Start of commercialisation of lithium sulphur batteries

steven visco, the CEO of polyplus said at a recent conference hosted by Argonne Ntl Labs that he expects to commercialize these lithium metal/flexible poly-ceramic separator/aqueous electrolyte/sulfur cathode in 4 years. i am not convinced but i am a fan of the sulfur cathode.

sion power is another company mainly funded by BASF who is trying to develop lithium/sulfur

Yes, but battery manufacturers report their energy density with 100-0% discharge even though you can't treat Li-ion battery like that if you want it to last. According to Oxis you can use lithium sulfur battery like that. So if we have Li-ion and Li-sulphur batteries with same reported capacity, li-sulphurs real life capacity is larger. Assuming Oxis's claims are true.

They list Li-Ion at 150Wh/kg. Today mass produced LiIon cells already hit ~250Wh/kg.
When technology moves out of labs into factories Wh/kg only drops because of casing, terminals, fuses, ...
Their announcment of "just under 300Wh/kg" is therefore "nothing really special" beside that they are making progress.

Over the years we have read many posts regarding promising technologies - but the progress is slow and most never make it past the labs.

“My top advice really for anyone who says they’ve got some breakthrough battery technology is please send us a sample cell, okay. Don’t send us PowerPoint, okay, just send us one cell that works with all appropriate caveats, that would be great. That sorts out the nonsense and the claims that aren’t actually true.”
