Escort 9500ci on another Model S Please contact Sound Sensations Marietta Ga 770-429-1600

@cartune00 good to know there is another way to disconnect the cruise without the 2 pedal warning, when you state that your way turns off the cruise completely, can you clarify if you are turning the whole system off (yellow light and power to cruise and cruise memory) or just disconnecting the cruise in the normal manner where an up push on the stalk will re-engage at the last set speed or a down push on the stalk will re-engage at the current slower speed after disconnection. If you got into the steering column wiring did you consider using the electric emergency brake for the final warning prior to collision 0.2 second alarm in addition to the cruise disconnect at the first alert ?
