Tesla Delivery Fail, what should I do now?

I'm P 8,888 and since I had 85 kWh and air I was asked if I wanted December Delivery(Originally Feb/Mar). I immediately responded yes, and was given December 15-31st window. Like many of you I surf all thinks Tesla every day and dream of getting the Model S. I really do think it is a revolutionary car. On December 22nd I was called by the Delivery team and told that my car did not make the cut and would not get a 2012 VIN. On Jan 2nd I emailed to find out when I would get a VIN. I spoke to the Delivery specialist on the phone later that day( Jan 2nd) & was told a VIN had been issued! He also told me it was a 2012 VIN. He would not tell me when it was issued. I found out from the forums my VIN(3222) was issued December 27th. No one called or emailed me to let me know. So now I'm shafted on getting the tax credit in 2012 and I cannot depreciate the car(company car). I am so disappointed that I may cancel my reservation. I feel like I have been mislead. It seems that after reading many other posts, that Tesla has not been able to keep up with it's growing pains and are so understaffed that delivery and service have been poor or average at best. What do you guys/girls think about this and what should I do? A delivery manager contacted me today( at my request) and basically just said sorry about the "miscommunication".
If service is this bad I may cancel but it's hard to give up on this dream.

You've been reading the forum, you've seen all the good and bad that people have to say ... and you've seen how many current owners have put deposits down for another Tesla product.

At the end of the day, you need to make this decision based on your tolerance for risk and based on what you believe to be true as you read. Do you believe this is a ramp issue or do you believe this is how Tesla operates? Is it temporary or is it permanent?

I'm sorry you feel you were misled ~ your reservation number is fairly high however. Were you hoping for a 2012 delivery before you received the email asking if you'd take a December delivery? Or was it that the email reset your expectations?

I've never depreciated a car for tax purposes so I can't contribute anything there but you were screwed on the 2012 tax credit when your car wasn't delivered/loaded on the truck by 12/31. I don't think the model year of your VIN has anything to do with that; it's when you purchase the car.

They tried their best to get you the car in 2012 and didn't make it. Sounds like you're still getting it at a much earlier date than you would have originally - they haven't delivered anywhere near 8,888 cars. So you didn't hit the 2012 jackpot, but you're still getting it early. Sounds like a winning situation to me.

I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed. I'm sure Tesla was disappointed they weren't able to get you your car as early as they had hoped, either, but it sounds like they're still going to come in well ahead of the original delivery window – which wasn't going to get you a 2012 tax credit, either. Good luck with your decision. Certainly no one can tell you what's right for you. I can say that comparing this experience, warts and all, to any other car purchase I've ever made is still night and day. There were no stupid power games played by self-important salespeople. No agonizing hours spent at a dealership thinking "if there's any more paperwork or any more surprise costs I'm going to explode."

Presuming the company stays the course my next car will also be a Tesla. The wait for the Model C, or Model R, or whatever strikes my fancy will be a long one but I'm sure it'll be worthwhile.

Okie, I'll be totally honest with you and tell you what I would tell my own kids: You're sounding like a spoiled brat. I am not trying to be insulting or disrespectful, but that is my honest assessment of your rant. It has been well documented that Tesla was hoping to deliver 5,000 cars by the end of the year, and then revised that estimate down to around 3,000. Your reservation number is close to 9,000, and you're whining that your car wasn't delivered? Take a number and wait in line (specifically behind just about everyone from the low 3,000's right up to number 8,887). Of course I understand that you got your hopes up when Tesla sent out that email asking if you wanted to receive your car before the end of the year...But you should have taken that with a nice big chunk of realistic salt, especially given the 3,000 estimate that everyone knew about since the Q3 earnings call. Tesla couldn't possibly know how many people would want to receive their car in 2012 vs. 2013 until they asked them, right? Now, do I think that they should have asked production numbers anywhere near as high up as you? No way...They should have stuck to the 3,000-4,000's first, and slowly moved up from there if they needed to. But just because they asked you doesn't nullify that the fact that they were realistically only going to get around 3,000 cars out before the end of the year, period. How on earth could you realistically think that they were either going to triple their projected output, or that you would leapfrog approximately 5,000 other reservation holders? The "fail" is in your unrealistic expectations.

