Delivery Tracking

Tesla has the capability to track Model S vehicles. They have an app that will shortly be able to do it on iPhone and android. They tracked a vehicle for the 400 mile challenge. They are now using a third party to transport their vehicles and the delivery specialists seem to be unable to locate the cars and thus cannot provide estimates for delivery times. Many have posted delivery experiences when they have been given minimal notice that the car is arriving. Others, like myself, have received no response from Tesla weeks after the vehicle left Freemont. Why can't they use their own, built in tracking system to locate each Model S traveling to various parts of the US?

Think of it as "Find My iPhone" for the Model S.

For the most part the cars are inside metal vans making cellphone reception poor at best. And this would be a full time job for several people. I can think of better uses for Tesla's money.

Could Tesla require the trucking company to have the driver call Tesla once a day and report location or carry a GPS transponder Tesla could track as part of the contract?

Most company trucks have a transponder these days. Whether or not the trucking company dispatcher will forward that information is another matter. I'm not in favour of having the truck driver call daily. If there are six cars that would add an hour to his day (assuming it takes an average of ten minutes per call, which is probably close to reality) that is better used for resting rather than working. (I don't want an accident that would slow delivery even more.)

Hmm. I did not know that they were being transported inside metal vans. That would surprise me. I heard that they are in covered transporters. This is first i hear about metal enclosures.

I've used my cell phone inside some pretty well covered places before. Certainly inside elevators. I would think that at some point during its Journey the car should be able to call home, at least while it is being detailed or charged. As to a fuill time job for several people, think Google maps traffic updates. Thousands of androids send their locations daily and google is able to track them and make traffic intelligence out of that. All Tesla has to do is forward the message with coordinates from the proper car to the proper owner via email, bypass the DS. They can use a little perl/TCL/java script for that.

I think that Tesla could have done many things to make our lives easier and chose not to, or were not able to for, one reason or another. We're the early adopters, the hurt has just began.
