TESLA MOMENT #1051 (i'm estimating): DUI CHECK POINT:
Out last night, coming back from the Frogtown Art Walk and there is a DUI checkpoint on Alvarado. Todd rolls in, no worries. The officer begins asking his questions:
Q: Have you ever been arrested for a DUI? A: "No"
Q: Have you had anything to drink tonight? A: "No" (true)
Q: That's quite a large GPS screen. A: "Yes it is. And look, you can zoom in."
Paige in the passenger seat adds: "You can even search the web!"
Cut to another officer walking over: "Is that a Tesla? Beautiful"
Meanwhile, the line of cars behind us is building, waiting for their DUI check, curious i am sure about what is happening with the people in the car in front of them.
Cut to more officers walking over, looking.
Q: "But there's a transmission, right?" A: "No. 100% Electric"
Paige in the passenger seat: "WE LOVE IT!"
Cut to more officers walking over..
Q: "What about the sunroof"
Cut to a demo
Meanwhile, cut to the right, several very unhappy people sitting on a bench in handcuffs.

Love it.
Pulled over last week, the officer noted he had to give me a citation as I was 30 miles over the speed limit. He took my registration and then returned, and kindly forewent giving me a citation, noting I had not had a ticket "in some time", and that I had "such a beautiful car, with that big iPad". He encouraged my bewildered son to be sure to drive when he is old enough.

I've had many approach and ask. I must say, the two days that i had a white loaner, mine is grey, i had twice as many people. Even people who had seen me in the grey car, approached me only when they saw the white car.

One of the best moments was today when an 11 year old approached me and said, "is that a Tesla Model S, i wrote a paper about it at school". I gave him all the time he wanted to check the car out.

When i first got the car, i took it to an elementary school, we were planning to get a kid out of class to see the car. The teacher suggested that the whole class see the car. We ended up with two classrooms of 9 year olds checking the car out.

Just got back from Gurne Mills Mall in Illinois (MASSIVE MALL). Parked in front of Bass Pro Shop about 30 ft from the door.... Got their at 1pm, did not get to go into the store until 2:15pm. Endless hordes of people asking questions. Finally I said I'm sorry, cant answer any more questions. My 3 and 5 year olds were getting....Annoyed...... So I handed out business cards and told them to call me with questions =]

I'm still one of the people that ogle other people's Model S (mine will be here in a couple of weeks). Today at my son's soccer game, there was a nice MC Red one and of course I had to go over and check it out. While I was standing there, I saw two people stop in their tracks and stare. One of them caught my eye and I said "yeah, I'm looking at it too!". The man asked me "what is it? It sure is beautiful". I told him "it's fully electric. No exhaust pipes!". They both looked under the car and shook their heads. "Amazing!" they said. :D

Day we took delivery back in March, stopped at market for something and couple boys on their bikes came over and asked "is that a Tesla?" (why yes it is) ..."WOW, that's the future!!!". My husband was stunned they knew what the car was. He still talks about it. Driving to work one morning a fairly young boy was in car with his dad and at a stoplight he hung about half way out the car window with the biggest beautiful smile on his face and two big thumbs up and asked "what kind of car is that?" while his dad was chuckling at him. Sadly I will say few adults pay attention to the car other than I see an occasional picture being taken when glancing at rear view mirror at stoplights. Most of them are just oblivious driving like typical jerks while I try to avoid them and their annoying chaos. Maybe there is SOME hope if some of the kids are making a connection.

Damn!! I'm still waiting for my Tesla moment. I get mostly blank stares or perfunctory questions without any intent to learn or know. The few intelligent questions I have received and answered were very cerebral and devoid of the excitement that you guys have been documenting. And to think that I have the only Tesla in the whole county (at least I haven't seen another hereabouts). :crying:

OH!!! and...I forgot about this one until my husband reminded me (when I was mentioning haven't had so many "moments"). Few months back, drove Tesla over to Toyota service to pick up Prius Plug-in. Dropped husband off to get car and proceeded through the service driveway...hearing "oh...would you look at that...look at those lines...oh...oooo". Later my husband told me it's all they could talk about while he was picking up the Prius, asking him tons of questions. One of them came running out of the office area "Oh!...I missed it???" and most of the service techs talking about how secretive it is when any of the new RAV's get hooked up for diagnostics and how curious they are...and how they want to go work for Tesla. :)

the kids reactions are really the best. I took my daughter to an orthodontist appointment recently and when we were on our way back out to the car, there was a mom in a mini-van parked next to us, with a couple of kids. they were all looking it over, and when i got closer and the door handles triggered, we got a nice "oooh" :)

The mom said "my 11 year old loves your car!" It's always the kids that seem to know what it is - the mom clearly had no idea, but he knew exactly what it was. So much fun showing it off for them.

People don't give me a second glance on the SF Peninsula...

But last Friday night I went into the city to go to dinner with a friend visiting from out of town. As I was parked on Union Square waiting, I was getting a LOT of attention from out of town tourists both from the US and abroad. Tesla should add a "roving showroom" driving around tourist destinations and hotels.

I am amazed how many kids recognize the car--I think I get more head turns and finger points from kids than adults.

I picked up a Mercedes GL350 last week (long story) and the sales guy and I went for a test drive in my Model S while they were finishing up the detailing and paperwork.

We get back to the lot and he shouts out to his Sales Manager "I'm buying a Tesla!". The sales manager had previously commented about the nice the fit and form of the body panels.

Here in Henderson (a suburb 5-10 mins from the Las Vegas strip), I don't get much action maybe a photo or a question here and there, but when I go to the strip, I get tourists taking pictures, valets asking questions, everyone is super nice.

Fashion Show Mall or one of the casinos would be the perfect place for a store. What are they waiting for?
