Billing issue keeps Venice vehicle charging stations unplugge (http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20120415/ARTICLE/120419709/2416/NEWS?p=1&tc=pg)d

"The city is setting a standard for eco-friendly transportation,"

Ummmm.....

The city's foray into alternative energy is off to a clunky start.

The two electric-vehicle charging stations installed a few weeks ago are covered with plastic garbage bags while the city works out how to charge for the electricity.

Unlike Sarasota, which offers free charges in its downtown municipal garage, Venice and Sarasota County, in the midst of installing its stations too, plan to charge for the electric fill up.

There are four green-lined parking spaces in Centennial Park to accommodate golf carts or electric cars. The city plans to add more chargers later.

The spaces are now being used by regular car drivers......

When the units are up and working, which...will take a few more weeks....

I admit that my first reaction to the headline was more along the lines of, "Don't they just use gondolas and vaporetti in Venice?"

These sort of "duh" moments really undermine one's faith in even local government to get things right. Did no one think about this billing question before now? How hard can this be?

The answer is easy, put an old school parking meter on the spot. Done.
