Roadster's PreSales Pass EV1 1st year
From the EV1 Wiki page:
Manufacturer General Motors Production 1996-1999 (1,117 units)
1997 Model Year: 660 units
1999 Model Year: 457 units
We get this:
You'd better be quicksharp, though - Europe will get just 250 Roadsters for 2009, and Tesla's Darryl Siry tells us that 50 of them have already been snapped up.
Tesla Roadster news - Tesla: lots more to come - 2008 - News - Top Gear
And this:
Tesla, the US company behind the £92,000 vehicle, says it already has orders for 1,100 in America and is increasing production at the Lotus Engineering plant in Norfolk.
Green machine: The £92,000 electric sports car that does 125mph in complete silence | Mail Online
Makes the total 1,150 Roadster sold. Surpassing the 1,117 EV1 units delivered.

Had the EV1 been offered for sale, its numbers could be much higher. (Or much lower, depending on what the actual price of the car truly was...)
Also, the article talks about deliveries, not orders... it's not clear how many cars Tesla has delivered right now (5? 16?)... but they're still a long way from reaching 1000+.
They'll almost certainly pass the Tucker Torpedo by year's end, though :)
I actually have a list somewhere of all the milestones Tesla might attain... I'll dig around for it...

Yes! If you find it, please post it as a new thread. It will be fun to track it over the next few months!

That's a good suggestion graham... but I didn't see it before I posted (less than 1 minute separates our posts). Maybe a moderator can split this off.
In any case, Vector and Tucker are both seriously threatened right now. Unless there's some kind of terrorist attack in the San Carlos area, those icons are doomed to fall in a matter of weeks.

CommuterCars, Zap, ACP, Bricklin ...
On the other hand, - 10,000,000+ cars and trucks are manufactured and sold in the United States every year.
- 70,000,000+ vehicles are produced annually worldwide.
- 600,000,000+ cars are on the world's roads

That EV1 number is only near (last two numbers inverted) the Wiki named first year of production. No offense to your sources but that thousand-car difference makes me doubt the other numbers.
Wiki total 2,234
1st year total 1,171
List Number 1.117

I wonder about The Major's small run cars. Prowler, Chevrolet SSR, Solstice, Viper, New Thunderbird, PT Cruiser convertible.
How many do they allot for these specialty (mostly retro) cars.
