Renault's future | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

In a shock revelation to Auto Express in Geneva, top brass at the French firm has revealed more than one battery-powered model will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

And that’s not all, they also confirmed we’d have the chance to drive them before the year’s out.

In an interview with Renault design chief Patrick Le Quément, he revealed that the first electric car will be based on a soon to be launched petrol-powered car – likely to be the facelifted Clio – whereas the other models will be designed from scratch, specifically to run on batteries.

The Nissan developed system is expected to debut in 2010 in an Infiniti model and the company is now showing a prototype publicly for the first time. The new system is a single motor configuration with two clutches that allow the vehicle to be powered by either the engine, the electric motor or both.

Oh for goodness sake! Who wants to pay for two replacement clutches? One is bad enough.

Nissan may get electric car cash for UK

Nissan could receive a government grant to build electric cars at its Sunderland base following an agreement announced today.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is visiting the Sunderland plant today to oversee the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Nissan and the regional development agency, One North East, as well as see the Qazana, which will be built at the plant.

Autocar - Nissan 'should make batteries in UK'

Business secretary Lord Mandelson has told Nissan it should start making batteries in the north east to complement the planned introduction of electric car manufacturing in the region.

Speaking today during a visit to Nissan’s Sunderland plant Lord Mandelson said: “It is important to make sure the planning and investment is put in place to take advantage of a future upturn.

REPORT: Renault's reinvigorated Gordini line to go electric?

According to a report on What Car?, the fourth Gordini model will be an electric hot hatch about the size of the Clio. This electric supermini will seat up to 5 occupants and is currently slated for production in 2012, at which time it will be joined by at least three more EVs from Renault and its corporate partner, Nissan.

Pricing for the Clio-sized EV is expected to begin where the current model leaves off at around £14,000, and the batteries will be leased for around the same price per month as diesel fuel. Renault also reportedly has plans to launch charging stations where drivers can have their battery packs pulled and exchanged for fresh units, just like at a gas station. Alternatively, the cars will sport a plug to enable charging any standard wall outlet.
