Delivery at store or service center?

Has anyone taken or plan to take delivery at their local store or service center? Whenever I finalize and take delivery, I would probably want to do that since my schedule is so unpredictable. I'd rather be able to just go to the store or service center on a Saturday and pick it up.

I checked this option, but because of the weird way Tesla's handling these earlier-than-anticipated deliveries (the "want your car in December?" bunch), and them being overworked . . . they won't do that for me. Instead I have to (and did) suggest a place for me to have the car delivered (my house isn't practical for an 18-wheeler, methinks). Never mind that I can be at the store with half an hour's notice, 24/7. Oh well.

Sorry, I know you're asking the reverse (I did plan on a store delivery...). I'm curious if any other "December surprise" people are able to take delivery at the store, though!

Delivery at the service center could easily get you the car a week earlier.

I recently heard the same from a delivery rep, so I called Tesla yesterday and switched my delivery preference to the Santa Monica service center after initially responding online that I wanted to take delivery at my home. Hope that does in fact increase the likelihood that I will take delivery earlier in my 12/15-12/31 window.

From what I see here on the Mid-Atlantic (Philly area) it looks like all the cars are being delivered direct to homes from the factory. Mine is on a truck headed for my house now and due to the year end crunch my DS will likely not be able to be here for arrival. She said they are setting up virtual delivery support for all of us directs with no DS
Present. I really must say that my DS (Jamee) has been outstanding!! Even though she is running flat out 7 days a week she is still on top of things and always upbeat.

...if allowed. They don't appear to be letting me do this. ;-(

Good to hear I'm not the only one in this situation, but I'm curious, are you really talking to your DS? My only contact is someone in California. I guess maybe he's my DS (never was told that) but I figured he was more of a pre-delivery coordinator since he isn't even on the East Coast, thus won't be there for my delivery and won't be the person who eventually gives me any in-person walkthrough. Maybe DS doesn't mean what I thought, though. ;-)

There seems to be some pretty extreme inconsistencies with DS communication. Some forum members seem to be on a first-name basis and have daily contact, including photos sent of their car still at the factory, and some members seem to never hear from their DS until the day before their delivery. This is just an observation I've made reading the forums every day since I knew about the Model S . I'm clearly a late(er) P#, reserved in January, so I don't expect a whole lot of contact just yet, but all the emails I've sent to delivery@teslamotors have gone unanswered, too.

I agree with the mid-A observation. I'm in DC and got a call from a CA pre-delivery person in response to filling in the online form - that person specifically said that they could only get the car to me in the early delivery time frame (12/15/ - 12/31) if I accepted home delivery. If I wanted delivery at a service center it was going to push me back into late 1st quarter, 2013. I said yes to home delivery although I feel very sorry for the driver of an 18 wheeler in NW DC!

No doubt there has been significant inconsistency here. Some DS's, for a variety of reasons, are better able to keep in touch with people waiting for their cars than others. Because of this inconsistency, Tesla is ramping up an inside delivery team to assist the DS's with a lot of the communication that was originally their responsibility. So, to the extent that you have questions about anything other than the date/time/location of your delivery, you should try to steer it towards someone inside Tesla as opposed to the DS in your part of the country. I'm sure they don't have this nailed down perfectly yet, but they're trying hard, I think, to get it there.

That said, Tesla's not a large company, and individuals within the company all do a really good job of trying to be communicative and keep customers happy. So, if you have the name of someone (anyone), use it! E-mail or call them. Most send their direct contact info when they e-mail you replies, so make friends with someone once you make contact and have them help you. They want you to be happy and feel like you have the information you need.

This has been my experience too. Just since last week, there are now 4 separate folks at Tesla handling my production/delivery (via email communication). Reservation Specialist, Credit Specialist, Product Specialist and last but not least, the all important Delivery Specialist.

I first met my DS in the summer at the DC Get Amped Event. She was just so excited to meet everyone and made a point of letting me know she was hoping to deliver my new S to me when it came.
I've made a point of staying in touch with her since. I know that as the ramp up has hit lately these poor folks are just getting swamped and the factory has moved to the inside delivery process to help provide some relief in those cases where a connection didn't already exist with a DS. The previous comment was on target...making earlier connections and friends has helped ease the process for me, no doubt. But even in my case it doesn't look like my DS will have a chance to be here for the delivery. But I'm just fine with that. She has watched over me more than I expected so far, and even though she won't be here, she still has my back. Tesla is truly fortunate to have such great customer facing employees representing them. Good job George B. (and my gal Jamee!!) Bottom line is that I know Tesla is doing everything possible to get as many cars to folks by year end while still being commited to maintain a pleasant delivery process for everyone.

I got the exact same story from my Product Specialist (Julia). She was super nice on the phone and when I inquired about store pickup to maximize flexibility she said that they can only do the early delivery (12/15/ - 12/31) for me by shipping directly to my home.

I hope I can pick it up from one of the stores in california. I live in the bay area, but I won't have a ride to the factory, where I would love to get it. Will likely take the caltrain to the menlo park station. maybe I should call the stores and find out.

Okay...just spoke with a representative in Menlo Park, CA store and they said I can have it delivered at their store. I can't speak for other cities and states, but I'm sure you can call the store directly and find out.

Remember that when Tesla says "at home" they're really saying "someplace other than a Tesla facility." I took delivery of mine today at my office, which went off perfectly. Based on my experience today, though, I'd caution that you choose a place with EV charging very nearby--my car had <10 miles of range when it came off the truck. (Fortunately, we have 5 Chargepoint chargers at my office.)

I told them I would take delivery at Costa Mesa up to December 27 or factory if it is between December 28-31. I suppose this means we are doomed to wait until the end of the month. Maybe we will be the last one delivered this year! Anyway a little New Year's vacation to the Bay area sounds like fun.
