Cost To Drive Roadster

I went on my afternoon cruise yesterday and drove 19 miles. It appears that it cost me $1.19 at 17 per Kwh. Had I driven my Pantera, the cost would have been about eight dollars to make the same drive. Nine miles per gallon and using two gallons of premium. Once I get my seperate meter installed it looks like my energy cost will be about 50 cents for the same drive! Incredible! So it cost me about 16 times as much to drive the Pantera. If my numbers are correct, this is way better than I expected! :biggrin:
 
I actually tweeted about spending so much (fuel, but also money) commuting to work and back. And really 2 gallons almost gets me round trip, not just home.

Controlling the electric domestic water heater thru a 50 minute (max) timer > 50 Amp contactor removes a lot of kwh waste at this location. Seems like it might be more than actual Roadster usage, but who really knows?

I ran through the numbers today and the cost/mile for the Roadster is even less than my wife's Prius by 18% and the Roadster is much more fun to drive.

Actual 2004 Prius costs (in service Oct. 2003):

Miles: 143,172, Fuel costs: $6,483.92 ($0.045 /mile), Maintenance and tires: $10,030.80 ($0.070/mile) (I buy a lot of tires and do more maintenance than just the bare minimum), Total cost per mile: $0.115

2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16,174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18,384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21,755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16,177 miles
2010 -- 65.2 mpg 12,134 miles
2011 -- 66.9 mpg 11,272 miles
2012 -- 69.0 mpg 14,960 miles (incomplete)
 
Some can do even better than that! We put in solar panels at home and generate more electricity than we use--including charging the car. So Southern California Edison pays me to drive the car!
They are putting solar EV panels on my roof as I write this :tongue:

We have had solar hot water for over 15 years. We love it! :tongue:

I did some quick math the other day:

Not bad for a car that can do 0-60 in 3.7!

I assume your price per Kwh is your grid price. Since you lose about 25% going from grid to battery you need to adjust for that inefficiency. That raises your cost to about $0.033

Also 225 wh/mile is "very good" - maybe 55mph? My average usage is about 250 wh/mile at 65mph when there is no net elevation gain and only minimal gross elevation gain.
 
Wow, you guys get 225wh/mile and 250wh/mile? I struggle to maintain 280wh/mile. The current reading on the VDS for the past 600 miles is 295wh/mile.

I need to tone down on the lead foot. Or maybe just the hills and stuff in Seattle area.

On Saturday I drove 45 miles (40 miles on freeway), net elevation gain of 1,300', usually 60 - 65+ mph, temp were mid-60s, no heat, softtop, windows up and used ~ 280 wh/mile. The return trip was essentially the same route and I ended up at the entire 90 miles ~ 237 wh/mile - so the return was sub 200 wh/mile.
 
Hmmm... How about...

Battery pack to last 100,000 mi and cost $30,000 to replace.
That's $0.30/mi in battery wear and tear.

Rear tires (AD07's) $750 to replace last (me) about 7500 mi.
That's $0.10/mi in (rear) tire wear.

So I'm already up to $0.40/mi.
That battery replacement is the big unknown. Other stuff is close to noise.
 
The local tire store sells me Contential DWS Extreme contact and they include mounting and balancing. To me they are a much better value as the cost is half and they lasted me more than twice as long as the intial Yokohama's. I think dry traction is not quite as good but if I really push the car it is the front end that loses traction first not the rear end. And the Contentials are better in the rain and even snow.

As for the battery pack the jury is still out. Hans in Germany got over 150,000 miles from his battery and not sure if he pushed it at the end to an early demise. So it may last as long as the Prius. And I am hoping the price will be under $20K the when the time comes maybe even $15K.

As for the watts/mile on relatively level roads at 55 I can be under 220 watts/mile. While I had a lot of fun earlier on I now mainly drive for range.

After all I told my wife I got the Roadster to save money :biggrin:
