It's never bothered me. Sometimes I mouse over to see what the thread is about, but mostly the mouse is on the other side of the screen (to pick up 'last post'), so I never notice it.
So put me down as a 'don't care either way'.

Well, turns out this is an option. I can adjust the number of characters in the preview or disable it entirely. I've added a poll to this thread so people can vote on it and in a few days I change the setting accordingly.
I find them useful at times (when I'm wondering what the heck some new thread is about), but annoying at other times (when just trying to scroll the page)
Best compromise I've come up with is to attempt to keep my mouse pointer just off the left edge of the list, so that it doesn't encounter any links when I scroll the page.
@Johan, where is the option to disable in browsers? I did a quick check in IE and Firefox and couldn't find it. Searched for tooltips and mouse over.
@Doug, thanks!
I'm trying to understand the circumstances under which they pop up unintentionally. That never happens to me when browsing on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone.
Ditto. That's why I'm in the 'don't care much' camp.

I do find them useful since they're only there when I want them.
