Went to the new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Ashburn at the ONE Loudoun center off Loudoun County PArkway this evening. Wife and I noticed a GE Wattstation at one of the parking spaces in front. Unfortunately the spaces don't seem to be marked as reserved for EV's.

It appeared to not be working as of yet, but I've never used one and am not sure if they remain dark until you place your card on it? (From a quick web glance it appears that's how they work?). We were running late on the way in, and it was raining on the way out, so I didn't twiddle long.

Neither Recargo nor Plugshare had it listed, so I entered on both as not yet operational. The http://www.gewattstation.com site doesn't list it either... as a matter of fact they don't seem to list but 1 within a couple hundred miles of me...

Are all GE Wattstations part of a single network that you join and use from that? Or can they be operated independently by the business they are installed at?

Hope this helps future folks looking for a juice-up...

Going through Richmond to Raleigh

I'm going 277-279 miles from just north of DC to Raleigh, NC. I have several promising options in Raleigh--Tesla Service Center 10-15 minutes away (I know, call ahead), North Hills mall 5 minutes away (2 free chargers), a Chargepoint charger downtown, and it looks like some other Raleigh city public chargers downtown. (I hope not to have to go downtown, though!) If nothing else, I'll borrow my parents' car and leave the car at the mall or some other public charger overnight. ;-) This won't impress my parents, but I'm fine with that.

But even with a range charge, we should charge on the way down, and Richmond's almost halfway there. 277 seems too borderline, and I don't want to arrive empty and spend all weekend at the mall, charging, anyway. ;-) Here's what I've found, but I'm interested in hearing from anyone who's used any of these or has other suggestions, especially in or South of Richmond. I'll be charging on the way down on Friday (I know, why didn't I post earlier this week?), hopefully mid-day or early PM, and coming back Sunday (who knows when).

1. The Omni Hotel's Tesla-installed quasi-high-powered charger (70 amps, but not a HPWC) is only for people staying overnight (I asked). ;-(

2. The Science Museum (aimed at kids, but that's okay) has a couple of Chargepoint chargers, but in case they're in use or broken, I need backups. Plus I read elsewhere I'd only charge 15 miles per hour!

3. Then there are Ford, Chevy, and Nissan dealers and Enterprise rent-a-car, which I know I should call ahead to make sure any of them would let me use them. Also it sounds like people have had pretty inconsistent experience with places like this so I don't want to rely on them, and I don't know how powerful their chargers are (any better than the Science Museum?)

4. There's a KOA that someone at the TM forums used and it sounds like they may have 50 amp service; it's north of Richmond, but I guess that's okay...just not sure, what do you do while charging at KOA during the day? I mean it's a campground so I guess I have to hunt a deer to eat or something? (Kidding, but sorry, I'm a city boy.) ;-)

5. Oh and get this, Chargepoint lists a (non-Chargepoint) Museum of Transportation in downtown Richmond, but that's actually in Roanoke--nowhere near Richmond. I wonder where Chargepoint gets their non-Chargepoint data from!

Thoughts? I'd originally thought the Science Museum was most promising, but as slow as it is, the I'm glad I finally looked at the KOA--it seems like a better bet. Though I doubt my other half will be impressed...I wish there were superchargers somewhere between here and Raleigh.

Any other recommendations in or around Richmond? For example, anyone charged at Heritage Chevrolet or Priority Nissan in Chester and if so, were they cool with it and how powerful was the charger? Any first-hand public charging experience at all (especially on a trip) in or south of Richmond???

The other thing I'm not sure of is...how much should I top off on the way down/back? In theory if it's 50/240, I'd get back 30 miles per hour. Given the 277-mile trip, would 30 extra be enough? 60?

I'm a bit nervous--first time trip and all. ;-) I think I'll cross-post on Tesla's forums as well.

My friends and I perform a yearly surf trip from Ottawa to North Carolina. This year, I decided to take on the challenge of driving my P85 down and taking an extra day in the process. The route we usually take is just how Google Map lays it out (http://goo.gl/gosgh). Through some initial planning and research on plug share, I'll look to make stops as follows for charging: Syracuse NY, Wilkes-Barre PA (overnight here), Newark DE, somewhere in Delaware or Maryland along the DE1-S / US-113 S, Norfolk VA (overnight again here) and finally into Rodanthe, NC.

I don't suppose anyone has some high current electrons they're willing to share for some fun conversation and/or gifts from the north! (Ottawa has some really good maple syrup!). If not, perhaps some knowledge of any reliable stations in the previously mentioned stops? I have the obvious list from plug share, but if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to pass them my way!

