I just had 3M Crystalline 40 tint installed all around, except for the windshield - primarily for heat rejection, but it looks fantastic too! I am looking at getting 3M Crystalline 90 done on the front windshield, which gives significant heat rejection, but is almost completely clear. The installer (Protech film solutions and Tiffany's tint in Oakville) also did the paint armour for me, and they do excellent work (far superior to the factory paint armour).

Is anyone else in the area interested in doing 3M CR 90 on their windshield. Tiffany is willing to buy a roll of this film and needs a few more people to express interest before she goes forward with it.

Let me know through this thread or via PM if you need more information, or are interested.

I would like to invite a Tesla Driver to participate in a Panel Discussion of "EV Drivers" in Aurora, just a few miles north of Toronto, on Friday, June 7th.

Every year, Windfall Ecology Centre in Aurora hold a 2-day Ecology Festival in Newmarket. This year, they are adding an Electric Mobility Conference in the Aurora Cultural Centre on Friday, June 7th. Ron Groves is moderating an EV Driver's Panel and I would like to have a Tesla driver represent the best of the EV's to participate in the panel to talk about your experience of driving electrically. Ron will prepare several questions in advance so that you will have a chance to prepare a response and there will be a short question period open to the attendees.

You will be welcome to spend the whole day with us from 9 AM to 4 PM, however, if this is not possible, the panel discussion will be around an hour midday. I'll have more specifics very shortly.

I am the organizer of The Toronto Hybrid Group and will be one of the panelists (driving an After-Market Plug-In Prius). Please email me (Erik@TorontoHybrid.ca) for more information or if you would like to participate in this Electric Mobility Conference.

Thank you for caring about the environment for our children and grandchildren ...
I have the impression that there will be no end about the Tesla grin!!
Jacques Duval is THE PRIMA DONNA automobile «connaisseur» here is Quebec! Many other reporters are «fan» of him. He is clearly the LEADER here in «La Belle Province».

In the past he was sometime very HARD and NEGATIVE on EV's ... until now ... he just got to test drive a P85!!

Here is some part of his article (I did my best to translate it to you):

«Is it me who wrote that the electric car would KILL the pleasure to drive a car?» After a test drive with a Tesla S, I must admit that I was completely wrong ... in fact I was wrong not once but twice»

«Forget your Porsche 911 S, your Corvette ZR1 or your Mustang Cobra GT. The Tesla torque is so explosive, that you, drivers of the mentioned ICE cars won't even have enough time to read the P85 Badge in the back of the Tesla S! Stay away acceleration kings, my car is much faster than yours!»

I'm so proudly overwhelmed that such an anti-EV guy makes a 180 degres turn !!
There is HOPE to save our planet !! :-)

Vancouver to Kelowna - Single Charge?

We made the trip from Vancouver to Kelowna and back this past weekend, with the idea of seeing if it would be possible to make the trip on a single...

We made the trip from Vancouver to Kelowna and back this past weekend, with the idea of seeing if it would be possible to make the trip on a single charge with our P85. We went via Hwy 1, the Coquihalla and the Coquihalla Connector, starting in South Surrey, approximately 40km from downtown Vancouver.

The total one way distance, including a stop at the Sun Country charge station in Merritt, was 368km from South Surrey (or 396 km from Vancouver). It is 95% expressway, ranging from sea level to 1,236m at the Coquihalls summit then down to 605m in Merritt then back up to 1,728m at the Pennask summit and finally back down to 343m in Kelowna. For those that have not driven this highway before, it can be a car killer!

Temperatures on the way to Kelowna were in the low 30's (C) so we had the air conditioning set to 20 the whole distance. I used the cruise control on the freeways and stuck to the posted speed limit of 110km/h. On the way back it was cooler so the a/c was off the entire way. There were four adults in the car with all of our luggage. I had my range on the "ideal" setting so started out with a full charge and 494km of range. Not knowing what the energy use would be, we planned to stop at the Sun Country charge station in Merritt to add some range.

Here are the results:

climbing up to the Coquihalla summit was effortless for the MS. Speed was constant and the a/c didn't skip a beat.

in Merritt, we had 160km of range remaining with a distance of 127km to go, so I added 50km of range to a limit of 210km

at the Pennask summit, with a distance of about 48km to Kelowna the available range was around 60km. At the bottom of the hill in West Kelowna, range on the car was 77km

final range at the Sun Country charge station at our hotel in Kelowna was 52km - so we would have made it without the charge in Merritt!

