The current iteration of the software for the Model S has some really serious problems when going to the drive-in.
I've reported them. I would appreciate it if anyone else who wants to take the car to the drive-in would report them too.... since I told Tesla about the importance of having the car work right at a drive-in back in roughly January of 2012, *and they didn't listen*, the more complaints they get, the more likely they are to actually fix this stuff. And it's EASY to fix.
While sitting in PARK with the radio on, if you open the driver's side door, to go to the concessions stand, two things happen:
(1) the headlights come on (and everyone else at the drive-in swears at you) -- even if the headlights are set to "OFF"; (2) the volume on the radio goes down (and everyone in your car swears at you because they can't hear the movie).
Both of these have to stop. This is the software being too clever for its own good. If I tell the car to set the volume at a certain level, opening the door should not change that. (Unless, you know, I turn on a special option to tell it to do that.) If I tell it to turn the headlights off, they should stay off. Do what I tell you to, dammit! The software needs to just do NOTHING when I open the door, and that would solve the problem.
This is part of a general trend (not limited to Tesla) which is bad. Another example is the "auto wipers", which simply don't work, and simply waste space on the controls, so I have to switch three notches to get from "wipers on" to "wipers off". Computers are no good at figuring out what I want to do. They are very good at doing what I tell them to. So don't try to "automagically" predict what I want: let me tell you want I want, then do it!
