@ChargeIt!, just curious why are the first and last of the thumbnails whited out?
Minor picky privacy issue ... which may or may not amount to nothing ... they are standard issue plates. And I guess a "whiting out" on the custom vanity plates would defeat the purpose of publishing them in this thread ... but I thought at least the frames were still worth showing on the standard plates ... Hope that sort of makes sense ?
Makes sense. No point posting generic issue numbered plates. But thanks for showing the 'cute' frame slogans!

A rare plate indeed. Tesla fans (man and band) had that plate swooped up long before the car came along.

This morning I was behind a muscle car with the plate "PSI ENVY". Pulled up beside him going about 30 mph just before the road opens up in to a divided highway. He downshifted and floored it. I floored it (instant reaction, couldn't help it, like a cat that jumps when you startle it, and by the way no downshifting required!). I of course blew him away. In that moment I wish my license plate read "KW ENVY" as I pulled ahead up to highway speed.

Not quite. Googling "1001010" without context is not reallly useful.

Not totally sure about that one.
1001010 is binary for 74 which is 'J' in the ASCII alphabet.
Possibly a reference to Hackfest 74 (1001010) (http://atlhack.org/2007/05/30/hackfest-1001010-postmortem/) (which happened in Georgia which matches the plate)?
Or, perhaps a reference to the programming language 'J' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J_%28programming_language%29)?
Or maybe the driver is 6'2" tall (74")?

Some more thoughts for VFX on his Geek Plates link
(mods feel free to move this and related to a "Geek plates" separate topic)
Some Linux ones:
"Root 777" : Root = Linux computer superuser... 777 are file permissions (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/getting-started-guide/s1-navigating-ownership.html) that means everyone can read and write any file. Basically they are saying they have full access to a unix system and will let everyone else in.
"RM -RF *" : The unix command to recursively delete all your files and ignore any file protection bits. (Basically wipe out your hard disk). Danger Will Robinson.
"7DEV7TRK" - Hardware devices on Unix have software drivers in the "/dev/" directory. "7DEV7TRK" is like "/dev/trk" which means to me a software developers truck.
"Opn Src" = "Open Source" (software with the sourcecode available to all for any purpose)
ALT-F4: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ALT%2BF4
"WTF OMFG" (What The Frack? - Oh My Fracking Gawd)
"HEY STFU" ("Hey, Shut The Frack Up")
"BFG 9000" ("Big Fraggin' Gun") the most powerful weapon in the Quake/Doom game series.
Ideas on the 31337 plate here (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=1337&defid=169316).

At least the first comment was pro-electric. Most of Jalopnik and it's regulars still follow the "It's powered by coal = dirty" partial-myth.
Yes, a coal-fired power plant is dirty. There is zero debate about that.
However, as most of us here know, when accounting for well-to-wheel pollution an EV puts out about half the pollution of a gas-powered vehicle.

Hi,
That picture on the tow truck was taken traveling East on the Hayward San Mateo Bridge, not far from TM's headquarters. TM dealer plates are not an uncommon sight in the Bay Area. The odd thing is the use of an open truck as TM owns several enclosed trailers...

This was already my favorite TMC thread ...
I've had this thread tucked away for the day that I get my own EV vanity plate, and that day is nearly here.
I'll be getting one of the first Chevy Volts in a couple months -- I've been dreaming of a Tesla for years, but I can't justify a Roadster and I don't want to wait until the Model S is out in volume. So I know I'm a poser, please be gentle :) I'll be doing the 3-year lease on the Volt, so by end of 2013 I'll be back in the market, in particular for a higher performance pure EV.
I have learned that in my state (Georgia) and maybe others as well, I order the plate first, and then register the car with it. So I can go ahead and get my plate before I actually have the car. I just have to register a car on it within 2 years or it returns to the pool.
Soooo, I have gone through this entire 32 page thread and made a list of all of the plates that remotely appeal to me. I called up the state DMV and talked the clerk into checking a couple for me (all taken!) but I've got a list of 35+ plates to check. I don't think I'll be able to talk someone into checking all of them :)
Does anyone know of a way to check plate availability, either nationally or specifically for Georgia? I believe it's against the law to just "run plates" to see who a car is registered to, unless you're a cop and have reasonable cause, but just checking whether it's a valid plate might be doable.

Wow, that's nasty. Here in CA, you just start the ordering process online and it kicks you back each time it has a match.
Somewhat the same here in Ontario (CA).
You fill out a form with up to three choices...hand it in to the clerk...they input the info to the MOT computer...it either gets accepted or rejected...if accepted, you can buy it on the spot.
I don't know if our new "Green" plates work in the same manner though.
Ottawa Doug has a green plate...is it a vanity plate?...if you don't mind me asking Doug, how did you go about acquiring it?