One comment on the Sun Country chargers is that every time I used one, it was only operating at 200volts, so I didn't get the range I normally get in an hour when charging at 240volts. Not sure if that's what they all operate at or what, but it should be better than that. They are easy to use though. Also there was a Volt charging in Merritt when we were there and it sounded like the ICE generator was really struggling to get the Volt up the hills. The owner said the engine was "screaming" when going up the hills to the passes.

Trip back was even better, again started with a max charge in Kelowna, generated more energy that we used coming down the steep hill into Merritt, then added 65km of range at the Sun Country station. Ride up the Coquihalla was effortless for the MS, and we could hear the howling engines of the other cars we passed going up the big hills. Only way our guests knew we were climbing was their "popping" ears as we gained altitude.

From the Coquihalla summit down to Hope (bottom of the Coquihalla), the range stayed constant at 244km, so did not generate as much as coming down from the Pennask summit, but didn't use any either! Traffic into Vancouver was light, so kept with traffic at 120km/h, and ended up with a range of 120km, so again we would have made the trip with a single charge.

The car had more than enough power to climb the steep mountain passes with the a/c on. The cruise control was flawless, keeping the car at a constant 110km/h both up and down the hills. I even had an RCMP ghost car follow me for awhile checking my speed! In Kelowna, someone unplugged the car once, may have tried to steal the plug adapter as a "prize". That would have screwed us if it wasn't locked into the charge port - another + for Tesla!

I wasn't very precise on keeping stats on the trip, but better than Broder did though! Your driving style may be different than mine, so your results may vary. Please plan your trip carefully.

Cheers!

Well last night was really close. I have never really even been close to being out of range since I got the car in December but I tested that to the limit last night.

Started of Friday when wife was late plugging the car in for a range charge for our weekend trip to Niagara falls. So left with 405km of range instead of 425km. Trip down mostly uneventful but high winds did reduce range a bit. Arrived with about 215km. The car was mostly parked all weekend and the parasitic loads and ridiculously cold temperatures reduced the range to 177km when we left at 1pm yesterday. No problem, all according to plan so far. Went to the pub in Niagara Falls for lunch. This pub has a Sun Country charger which we had used before. Flashing green on charge port when we went in. Leisurely lunch, came out and no flashing! I had let my son plug the car in and either he did not shove it tight or someone had played with it but it had only charged back to 195km. Hmmm. No problem plan still in works. Off the the nearby Laura Secord homestead where there is another sun country charger. Daughter doing a project on L. Secord so did the tour and read all the interesting history while the car charged. Left for mothers day dinner in Toronto -160km to go. 240km in the 'tank'. Traffic horrible on QEW and 401. Wicked winds and hail. 3 degrees C. Missed 407 to 403 turn off adding 7km of distance. Arrived for dinner with 35km range and 30km to get home after dinner. Trickle charge on 120V at 4km/hr. Leave at 8pm with 42km. Decide to take 404 (@100km/hr) instead of city roads home (not sure which is better). Watch as 42km range and 30km distance becomes 5km range and 12km distance. Hmmm. Really interested to see if I can make it but wife NOT interested so pull into friends house with zero range (charge now! message) and trickle charge at 6km/hr while watching the rest of the Leaf game. Unexpected social event - very nice hosts! Leave with 12km range and 8km to go. Make it home with 4km. Phew. So what are the bets? Would I have made it? I was at 0km range with 8km to go. 2 Degrees C and windy. Wish I had tried but 8pm on a Sunday is not a fun time to brick the car. One kid loved the adventure one was not so sure.

Went the whole trip in Range mode and no climate for the last 20km. So heed Doug_G - leave range for the unexpected! Lots of things piled up against us (no complete range charge, parasitic losses, faulty charge at pub, missed turn, horrible traffic, horrible weather, unexpectedly very cold).

Many thanks to the help I've received from reading the forums. I've picked up a ton of knowledge and I have read the many posts/blogs on eco-driving (Doug_G, etc - thanks). I just posted in the new owner's thread now even though I picked up my Model S a month ago.

