Latest firmware version for a 1.5 Roadster

The VMSparser and a dump of your logs will show all the firmware revisions.

Reviving this old thread. I have owned my 1.5 for 5 weeks, it has about 13K miles on it. Trying to figure out what firmware version it has. I ran a vms_log file I downloaded today through vms_parser and do not see where the firmware version is shown in the Transient Log Summary data table. Here is what I see:

Barrys-Air-2:~ barrybrisco$ /Applications/VMSParser /Volumes/DISK_IMG/VehicleLogs/5YJRE11B781000425/201411102000/vms_log
Analyze: /Volumes/DISK_IMG/VehicleLogs/5YJRE11B781000425/201411102000/vms_log

V1.5 Roadster VIN 5YJRE11B781000425

Transient Log Summary

(then a long table of driving and charging data and then this at the end of the table)

11/10/2014 07:43:58 - 11/10/2014 09:06:31 (01:22:33) Charge 84% -> 93% 239V 56A of 56A 8.0 kWh 14.4 Ah 0.1 Ah

/Volumes/DISK_IMG/VehicleLogs/5YJRE11B781000425/201411102000/vms_log Transient section: odometer: 11525.0 to 13006.0 (1481.0 mi), 52.8 hours of driving, 304.5 hours of charging, over 221.9 days

Approximate CAC: 143.40 Ah as of 11/10/2014 09:07:08

-----------------------------------------------------------------

About an hour before downloading that log file, the car completed a range charge (I've only done a range charge three times). The charge stopped on its own (I did not stop it) with the Ideal Miles shown as 214 and the Rated Miles show as 170. That is the most miles I have been able to get it to display after a range charge since I got it. I've range charged it about three times. After a Standard Charge it typically shows 171 Ideal Miles. Before purchasing the car from a BMW dealer in Florida, Nigel Mould had them range charge the car and it charged to 241 Ideal Miles.

So I'm puzzled as to how to find the firmware version, and concerned that I can't get the car to range charge to a higher mileage figure. Over the past month I've driven the car almost one thousand miles, always plug it in to my HPC (240V / 70A) every night and have standard charged it many time. When I first got the car, for a week before my electrician hooked up the HPC, I was charging it 24/7 on the SMC (don't have a UMC) and the charge rate was so slow that I could never get it to fully range charge.

Look for a "firmware.rc" file in your logs. Open it with notepad and you should see the firmware version. Mine's at 3.6.12, which I believe is the most current.

Based on your CAC of 143, your ideal miles in both range and standard charge look normal. My CAC is 148, and my car charges up to 176 in standard and 225 in range mode.

I do recommend you look into the OVMS system and use it's COOLDOWN feature. I believe that has been instrumental in maintaining my battery health. My CAC dropped 1.5 points after I did three range charges, but consistent use of the COOLDOWN function recovered most, if not all, of that drop.

Oh, and one more thing; don't let the car sit for too long after a range charge. You mention that it sat for an hour afterwards. It's not the range charge that can damage cells, but the prolonged high-charge state.

Actually 3.6.7 15 is the latest for the 1.5, as the 80amp charger bug fix. Also someone in another thread indicated that the firmware is displayed on the VDS screen right when you turn the key on.

As for the concern over the 143CAC, it could be you pack really needs to balance. Also you should read up on how to re-calibrate the CAC. The one key turn drive the pack down to at least 30% or below. I believe your orange Roadster had been sitting for some time and who knows what state of charge it was kept in.

Thanks Supersnoop and wiztecy. I opened the firmware.rc file in TextEdit on my Mac (I did not realize that file was a text file) and it shows:

fileFormatVersion : 0.4 :
release : vehicle-firmware-3.6.12.12 : 3.6.12 : 3.6.12/BW R4 - SOP VMS - SOP SWP - 1.6 PEM - SOP BMB - PRND IP - 1.5 PM - 0.30 CPLD : 12 :

So I assume that means my firmware is 3.6.12, which is not the latest version apparently. I need the latest because I want the 80A charger fix. I am going to buy one of HCSharp's upcoming "CAN JR" (EDIT: I meant "CAN SR."). I don't need it for my daily charging since I have a Roadster HPC, but I want to have the capability to use a Model S HPWC on the road and at home as a backup if my HPC ever fails (since I don't have a Roadster UMC).

I'm pretty sure 3.6.12 is newer than 3.6.7. Here's the report from my 1.5.
timestamp, firmware version
04/09/2009 16:07:32, 3.0.15 8
04/09/2009 20:56:35, 3.2.16 12
06/30/2009 13:59:22, 3.3.1 12
10/21/2009 11:22:09, 3.4.13 17
10/21/2009 11:26:40, 3.4.13 12
05/06/2010 17:57:55, 3.4.17 12
01/21/2011 16:27:29, 3.5.18 12
08/14/2012 14:18:19, 3.6.7 12
03/04/2014 18:12:41, 3.6.12 12

Mine just came back from servicing and I specifically asked about the firmware. They said 3.6.7 was the latest. I now just need to get one of HCSharp's adapters so I can test. If I can charge at 70 amps from an 80 amp station then I am a happy camper. But if I can't they will hear from me and I will not be happy.

EDIT

The service managed called to let me know you guys are right the latest firmware is 3.6.12. So a Ranger just stopped by on his way visiting family and updated my car. You really need to hand it to Tesla for making things right.

Just so you're not set up for disappointment.. the new firmware won't let you charge at 80A, it'll let you charge at 70A from an 80A pilot.

@ecarfan, the two CANs are:

JR CAN - J1772 to Roadster adapter
SR CAN - Model S to Roadster adapter

Highly recommend both!

@djp, thanks for correcting me, I edited my post. I meant "CAN SR." I don't need the CAN JR as I already have the Tesla J1772 adaptor for the Roadster, it came to me with my Roadster.

I think that 3.6.7 12 may be the latest firmware. I'm going to be charging at the San Rafael Service Center tomorrow. I will ask.

Supersnoop has it correct. 3.6.12 is the last flash of the firmware, I was one of the first 1.5 Roadster owners to get it and you can see my timestamp of the flash:

12/10/2013 08:52:04, 3.6.12 12

SuperSnoop had his flashed later, but you can see how old his 3.6.7 firmware was, 2012 vintage and in '14 firmware 3.6.12 was flashed:

08/14/2012 14:18:19, 3.6.7 12
03/04/2014 18:12:41, 3.6.12 12

Thanks for the correction! That indeed is correct what you mentioned, sorry about confusing you all! Here's my latest firmware output taken from my last stick dump:

12/10/2013 08:52:04, 3.6.12 12
I should note that I've never been able to get into the service menu on my car. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong, or if they disabled/changed the procedure to pull up the service menu in the latest firmware.

BUMP;
Anyone know what the latest firmware is for the 1.5 NOW, up to date?

Also, at what firmware (and higher) does the CAN SR work with 80A chargers?

The first 1.5 firmware version that worked with an 80A pilot signal was 3.6.12 which was released in fall of 2013. I don't know if they've come out with a newer version since then but I'm pretty sure they have not.