They don't allow Green Vehicle plates to be vanity plates. They are all of the format GVAA 000 (or VEAA 000 for Vehicle Ecologique).
Telsa (Hans) got the plates for me, but according to the MTO website the process is exactly the same (and the price is the same) as for any normal plate. You just have to have a "qualifying vehicle". Currently the complete list of qualifying vehicles is:
"Tesla Motors Inc, 2010 Roadster Convertible".
(end of list)
Doug

Thanks guys for the feedback. I guess I'll try making periodic calls to the DMV to whittle down the list. They allow me to ask for 3 checks over the phone, so it'll just take me 10 phone calls to get through the list :) No big deal, I'll just spread it out over a few days so I don't get on their enemy list.
I'm really surprised that you can't find out on-line. I looked, but didn't find anything like we have in Illinois; you can try various plates until you find one that's not taken. https://www.ilsos.gov/PickAPlateWeb/index1.html

They're just dead set against electric cars, primarily because
a) they're not educated or
b) Napoleon Complex: they think the noise, power, and exhaust from ICEs make up for their tiny penises.

Here is a vanity plate for you. #443
I have a home that is Net Zero Energy; it burns nothing for heat and derives all its energy from the sun and wind for heating/AC, hot water and everything else. Heating and AC is provided by a geothermal heat pump. I make enough excess energy to drive my Tesla about 10,000 miles per year.

I wonder what percentage of roadsters in the US have vanity plates. We still have our default DMV plates but have considered vanity plates. We just wanted something a little more subtle than the typical vanity plates.
Just get the plate "USER 497". Everyone will think it isn't a vanity plate...

We are still waiting to get out of "State zero" in the build queue but have discussed trying to get
UGOTGAS
The idea being that people will mostly not see it until we tear past them... The problem is we expect to be sued for "emotional distresss" by someone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So, probably not.

Do you have your Tesla yet?
We are in Westchester County and waiting for ours........May 21/22, maybe.
Are you interested in a road rally in Westchester/Putnam/Rockland/Bergen County when you get yours?

We're still waiting, ETA first week of June! Unbearable. The first few weeks of waiting were the worst. The next few weeks were the worst too. And it went downhill from there.
If you are going to organise a rally please make a separate thread to bring in any interested parties... I'd be into it. A suprising (not!) number of friends and relatives are planning to visit in June/July to play with our new toy so I might have a passenger or co-driver...
I am also planning to do a lesson and maybe some open track days at Raceway Park road course (link) (http://www.etownraceway.com/road_course.aspx), and have already talked to the organiser about getting some NEMA 14-50's for us to recharge from but if there's only one socket then it could get ugly. It's about 55 miles drive from my house so in theory I could get there and back (and do a few laps) without a recharge but I don't want to rely on that as it would undoubtedly detract from the fun. When I swapped some emails with the guy about a month ago he had never had a Roadster down there and was quite keen to help.

That reminds me of a scene in the movie Office Space:
Peter Gibbons: So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.
Dr. Swanson: What about today? Is today the worst day of your life?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.

So, finally got my "standard" plates and can now change to a vanity plate. (Why can't we have vanity plates from the get-go??).
In FL they won't allow "protest" registrations, which means that I couldn't have anything that included "NO" such as NO_GAS or NO_OIL. I asked what statute prohibited the use of the word "NO" but no-one could quote me and I figured the tax collectors office is not a place to start an argument (actually the lady helping me was very pleasant and kind!). Other variations such as ZERO_GAS were not available; so I settled on the following:
Reef plate:
1874
And (drum roll) here's the number....
1873
I also ordered a chrome bracket and now have to wait 45-60(!) days for it to be delivered.
CT only allows 6 letters. I am thinking GASLES for my 2week old VIN 1291.
Nice!:

That's right! The letters are so big, we can only fit 6 on a standard license plate. I know what you're thinking... why don't we make our license plates bigger? It's those darn Feds... we are fed up with them for many reasons, we debate seceding all the time. :cursing:

We do have two really big registration/inspection stickers that we must place directly in front of the driver in the lower left corner of the windshield. Gotta love it.
Move the star to behind the letters and you can fit more characters on the plate.

I went to DMV in CA yesterday and got ELETRK for my Tesla. People still have no clue it is electric, uses no oil or gas, and gets up to 60 in under 4 sec. I figure i'll start the education by eletric and go from there. Other plates that were available still in CA, that I passed on were...