Next weekend I need to drive from Toronto to New Jersey. I went through some preliminary numbers (I have a P85) and looked at the charging points along the way but so far, I think it would be a 3-day trip. I don't mind two days but any more than that makes it difficult to justify the time. It's great that I can get better distance now that the temperature is a little higher.

Any thoughts? Ideally, I would love to see a supercharger or two along the way but that looks like its a way off. Maybe the next announcement...

Thanks,

Hello,

I`m Norwegian and eagery awaiting my Model S this fall! For european buyers Tesla has come up with a "winter pack" which contains heated rear seats, heated windscreen wipers/nozzles and upgraded defroster nozzles on the dashboard (probably the same vents that you Canadians get for free?)

What I hope you canadian owners can answer is:
1. Does the vent upgrade make a big difference in removing ice (maybe people got it too late this winter to test it)?
2. Is the vent upgrade neccessary to remove fog properly from the front window?
3. Would you pay about $1500 to get heated rear seats and heated windshiled wipers/nozzles?
4. Have you had trouble with frozen wipers or frozen wiper fluid?

Best regards
Company spokeswoman Shanna Hendriks told me earlier this week that while the California-based electric vehicle automaker looks forward to setting up shop in Metro Vancouver — in all likelihood in Oakridge Shopping Centre — “our expectation is that it will be in 2014.”

However, a new Tesla service shop on the corner of Powell and Commercial in Vancouver has been a beehive of activity these past few weeks, with car carrier after car carrier dropping off Model Ss to be prepped for customer delivery.
Those new Model S owners, and for that matter all EV owners, owe a debt of gratitude to Vancouver-based Sun Country Highway, a company that has devoted itself to building a Canada-wide charging network.

It began in February 2012 on Vancouver Island.

“What we wanted to do is create a model that we could apply to the rest of the country,” explained company regional director Rob MacGregor. “And that was to populate strategic locations across the island with charging stations.”

Working with hotels and motels, Sun Country struck deals where they would provide the charging hardware and the hotels/motels would be responsible for installing it.

“We quickly discovered that many of these businesses were really keen to adopt this,” says MacGregor, and in a couple of months, two dozen charge stations were established on the island, “from top to bottom and side to side.”

Sun Country took that model and in May last year started at both coasts along the Trans-Canada Highway.

“And we almost met in the middle,” MacGregor says of the mid-November completion of the cross-country charging network (for a map, visit suncountryhighway.com).

The preferred distance between the Level 2 charging stations was based on the range of the Tesla Model S — approximately 300 to 350 kilometres — but as it turned out the average distance is 200 kilometres. Adds MacGregor, “And we did it with no external funding or subsidies.”

I think it's worth putting up this thread. Moderators feel free to put it in the right section.

As you know, Tesla Motors does not separate sales numbers by country.

I asked directly to George Blankenship about it, and he confirmed that Tesla won't disclose that kind of information.
:-(

So lets find the information through another means ... and keep it noted in this thread.

The Provincial license plates department keeps that kind of information. Each of us, through our corresponding networks of contacts, lets try to find out! Let's try to get BC, Quebec and Ontario at the minimum, since the majority of Model S deliveries are in those 3 provinces.

I found out for Quebec as of dec 31, 2012: 21 Model S !!

By the way, here is the complete cumulative EV sold in Quebec as of the end of 2012 (12 EV's !!):

Ventes de VÉ au Québec : Cumulatif par véhicule au 31 décembre 2012! | Roulez Electrique

I'm waiting for 2013 first quarter results for Quebec ... will post the information here.

I bet that the Model S is already in 4th position!!

Hi all,

I thought I'd ask publicly because I'm not sure where else to look besides plugshare.com...

I'm heading to the Tremblant track on the 22nd, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a higher-current charger than the Circuit Electrique at 30A in Tremblant...

I also see that a private user has a 30A plug advertised on plugshare, but nothing beyond that. I was hoping for at least 40A to at least have a couple runs around the track.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, just wanted to share my first long trip with my 60 kWh. Some inquired about it so here are some details.