Hey guys, I'll start a new NoVA thread here just to get organized:

Now that the Tysons store is open and the weather is nicer, why don't we do a get-together there? Looks like they have Tesla parking and chargers for anyone traveling from farther out (will need an adapter).

I spoke to a couple of advisors in the Tysons store over the weekend and they said Tesla has no formal opening event planned there yet, in fact, they have not even done any press releases or other marketing for the store given it's "sudden" opening a couple of weeks ago. I guess if they do an event, we could just go to that instead (or as well).
I was thinking we can meet in the store or lot, take pics and go grab some steaks and a cocktail. Oh yeah, I also need to test drive Andrew's P85+ once he gets it as well:biggrin:. I've been amazed at how cool other Tesla owners have been and there is never a loss for topics of discussion: upgrades, new Tesla releases, performance, TSLA, rumors, etc., so this should be great.

Here is an updated list of those who have expressed interest. I'll update as we go along and will also cross-post in the Tesla Motor local forum. The main question is when is the best date in, say, June?

Long time lurker. First time poster.

My wife will be driving her Model S from PA to Rockville this week. Even though the Delaware Supercharger should be fine for the round trip she may go into DC to meet friends, dine, etc. Also there are the inevitable miles she will put on when giving demo rides to friends:cool:

So just in case she needs to charge and since she is staying in Rockville does anyone have experience with plugging into a 14-50 at the Rockville Service center for an hour or two (she would call ahead if she needed it)? If not does anyone have any recommendations on the Rockville area charging locations listed on Plugshare?

Thanks in advance,
Hello Tesla Friends!

I've been working with the DC store to arrange a Tesla Circuit Meet-Up at Kingsmill Resort on May 19th at 11:00. We will meet at the James Landing Grill restaurant which is right on the James River. Kingsmill is a great place to stay if you want to stay overnight and they are now on the plug share app with level one charging. If you stay at The resort there is a free shuttle that will take you to Premium Outlets, Bush Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg.

There is also a KOA in Ashland and Williamsburg with 14-50 charging and Clipper Creek charging at the Omni Hotel in Richmond for you luck ones with twin chargers. As a back up you can always charge at our house (we have a 30 amp).

Kadira is working with HQ to get out a mass email but I wanted to give you a heads up.

Angelia

P.S.: We've started a forum topic at Sign into My Tesla | Tesla Motors on this same topic

I'm a Boston MS owner who would like to find a way to charge in NYC during theater hours - without paying $3/Hr to charge and with the ability to self-park the car (no one else driving my MS). In Boston, all garages with ChargePoint stations are self-park with free charging, as well as choice parking spots. Does anything like that exist in Manhattan? Beam parking seems to be $3/Hour everywhere, which is essetnially $3/20 miles of range, which is worse than an ICE car. Everyone else i've called off the chargepoint site requires valet parking.

I'd really appreciate help from anyone local.

Thanks.

I thought this was the plan a year or two ago, but anywho.... From WFMZ:

Drivers of electric vehicles will soon be able to recharge their batteries at select locations along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced Tuesday that it expects to open electric-vehicle charging stations at four of its service plazas this summer.

The charging stations will be available at the Bowmansville plaza in Lancaster County, the King of Prussia plaza in Montgomery County, the Oakmont plaza in Allegheny County and the New Stanton plaza in Westmoreland County.

The charging stations will be located near the rear of the plaza parking lots, generally behind the service plaza buildings, officials said.

"We're thrilled to offer our customers another energy choice when it comes to fueling up," said Jack Christensen, the turnpike commission's facilities director. "The turnpike has a track record of innovation when it comes to alternative fuels."

The eventual plan, officials said, is to offer electric vehicle charging at all 17 of the turnpike service plazas.

The charging stations are being installed through a partnership between the turnpike and the state's Department of Environmental Protection.

The turnpike commission is supplying $500,000 to help pay for the transformers, electric lines and meters. Miami Beach-based Car Charging Group will match a $1 million grant from the DEP and provide the charging equipment and services.

Customers will pay at the charging station with a credit card, although the cost has not yet been set.

The new charging stations make up a larger effort to reduce the turnpike's carbon footprint, officials said.

"This is part of our continuing plan to 'go green' not only at our service plazas – but at all other facilities and even with our entire fleet of equipment," Christensen said. "All service plazas now feature recycling containers as well as high-efficiency hand dryers in restrooms, courtesy of our partners, HMSHost."

Pa. Rep. Tina Davis, D-Bucks Co., has also introduced a bill that would require the turnpike to recycle.

"More than 510,000 motorists travel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike each day," Davis said. "Many travelers stop at rest areas during their trips, in part, to discard trash and recyclables in an environmentally conscious manner."
