He had to move couple breakers around to make room for the 50amp circuit breaker.

Cut hole in drywall for the receptor (14-50R)

Short run (in my case) from panel to just directly below.

He used a wire that's rated for 72 amp, that way it wouldn't run hot. He didn't know my MC240 was only capable of handling 30amps so it's a bit overkill but who knows what I'll install in the future.

That for $275 plus tax.

My electrician just finished my new NEMA 14-50.

I've used him for all my other properties electrical work. Good price, clean work. Takes pride in what he does, a rare trait among subs nowadays.

I just used 77 Electrical based on Jackyche's suggestion. He did good work. Attached is a pic from my setup. I had him run conduit around the door in my garage so I could tuck the cable away in the corner (anywhere else would block our ingress/egress to the door you see pictured). The total was ~$550 or so.

Update - SolarCity is coming back next week to change my 6-50 to a 14-50 (and I guess the others they did in the seattle area). I forgot to ask if they're charging for this, I was assuming not -- and just the other day got the bill for the original install, maybe I should have waited longer to pay it.

Interesting. When I had my SolarCity visit, he came with a 6-50 despite me explicitly saying I wanted a 14-50. He ended up making a trip to the hardware store to get a 14-50R since he didn't have one on hand.

(I'm planning on installing a separate line for the HPWC, not upgrading it from a 6-50R but rather leaving the 14-50R for friends and/or a second vehicle in a few years.)

SolarCity called me about this as well. I followed up with Tesla and they confirmed the 6-50 is ok. You just need to make sure they include the correct adapter with your car.

I figure if the 6-50 works they I don't need to risk someone messing around with the wiring again and breaking something.

Tesla also mention the 6-50 is what people are using who are getting the HPWC. I'm not in the market for it, but I guess I'm future-proofed.

ah, I was under the impression that they didn't want to give out 6-50's except to those waiting on the HPWC or something (at least for now til they start selling a large array of adapters). the 14-50 seems more standard though, if solarcity is going to charge me for this maybe i'll not do it

Talked to my delivery specialist about it. He is making sure the right adapter is included with the car. It's an extra $45.

No charge for the followup visit to change it from 6-50 to 14-50, and no reinspection needed (they phoned the inspector already). so just a bit of time vs 45$.

Got a quote/estimate this morning for $400 for just permit, outlet, 5 feet of wiring Really considering DIY now.
