I don't think the 17" touch screen is an option. It's supposed to be standard on all the Model S cars from what I gathered at least.

Well, with how things have traditionally been with Tesla, I wouldn't be too sure if anything will be standard or even will exist on the car at this point. However a 17 inch touchscreen shouldn't be TOO expensive since you can buy a 22 inch all-in-one touchscreen PC for $1000 today.
Because there are tons of crazy people in this world...

Tesla Considers Software Application To Re-Skin Interior of Model S - All Cars Electric

According to design chief Franz von Holzhausen, "We're investigating an online application-type store where you can go and re-skin the interior of your car while you're sitting in traffic."

He adds, "You can continually refresh the image and the feel and vibe of your car. Your wife can have a different look and feel for the interior than you, as a driver. Your kids can have the Hello Kitty version, if they want."
    ...

According to von Holzhausen, "The screen frees us up to continue to grow and expand the interior feel and user interface, through software. This would enable Tesla to skip retooling costs associated with conventional models changeovers by integrating virtual upgrades."

He adds, "Everybody, rather than keeping up with the Joneses, wants to be the Joneses and be the trend-setter and wants to go their own way. We're allowing that flexibility."

I stopped in the NY store today and had a very nice conversation with the Tesla rep there. First, there were no working Roadsters there because they sold all the demos (that's a good sign!). They expect to get more in once the store is fully built.

More importantly, she was trying (very nicely) to upsell me to a Signature model from the regular S, and said that the Signature will have special electronics and controls that will not be available at all on non-Sig Model S's. I didn't recall seeing this previously. Does anyone have any information or thoughts about what this special Sig-only electronics or control panel might involve?

They keep saying things like that but it would be nice to have some official idea of what the Signature upgrade includes. Hopefully by next summer, they should at least have the options and pricing mapped out but who knows.

I hope you don't mind me asking but how come you're not interested in a Signature S vs. the regular one? Too soon in the production line, significantly higher cost, payment schedule, etc...?

On the flip side, are there any benefits to owning a signature model with the exception of unique interior / exterior styling queues, exclusivity, future desirability / collectibllity?

I might very well be interested in a Sig Series, but I have no idea what the options are going to be, or how much it's going to ultimately cost. Until today, I hadn't heard that there was going to be something the Sig Series had that you couldn't get as an upgrade on the regular S, so I figured I didn't need to get the S because I could just order any upgrades on a regular S, and I can wait to get the 1096th S delivered in the US.

I figure there's still plenty of time. If/when they finally announce what the Sig Series has, and what the price is, I can upgrade my order then. There are probably not more than a couple hundred Sig Series ordered in the US, so there's plenty of time to upgrade if it turns out that the Sig Series has stuff so cool that I feel like I have to have it instead of the regular S, even if it's fully loaded.

I was told when I ordered that the Signature Series would have a collection of options and interior that can't be replicated with a regular production Model S (even if you fully loaded it). What those options are they couldn't tell me. Oh well. Still can't wait to get it.

The two things she mentioned were unique colors and the special electronics/panel, but wouldn't get more specific than that. I don't care about color so much, so it's really only the electronics that might entice me to upgrade to the Sig Series, but I'd really want to know what they meant.

I imagine Sig Series cars would also probably do better on the used car market because they'll be relatively rarer.

Not sure. Maybe better speakers and such? Can't imagine the touch screen would eb any different since that's a main selling point of car. I imagine it'll be interior, badging and other small things. I mainly got Signature Series to get it sooner.

I have a feeling we're a good year off from when we'll know more details (but I'm guessing of course). When I called Tesla, they did say probably 3-6 months before production is when I'd know for sure about exactly what options I could get.