For the record, I wanted to buy the 40 kWh until I understood that I wouldn't be able to make the trip to Quebec City in any circumstances. I purchased the S to be my 1st car unless for long trip/rough winter conditions where my AWD truck is more practical exception made of a 5-10 trips to Qc City when weather permits.

My ALL-ELECTRIC weekend: A success with some apprehensions. The car kept its promises

To Quebec City: I made it with 60 km of charge remaining

- Left Montreal at 1pm with 330 km of charge (MAX I can get is 336-340km on MAX range) :
- NAV indicated 261km to make it to my destination in QC City
- Once out of the Island of Mtl I put the cruise ON at 100km/h, I know it's slow but it was my first long trip with somewhat no backup along the way
- Head wind at 10km/h from the East
- Put A/C ON as outside temp was 24 to 26C
- 45 min into my trip I was averaging 180 Wh/km and was well on my way to make the distance hands down so I put the cruise to 106 km/h
- Without any issues I made it to my destination with exactly 60 km of autonomy remaining; no stop
- I would have really felt better if there would have been a Fast charger in Trois-Rivičres and if there would be a 240V plug easily accessible at my parents' place
- AVG 188 wh/km

In Qc City, I managed to plug the UMC on an home-made 40 feet extension cord and then into an oven plug (8/4 SOOW cable with male-female NEMA 14-50connectors). Dialed the amps to 30A and woke up with a full charge on Sunday. Drove to St-Raymond (50km) in the afternoon and arrived with 280km left. I plugged on 110V for 4 hours and left with 300km of charge to Mtl.

Back to Mtl: I made it again with 60 km of charge remaining

- NAV indicated 237 km to Mtl
- The first 20km was rural roads; I averaged 139 wh/km during that stretch
- Then hit highway 40 with cruise ŕ 106 no AC and right after T-R, I was averaging 159wh/km
- I put the cruise to 115 km/h no AC => I arrived in Mtl with 60km of charge remaining. No stop
- Total trip AVG 186 wh/km

Around $6-$8 and no CO2…

Conclusion: Making long distance trips in an Electric car is doable however it is not all that practical when you don't control both ends of the destination (no for everybody at least until fast chargers are ubiquitous in homes and businesses). We need a public charging point in Trois-Rivičres near the highway to remove range anxiety. You need at least a 240V charging point at destination if you stay less than 36 hours.

I love my Model S when it is gleaming clean, but I admit to being lazy about hand washing the car myself.
The Owners Manual has the following caution about using car washes:

"If washing in an automatic car wash, use “Touchless” car washes only. These car
washes must have no parts, such as brushes, that can touch Model S. Using any other
type of car wash could cause damage that is not covered by the warranty."

I would like to build a list of where Touchless Car Wash stations are located in the Toronto area so I can know where I can go to get my car cleaned.
The one location I have used is the Esso station at the north-east corner of Islington and The Queensway. I have been able to convince the manager there to give me the "Fill-Up" wash price as I am unable to buy gas first to receive a discounted car wash.

I called Esso about other locations, but they could not tell me if the car wash at a particular site was touchless or not.
Can anyone please also list locations where they have seen Touchless Car Washes in the GTA area?

My Parcel Shelf has just been delivered, so I expect that others in Canada are receiving theirs as well.
I had not seen one before and had originally hoped it was some kind of roller shade that was unobtrusive when not in use. Instead the shelf is a bit invasive in the rear storage area.
It is amusing to me how I have liked the car as it was delivered with items missing and have been reluctant to add the features as they arrived.
When I found out that the rear child seats were not removeable and required surgery to the car, I stopped them from being installed. When the Performance spoiler arrived, I liked the clean lines of the car and wasn't sure that I wanted the addition of a black spoiler onto my Sig Red car (I went ahead with it). Now, the Parcel Shelf arrives and I am not sure I like it, but it can be easily removed if I don't want it.
The shelf arrived with the "WARNING: STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD" letter that US users have reported about, even though the new design of the shelf does not use any magnets. The letter does say it "may" contain magnets, but I'm not sure why they are still including the warning in the box. I am also a little miffed that the shelf does not fold fully back on itself but insteads hangs in the air at an angle. Picky-picky.

I'm addressing a very small group of members I know... but I was wondering if anyone else was able to get Virgin Radio (95.9) on TuneIn in their cars.
