Any plans for Superchargers in Richmond VA or Norfolk VA?

Apparently Virginia put in an EV charging station on the west bound lanes of I-64 in Kent County:

Unfortunately, it's 110v, but at least it's a 20A circuit (according to the video from 2009). The Dominion web page mentions a possible upgrade to 240v. Maybe some lobbying to VA / Dominion Power will convince them to upgrade it to J1772 80A in both directions.
One of those dual 110v -> 240v solutions might help get double the juice.

I did speak to a very nice lady out at the rest stop and she verified that there are 2 110v charging stations and from the video, it looks like each can take 2 cars for a total of 4.

Late reply, but I would love to see a SC in this area, just above the I-95 / I-85 split. Maybe at the Southpark Mall in Petersburg? My sister lives in Durham NC, and so a SC in Petersburg would be the an important link in the chain.

That would be a good location. I'm thinking, though, Fredericksburg area with another in Emporia/Roanoke Rapids area, if Tesla is sticking with the ~ 150-200 mile spacing. The big interchanges make sense, but I think they'll be looking mostly at the I-95 thru travelers.

Any updates on a Norfolk, VA SC?

With Wilmington, DE and Salisbury, MD SC's open, a Norfolk SC is the last link for a NNJ to OBX run (I95 to Rtes 1 /13 to 158) down the eastern shore that many folks up here use to avoid the DC area of I95.

The leap from Salisbury to OBX is easily doable in an 85 kWh, particularly given that there's very little interstate so speed stays down. Means a longer stay at Salisbury, though, to get a good charge. Only wildcard is headwind and precisely where on OBX you're going (Corolla creates some difficulties).

We bring too much crap to the beach to use the S, though. Bikes and kayak need serious roof space. Even if we could manage with the S it would suck up too much range.

I actually used that charger on my first long road trip between Richmond and VA Beach. I had used too much power on the way down due to a ginormous detour on the way down (30 minutes extra driving) and needed to get a few miles. Used the Whole Foods charger, but didn't wait long enough for sufficient juice to get back. Had to sit at that place late at night for an hour to get 4 miles which proved to make the difference to reach Glen Allen SC. It's not fun.

On my 2nd trip down to the beach, I planned much better, drove slower and didn't even have to hit Whole Foods. Made it back to Glen Allen SC with 20 miles to spare. When the delivery specialist tells you that the accelerator is the single-largest consumer of power they're not joking.

I'd love to see a Norfolk, Newport News, or Williamsburg SC open up!

There is already an SC In Glen Allen, VA. That's my first stop between NC & PA. I need to charge as much as possible/as long as I can stand it in order to make it comfortably to Newark, DE. And by comfortably I mean with maybe 20 miles left; less than that if I use life support during the journey.

I haven't tried stopping at South Hill & then trying to make it to Potomac Mills, since getting to/from that mega-mall adds at least 30 minutes to the stop. But to be honest, two charging stops for a 400 mile trip is my limit of inconvenience. My wife's is around 1.5 :), so three is probably right out anyway.

I wonder if there's consideration of a Norfolk-area charger, or is that not even on the company's radar. Visiting friends in VA Beach entails a harrowing hypermiling adventure. Bummer.

Also, Potomac Mills is quite easy to get to when heading southbound, as long as you ignore the on-screen directions - I'm usually charging in under 5 minutes from exit 156.

However, i's still a bit nerve-wracking to recharge for a (relatively) quick turnaround from Norfolk/VB back up to Salisbury. If there's more than one or two EVs in the area, the available EVSEs on Plugshare could be saturated. I imagine the one HPWC in VB could get Real Popular.

Can you clue me in on your southbound route?
Take exit 156 (Dale Blvd) and follow the signs for Potomac Mills. Once you pass exit 158 (Prince William Parkway), the on-screen navigation automatically picks this route.

Here's a Google Maps illustration:
I-95 S to Potomac Mills Cir - Google Maps

On a good day, i.e. you hit a green at Smoketown Road, it's less than 3 minutes from the freeway to the charger. :)

Northbound, on the other hand, sucks. The Dale Blvd to Gideon Drive route takes much longer and backs up easily.

Thanks JQ. It's 210 miles from Salisbury to Duck I and would need to full range charge. Concern is running the a/c although at night energy demand (and traffic) would be less. And in the winter, even using seat heaters primarily, range seems to drop by at least 15%, if not more. All the crap goes down in the MDX....

Agree it's doable but I should probably try it out first time without the kids...Looks like I can Plugshare in Norfolk if i get tight.

I've run 210 miles at 75mph in the winter without a worry (flatland like Delmarva). And I don't drive more than 65mph on Rte 13 due to cops, probably average much less with stop lights and smaller towns. Though I admit that the first time I did a run like that there was a touch of anxiety.
