Plan B? Charging between Barstow and Las Vegas

I'm about to embark on a roadtrip next week in my 60kWh Model S and full family of 5.

My wife is very concerned about making it from Barstow to Vegas.

Can anyone tell me about potential places to charge between these two points if it looks like I'm not going to make it with a full range charge from the Barstow Supercharger?

I've tried searching for RV parks between these two points but I can't find any. Don't know if I'm just using the wrong resources.

Thanks in advance!

The RVParking.com iOS app shows a Primm Valley Resort and Casino on I-15 at the Nevada border. Ask if they have 50-Amp service.

Also, maybe someone in Baker could provide a 240v outlet of some sort. I suggest eating at The Mad Greek.

As far as I can tell from looking online, the RV park is closed at Primm Valley.

I tried calling the Casino but they said they have no electrical vehicle parking or RV hookups. They have a "truck stop" but no electricity to plug into there.

Looks to me that there's an opportunity to make some $$ by installing some charging stations at the outlet mall in Primm. They could charge for electricity and have a captive audience shopping there for an hour or two.

I guess that I'll have three or four long legs (Bay Area to LA via San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara) of travel ahead of my Barstow/Vegas trek to see how rated actually compares to actual miles consumed while road tripping. If it looks dicey. I can park the Tesla in LA and rent an ICE for a few days (UGH!)

At least this is a good time of year, in terms of weather. I think you'll be able to make it. Just resist the urge to drive fast. My trip will be in the middle of summer, so I have to factor in air conditioning.

I'm pretty certain that I'll make it. I'd just feel better with either a backup plan or hearing more about other people's experiences in a 60kWh model on this leg.

I'm going to keep it 55-60mph and track the rated range carefully.

I've been modeling my trip, including the weight of my passengers and luggage with this site: http://www.jurassictest.ch/GR/

at 55mph, I'm supposed to get there with 22% of my battery remaining. at 65mph, only 12% remains.

As you get more experience with the car, I think you will get much more confident with its estimates.

Nipton, NV, is 30 miles off the I-15, but then you can continue along the 95.
I know that its not a great "emergency" stop, but figured I'd pass it along

I read on an RV blog the following:
"No hookups at Primm, it looks like former RV park is now employee park. But they do appear to allow overnight dry parking in the lot behind Buffalo Bills."

If you want to simply go to Baker, CA which is 60 miles down the I-15 closer to Las Vegas and then top off there you can find (unverified) 2 RV parks with 14-50s
1) Paradise Mobile Home Park
2) Clark's Mobile Home Park

Hope that helps :scared:

I think I found out what I needed.

From Facebook:
I just did the trip yesterday (3/22/13) . I have an 85kWh that I wasn't able to charge all the way (Venetian chargers full with 2 other Model S). I stopped in Baker and pulled into a little Mobile Home place that had 4 trailer hookups in front. The place was right behind The Mad Greek on hwy 127. The guy let me charge for nothing. I was going to slip him $10, but he went out to fix something before I was able to.

Subsequently, in the thread, he confirmed it was a NEMA 14-50 and charged at 40 amps.

Nice. Thanks. I also have a 60kwh and had same concerns. I think the energy required coming back from Vegas is more than going to Vegas. See pic below. Also, there is an RV park just east of barstow (in yermo) with 50a service. That's where I plan on stopping if I run short comin back from LV.

I just got back from Vegas in my 60 kWh MS. I wouldn't worry even a pinky finger over it. I had 3 adults and 2 kids, plus lots of luggage, and made it just fine.

We max charged in Barstow, and drive about 67 mph to Vegas. AC was on, but we had it in range mode. Got there with 23 miles to spare. As I've learned from the experts on this forum, if you need to stretch your range, it's easy to do. Just slow down a bit. Note: the main mountain climb to 4500 ft right before state line will give you a scare looking at the range. But fear not, you gain most of it back on the down hill.

Ok, I range charged when I left Vegas, and drove 70-73 mph back to Barstow. Got to Barstow with 14 miles left. But I flew like 75 the last 20 miles or so. You get to know your car and its range like an old friend. Have no fear driving to Vegas in the 60, she'll treat you right.

dig up this thread, just had to laugh.
sorry, but 67mph is a rolling chicane. probably blocking all the semi.

75 was flying ? lol......

BTW, there are public (chargepoint stations) at Whiskey Pete's,

I used them recently when I was silly enough not to get a full charge at Barstow.

Will only leave with 250+miles at Barstow (on way to vegas) from now on.
