Charging in Las Vegas

I have read several posts about problems charging at Las Vegas Strip locations, either due to overuse, difficulty in finding the chargers or other issues. An alternative is to charge in downtown Las Vegas at the County building, 500 South Grand Central Parkway. There are 6 free ChargePoint chargers, just to the south of the large brick office building. The ChargePoint website map has the correct location. I tried it today. There was nobody there, and the charger was running at the typical 30A, 18 mph rate. Not fast, but no worse than what's currently available elsewhere. There's lots to do downtown, and it's a nice change of pace from the Strip. Amenities include:

  • Las Vegas Premium Outlets, just across the street to the west.
  • Downtown casinos, about a 10-15 minute walk, or bus service to Fremont Street from Grand Central Pkwy.
  • Lunch or dinner at Triple George (N. Third Street) or Le Thai (Fremont east of LV Blvd.).
  • The Mob Museum, at the end of N. Third Street.
  • Buffet at Main Street Station or Golden Nugget.
  • Lots of other buffets and restaurants, mostly in the downtown casinos.
  • Zip line under the Fremont canopy.
  • The Fremont St. Experience light show.
  • A real concert, play or musical at the Performing Arts Center, not a shortened Strip version. Within walking distance to the north.
  • Fewer rolling shootouts than on the Strip.
  • If you happened to be arrested on your vacation, park before being booked into the downtown Clark County Detention Center! Once you make bail, you should have a full charge to head for the border.
One could easily spend a few hours downtown, and return to a car that's added 80 miles of range or more. Hopefully TM listens to my suggestion of putting a supercharger in Primm. Until then, downtown might be a viable option for LV visitors.

Thanks for the info Darmock. How was the drive from Barstow to Vegas? Do you have details on cruising speeds and how much rated miles is needed to make the commute. Any info would be much appreciated.

Was just on a trip from LA to Vegas and now im back.
On the way out I had no issues, save one to many people at the Barstow charger.
I traveled at 70-75 mph and used a/c. On the leg from la to vegas i had 45 miles when i got to Barstow. Then on the way to Vegas arrived with 35.
Charged up at the Mandalay Bay Shops over the 3 days i was there. WHen i needed to charge i was able to get a spot no problem.
I Printed out a piece of paper with my number on it so if i was finished and someone could call me. Also might print some up to put on cars to call me when they finish if there is a spot i need.
Anyway on the way home there was a nasty tail wind and i traveled at 70mph with a/c on low. Arrived at Barstow with only 14 miles left.
On the Barstow to LA leg I went more than 70 and arrived with 45 miles.

Just drove from LA to Vegas and back.

The two Venetian spots were taken by 2 Volts (frustrating!) so I ended up going to the Clark County Government Center where I knew there would be some available (thanks Darmok!). I think charging in Vegas is definitely a problem at this point as more and more people have electric cars. Agree that a Supercharger at Primm would be ideal - it would keep them away from the big city and it is consistent with having them placed by outlet malls. It would allow a top off on the way to Vegas so you don't need to charge while there, and then again as you leave.

I left Vegas with 175 rated (time constraint) for the 160 mile trip to Barstow and I can say I do not recommend that. Had to semi-draft trucks on the way and hit 0 rated miles 2 miles from the Supercharger (dropped speed to 50 mph towards the end).

Also, there are 4 Supercharger spots in Barstow now but the two new ones were still wrapped in yellow caution tape because I assume they haven't been hooked up yet - I didn't test them.

Whenever I look at the charging options in Vegas on Recargo and Plugshare, I'm always left with the feeling that the city is underrepresented in terms of EV charging. Leaf's could never make the drive there from California, but now that there are 3000 Model S's in California, and probably another 800-1000 hitting the road every month, I think Vegas is going to need to step up and add a lot more infrastructure.

Husband and I just stayed at the Cosmopolitan a week ago. When I pulled up, the valet offered to plug the car in for me to charge; in chatting with him I figured out that they have a HPWC installed. When I went to pick up my car the next day, the valets were super busy so they asked if I would mind getting my car myself - handed me the fob - it was no big deal as the HPWC and my car is just a few spaces away! Very convenient!

ThTs great Cosmo finally bought a HPWC. Earlier in the year they still onky had a roadster charger with the model s adapter to use. I asked them about the HPWC and they said "well tesla needs to get us one". I was stunned and explained the number of cars coming to Vegas and the need for a charge and place to stay for the weekend. They were still a little slow to figure it out. I know I paid for a few HPWC's while staying there and playing.

Tesla in Las Vegas offered a bunch of free HPWC's to the hotels earlier this year which is probably how the Cosmo got one. You may have contributed, but unlikely it was spent on them.

Install costs are not free and neither are parking spaces. When Tesla gives HPWCs to prominent destinations, the destination still has to pay for the install and dedicate some parking.

I noticed that there's a HPWC at MGM the last time I was there. There's also a pair of J1772's alongside. At least with HPWC, you know no other EV will take that spot.

Those Chargepoints have two pistols each, so with the HPWC five cars could charge at once. Except, there are only four parking spaces. Also, the voltage starts at 200 and has dips, so the S will often reduce the current as a precautionary mesure.

Finally, the location is too good, because otherwise you could walk for miles in the huge MGM lot. People don't want to move when they're finished charging. An unplugged Volt was there for three days, accompanied by a C-Max Energi that apparently needed 70 hours to recharge its 6.7kWh battery.