0 60sub4
0 oilgas

dunwgas

I hope those help anyone who is still interested for a plate in CA. I almost went with "dunwgas", although my wife's favorite was "zlch gas"
What about "past gas"...or is that too many letters?:biggrin::wink:
I was trying to get
0-60 in 3.7 down to just 6 characters, wasn't possible. So I went with what I have above for the same reason as @Ladman23. No one here understands that this is electric. Closest I came was this:

So I stuck the "N TESLA" plates on my G37. Now every time someone sees it they say, "does that mean Not Tesla?" Even my Ranger said that. Sigh.

Wrong thread? I don't see a vanity plate in that picture.

They all seem a bit odd (extra zero, and why is it 400th?, and why 10TESLA instead of 1 TESLA?), but not sure I get your meaning TEG.
They all use the letter O instead of the number 0 (zero) in places where one would want a zero.
I had that happen once with a personalized plate where I tried to use 900 (for 900cc) as part of the plate, but the DMV created it as "9OO" (with letters).
Once I got stopped and when the highway patrol tried to run the 900 (nine-zero-zero) part it came back as not a valid plate.
I wonder if those cars would suffer the same issue if someone tried to "run their plate" and used zeros instead of letter Os.
Check how a letter O looks more like a box shape, with a zero (at the end) being more oval (tall and thin):

I wonder if it is just a clerk or OCR trying to scan in and mis-entering letters instead of numbers when they create it?
I wonder what would happen if you tried to get a personalized plate with a mix of zeros and letter Os like 0O0O0O

By the way,
I think the slashes through the letters Os in "O OIL O" were added by hand,
4OOth was probably meant to be 400th as the 400th Roadster,
and 1OTESLA was probably meant to be 10TESLA for a 2010 Tesla.

WA state gets around that. In WA, the number 1 and the letter I are the same character as are the number 0 and the letter O. I'm guess they're all ones and zeros for computer purposes.

Or: 1.0 Tesla as in a 2008 model?
Or: I O(we) Tesla as in a leased/financed Roadster?
Or: 10 Tesla as in measurement of magnetic fields and referencing brushless motors?
Or: Roadster VIN #0010
Or: just someone who likes levitating frogs using a 10 tesla magnetic coil....

Nice one!!
Back in the day if you tired to get any two-number combination in front of "TESLA" (XXTESLA) all 1 though 99 choices were available. If you wanted the company name (and back then is was also the car name) you could slap a coul'a numbers on the front to get TESLA on your plate. Which number pairs would you think would go first?

FYI, "1OTESLA" is not a 2008, and not VIN#10. It is a 2010 Model 2.0

I think the TESLAXX combo is more popular.
I had seen pictures of all of these on California Roadsters:
TESLA6
TESLA16
TESLA18
TESLA23
TESLA29
TESLA44
TESLA55
TESLA64
TESLA78
TESLA84
Note, not all of those are signature 100. Some low numbered ones were taken by Founders' and VP cars, so some Sig100 customers might have not had a chance to get the plate they wanted.

1OTESLA is mine.
It was ordered meaning 2010 Tesla. Ordered it when they anounced model year as 2010. Although I got it in 2009. 10 has meaning to me. Its my birthday today 10/10 and as a soccer player I always have played with 10 as jersey number.
and yes its a letter O. I always wonder if it would mess up a parking ticket. Luckily have not gotten any to find out yet.
As for levitating frogs.... I had left the top off this morning and ran out when it started raining. Did not see any frogs leap out.

Don't you know it is hip to have software make your digital photos look like were found in an old shoebox?
(On the flip-side, people try hard to use digital technology to freshen up their old pictures... go figure...)

Note the rules in CA include a pretty funny statement:
The number '69' is reserved for 1969 year model vehicles.

Anyone have a theory what "ALIV NED" signifies?
Aussie bandit?
That banner shows the owner is a "out there" thinker.
Just took delivery about a month ago of a Very Orange Sport. I'm not so cerebral. Tried for KICK GAS; 'twas taken. Thought about GAS KIKR. Went with KIKS GAS. It generates smiles, but none bigger than mine.

At the Mercer Island Plug-in America event, I overheard a husband-wife Leaf owning couple pondering the meaning of plate 00FF00 on a nearby Roadster. When I explained that it was hex for the color green, they said "oh, ok, but it's a black car!". So I had to remind them of "green" technology. So, evidently the plate is esoteric and nerdy on two levels. Hmm, I wonder if FFFFFF is still available.