So, what should you do? Personally, I'd look at the big picture, be patient, and wait for your awesome car to arrive, especially since your revised delivery date is still relatively near. I waited over two and a half years to get my car, how long have you been waiting? And, while shifts in delivery estimates are of course frustrating, they should be expected when you consider that Tesla is a start-up company that is making the most revolutionary car of our generation. Do you have any concept of how difficult it is for ANY automobile start-up to bring a car to market and survive as a company? Let alone one as revolutionary as Tesla's Model S...And they are attempting to accomplish this during one of the most economically volatile periods in the last I don't even know how many decades! When you really think about it, it's really verging on miraculous that any of these cars ended up being delivered in the first place...There were times when I really thought that it was a realistic possibility that my $5,000 deposit would end up being a tax write-off as a loss on a failed Preston Tucker-esque investment opportunity. Yet, somehow, through the ingenuity and genius of Elon Musk, Franz von Holzhausen, George Blankenship, and the entire Tesla team, I now have not just Motor Trend's Car of the Year, but a true Car of the Future sitting in my driveway, plugged in and charging up. So if I were you, I would try and have a little bit of respect for that, and perhaps calm down and get a little perspective before you talk about "fails."

For the record, there's nothing wrong with being disappointed that you don't have your car yet. Over the last year, my delivery estimates went from late summer, to early fall, to late October/early November, to December/January. But it eventually came, as it has for a few thousand (not hundred, but thousand) other reservation holders. Your turn will come, and pretty soon at that. And regardless of what you thought might/hoped would happen, you had to know that a start-up company such as this was likely to have growing pains, fits and starts, stumbles and recoveries. Personally, I judge the success of a company on how well the recover from mistakes, rather than expecting that they will never make mistakes in the first place. And at the end of the day, Tesla is making, and delivering an amazing product. You want to know if you should cancel your reservation now? Ask anyone who has taken delivery of their Model S, even someone whose car has glitches, or didn't arrive in perfect condition, or was delivered missing something...Ask ANY of them if they would return their car if they could, or if they would have cancelled their order knowing what they know now. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone. Maybe a couple of people, out of several thousand. MAYBE...

Lastly, I want to reiterate that I'm really not trying to be insulting, but I was just really struck with your ungrateful and undignified sounding characterization of this situation. Tesla is by no means a perfect company, and the Model S is by no means a perfect car. They are both works in progress. And this forum, and the official Tesla forum have been very useful places for reservation holders and interested parties to learn about Tesla, share information and experiences, and even respectfully discuss the mix-up, blunders, faux pas and false steps made along the way. But it is almost always conducted in a respectful and constructive manner. If I were you, I'd take a step back and try and get a little perspective on the big picture. And if you still want to cancel, hey, that's your decision...You'll just move someone else who is eager to get their Model S one step closer to getting their dream car.

Either way, best of luck to you with whatever decision you make. Namaste.

IMO Don't give up your reservation. When you get the car you will forget all about this. I would not do it.

^ what he said.

DITTO......I wanted to say that but I was being nice. STOP WHINING!

Okie, I have the opposite issue, I am P10010, only reserved on July 2nd 2012, so I could take a test drive at the Mawah, NJ "Get Amped Tour". The original estimate was "Spring/Summer 2013", ok fine. Then I received the finalize email in early December, and did. Now the delivery estimate was moved up to "February/March 2013", great it's coming sooner..

Today, I get the call, with my VIN, "your car is on a truck on the way to the east coast, it will be delivered in the next 2 weeks" WOW! I wasn't expecting this at all.. Was actually hoping to avoid winter with the new car, but I'll deal with it.

My point is, you have to be flexible when dealing with a new product/company, sometimes they surprise you with good news, sometimes bad news, roll with the punches, it will all be worth it in the end :)

All I can say is that the December delivery email made it abundantly clear that they would try to deliver as many cars as possible by the end of the year but that they could not promise anything. Frankly, if you assumed that it was a guarantee you read it wrong.

Beyond that, I'll tell you that it's a fantastic car, totally worth the wait and you're still going to get it several months earlier than you might have otherwise. If you decide to keep your reservation you won't regret it.

IMHO, don't cancel cause once you get your Model S, all the angst and past issues goes away. The car is a JOY to drive and to own. If you cancel now, you basically experienced the "pain" but not the joy. I waited 3 years and it was worth every minute. The journey made the first drive so much sweeter. Hang on in there!

