In general, yes. But not if you do it right! Here's what I call my LED BOMB. Otherwise known as my garage light. This thing used to be 100W of incandescent. It is now 23 W of LED. and it is way brighter and about 4x more useful than before... and as you can clealy see, there is NOTHING "spot" about it! The original light just made a puddle of light on the floor right under it. I couldn't see my shelves at the outside walls at all. I can now! From my page:
Garage Opener Light

Don't make me post links.
Yeah - OK - Obsession to you, side hobby to me.
Along with the flashlights I switched most of the house to LEDs and many of the car bulbs, but I tried to use mostly off the shelf parts.
(Easier to do these days compared to when you started blazing the trail).

Thoughts on this one? WL60 Cordless LED Work Light with 60 LEDs. AC and DC Rechargeable. Bright LED Light for auto repairs, repair light for homes and businesses.

60 leds, 240 lumens, $50.

Ok, I get that LED flashlights are way better than the old incandescent flashlights. I totally get that. I use LED flashlights myself, and the light quality is light-years ahead.

But are LEDs really ready for home lighting? Today, CFLs are dirt-cheap and use 1/4 the energy of an incandescent light bulb for the same amount of light. In terms of lumens per watt, most LEDs are not even as efficient as CFLs and they cost a whole lot more. They are steadily improving, so maybe in a few more years LEDs will make sense, but at this point is there any compelling reason to replace my 22 watt CFLs with LEDs?

This topic was about flashlights, so it might be better to ask your question in this other topic that went into home lighting details:

LED Lighting

Sure, CFLs are cheaper, but I find many don't last nearly as long as advertised, and they contain mercury which I think are reasons enough to consider LED instead.

Ok, I'm reposting into the other thread. Just looking at the last few posts in this one though, it appears to have strayed into home lighting as well. Mods lying down on the job?

TEG dragged it back on topic, so no need to move posts. Anyway, is a work light a flashlight or general lighting?

The worklight is battery powered and portable, seems more "flashlightesque" to me, which is why I posted in this thread. I suppose I could have started a "Rechargeable LED work light" thread but I think it would be sparsely populated .

It wasn't JRP3s question I was saying may be better in another thread, it was johnrs' comment about CFLs...

I would be interested in LED kits that would replace the Roadster dome, trunk and Headlights.

Door lights and a trunk lid light would be nice as well.

Also charge panels like the Milbank need a LED (switched?) to see the plug in a dark enviroment.