I don't know why you are upset I have a reservation ahead of yours and didn't get it either. not to mention that I actually had it paid in full Dec 18th. my delivery window was originally dec 19 to Jan 2. All I was told was it didn't leave the factory on Dec 24 because it was a holiday and that it would definitely leave by the 31st. When my Bill of sale and temp registration showed up it said Jan 2. but no one at Tesla could tell me where my car was. after a week of emails to Tesla, UPS Logistics and Matson Shipping; I finally got to speak with a Delivery Specialist (today). He found my car sitting in storage at the port of oakland. it seems it never got loaded on the ship. This is three weeks after I paid for the car and was told that it had been shipped to me. So Now it will be another week and a half before it gets to me. Even though I paid for it in 2012 (and aparently left the factory 31 dec) my paperwork was all dated Jan 2, 2013. you talk about being shafted, I should have qualified but they got the dates on the paperwork wrong. I also found out that the delivery specialists did work on Dec 24 so It could have possibly left the factory then instead of a week later.
While I am upset about not getting my car when it was promissed, I am mostly upset and frustrated with the communication from Tesla on this matter. If they had come out, when I first asked for a status update, and said that I would not be getting my car until xxxx date BECAUSE of yyyyy (instead of lying). I could have been forgiving about the delay. It is their failure to communicate anything after repeated requests that will be their eventual downfall, if they can not correct it in the near future.

Everyone at work thinks I lied about buying a Tesla. the big joke at the office today was "did you get it yet?" every time they asked I had to say no. They would just snicker and walk away. One person asked me 5 times.

+1 I wouldn't cancel. Part of the whole "first adopter" thing is not just the car itself. It's also Tesla surviving, and squaring away the problem areas. I think they will and in a year we'll be talking more about floor mats, radar detectors, and awesome software upgrades.
I do not agree with the "whining, spoiled brat" thing. My brilliant shrink wife always says: "feelings aren't right or wrong, they're just feelings." I understand that investing this kind of money (even for a dream) can mean different things at different levels for each individual. It can be more of an emotional roller coaster for some.
Get the car and let's laugh about this next year and talk about what a great job Tesla did in working out all the bugs.

I want to clarify. I would have been happy to get the car in 2012 and I would have been happy to get it in 2013. I am not disappointed that they missed the 2012 delivery window. But since the VIN was assigned in 2012(Dec 27th) and they never notified me a worse case scenario came to fruition. Since I did not pay for it in 2012 I cannot take the 2012 Bonus Depreciation and because I'm getting a 2012 instead of a 2013 I've lost resale value. Together that comes to over a $10,000 swing. $10K may seem trivial to many of you but hurts me. A 5 minute phone call on Dec 27,28,29,30, or 31st to let me know my car had a VIN would have avoided this situation. I have a thick skin so calling me a spoiled brat doesnt hurt me. A $10K swing does. Thanks to many of you who offered sage advice that was very helpful. Hoping Tesla rights the ship(delivery portion) and becomes the most successful car company in the world.

Bonus Depreciation has been extended for 2013, so you can take the $11,160 in 2013, since you will not be placing the vehicle in service until 2013. It is odd that you paid for the vehicle in 2012 and have a 2012 VIN, but that should not impact the Bonus Depreciation. Caveat: I am not a CPA and you should seek professional advice for the Tax and accounting impacts of this purchase, etc.

Think I'm going to get a shirt that says "Tesla Delivery Survivor"

Seriously. 22 days and counting since I was loaded on a truck in Fremont, still no word from anyone yesterday.

I think most have agreed that in Tesla parlance, there is no difference between 2012 and 2013 model years. It likely will have minimal, if any, affect on resale value. Tesla goes by version numbers, not model year. Even some insurers are still only showing 2012 Tesla Model S in their systems, regardless of when it was put into service.

He stated he has not paid for the car yet so it will be placed in service in 2013. The VIN doesn't matter for tax purposes. Yes, it sucks if he planned to have the credit and now doesn't - that could have tax ramifications as he may have done things differently had he known. As for the resale value, anyone who knows about Tesla ignores the model year and only cares about the version. And you might be getting an insurance discount because it's an "older" car. But maybe I'm just a glass half full kind of person.

But as the others have said, once you get your car you won't care. It's like having your own roller coaster and Zingo or Wildcat would definitely NOT fit in your garage and would cost more than $10k :)
