Elon spotted commuting in CA. Odd that P1 still has dealer plates. Also, it looks like the CHMSL isn't working. Though I suppose it's possible the brakes aren't actually on and the taillights are just lit from the headlights being on.

Missing Tesla logos on the wheels hubs... Falling off? Being stolen? More likely not bothering to put them back on. They need to be removed when changing/balancing the tires.

Based on its proximity to San Carlos, I am assuming this is a VP, or even EP? Do we know if this is a production unit?

Additionally: were I to guess what would cause a Tesla to stall, I would assume something involving the firmware (over just running out of juice or something). Any other ideas?

I think I can make out a Founders' Series plate near the rear wheel, so that would mean it's a production car. Hard to know which one since Radiant Red appears to be a popular choice.

Could be anything. Hard, Firm or Software.

Is it possible to push the car when in neutral or is it tow only?

I should mention that the spirit of this thread is Roadsters out in the wild. So a car parked at a Tesla store or at the factory, or on display at an auto show, doesn't really count. Also the preference is for pictures not found elsewhere on this site.

I think it probably is F013 since there are only so many cars out there. But it's hard to tell about the stripes in that photo.

Tech Trader Daily - Barron’s Online : Vroom: Who Was In That Tesla? (http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2008/09/25/vroom-who-was-in-that-tesla/)

Vroom, vroom, vroom: I was driving south on 280 from San Francisco late this afternoon and found myself following an ultra-cool dark colored Tesla (I think it was dark green. Maybe black. Sort of but not exactly like the one above) with a piece of blue duct tape on the rear bumper. And, oh my, that car was flying. I was following him in my Prius, the official car of Santa Clara County, trying to see who was driving it (there aren’t a whole lot of them on the road so far) and before long I was doing 90, and he was pulling away.

In case you didn't know, Doug just searches Flickr for photos other people took of Roadsters. They attract enough attention that it is fairly common for someone (random) to take a picture and upload it since the cars are so rare (and so cool) right now. Other than stopping by the MP store now and then I don't think Doug is going out of his way to try to track down any Roadster owners. We also seemed to have given up "who is getting which Roadster". It was interesting when the first batches were being touted by celebrities that wanted to make a big deal out of it, but that "phase" is over as far as I am concerned.

Huh... I wonder if that picture goes along with this story: WorldChanging: The Geography of Hope & The Greening of Silicon Valley (http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/008997.html)

This was a Tesla Roadster, the turbo-charged all-electric dream car of the green-minded geek millionaire. Out in public, parked in North Beach like any other stylish ride. (Tesla’s been hard hit by the economic storm since my visit, but seems to have weathered it alright.)

We were soon joined by a knot of twentysomething hipsters, who instantly recognized the Roadster and started circling it in naked fanboy awe. The owner showed up just then – a Tesla exec, it turned out – and the hipsters started peppering him with questions and asking after the company’s founder (who they referred to by first name like an old pal or beloved guru). Turned out they were all employees of Solar City, one of the young installation companies driving California’s solar boom.

Townsend is not that far from North Beach, and a Tesla Exec probably means it was one of the VPs... maybe it was VP24! (The story does not mention the color).

The passenger seat is interesting. Is that just a baby carrier on top of the normal seat, or is it a different seat altogether?

It looks like it has non-dealer plates, but it also looks like it is missing the badge for Founders, or Signature 100 series. I wonder why?

I used to work at that Microsoft campus for many years... I wonder if I know the owner?

The seat looks like one of those booster seats for toddlers. The car actually does have a Founders' or Sig100 badge, it just doesn't show up in the last photo because of the reflection of the white parking line. It's worth noting, however, some owners do request not to get that badge for whatever reason.

Saw this Roadster (sans passenger booster seat, along with a blue Tango) parked outside of this event (http://www.vlab.org/article.html?aid=245) I attended last night at the Stanford business school. Turns out it's Signature 100, #9. It's manufacturer's ID (the first 3 characters of the VIN) is SFZ, which indicates a UK manufacture. Sig#12 and later appear to use 5YZ, which indicates US manufacture (don't know about #10 and #11). I wonder what determined that change over. Perhaps it correlates with cars that started out with DT1.5.

In case anyone misses the irony - Flat black or 'Matte' black is frequently used as a primer color as a first coat of paint before you add the real color. Typically a flat black car was a sign of someone who did home repair, and was too lazy/cheap/broke to move on to getting a real paint job. The flat black look on the Rolls is a bit of any oxymoron.

( Uh oh, quoting myself! )

Well, to be fair, I should admit that I had a flat black car for a while.
It was somewhere between "ran out of money" and "hey it looks kindof cool like that". I think I got about equal parts compliments (usually from kids) as I got quizzical/disapproving stares.

I think there were probably some who did the primer paint job intending to paint something glossy on top, but then decided to leave it that way when they liked the way the primer looked.

(A moderator may want to move all this flat/matte black paintjob talk to a different topic!)

Yes - there are several of those charging points around London. They have a standard UK domestic socket (13 Amps).

The lead in the picture is one of Tesla's prototype mobile chargers. It's the same as we have seen many times before (the box is hidden under the car in the gutter) with one of our 13A plugs on the end. I've seen them at many of the events I was at last year.

It is a Tesla. It's common for people to refer to a car with only its brand or manufacturer (or a diminutive there of). Not until they offer another model does it matter to be more specific.

In a city where I see all sorts of exotic cars regularly, I wondered how long it would take to spot my first Tesla Roadster at random. Finally, this morning, on my walk to work, a little, black Roadster passed by on Little Santa Monica Blvd. That's my first. I didn't recognize the driver, a man in late middle age, wearing a sport jacket and no tie.

And I was encouraged to see another electric car, some kind of NEV, a few cars behind the Roadster.

I really love this last photo. DC is my home town, and the best movie theater was always The Uptown (one of the last great theaters... a single huge screen, as opposed to a bunch of tiny screens once multiplexes became popular). Consequentially, I spent a lot of time around there as a kid. This area is right next to the Cleveland Park Metro station and walking distance to the National Zoo.

Anyhow, seeing the Roadster in this context oddly makes it seem more real and yet simultaneously surreal. Connecting my former East Coast life with my current existence on the West Coast. For me the Roadster is definitely a California icon, so it's strange to see it in my old stomping grounds.

Q The Tesla already uses some of your chips. Anything more you can offer electric cars?

A The Tesla is rated at 250 miles round trip on a charge. The problem with that is if you want to go to Los Angeles you've got to find some place to have a 15-hour lunch. So our goal is to have that Tesla be able to make a round trip to Los Angeles before you have to recharge. We think we're well on the way. That's just optimizing the batteries and the way they work together, the same way we do with panel cells.

That's a known "car" and Motorcycle spot off PCH. The Coffee Bean has a protected parking lot with a tiny play park and a car wash / detailer.

Clubs often stop for breakfast.
It's much more upscale than the further north "Neptune's Net".

Is it just me, or does that picture above look like the Roadster owners are afraid to pull their cars close together? It reminds me of when I got my first car... I couldn't see a hood ornament so I didn't know where the front bumper was. I wonder if it's a similar feeling when trying to park a Roadster.

I couldn't see a hood ornament so I didn't know where the front bumper was. I wonder if it's a similar feeling when trying to park a Roadster.

I parked my rental car (Prius) in that same parking lot earlier in the day, and the striping is for normal-sized cars, i.e., they're not "Compact" spaces that are increasingly common nowadays. Given that, the Roadster fits into one of those spaces with plenty of room to spare.

While a hood ornament might be useful to judge the front bumper location, it's one of those things that I "dialed in" quickly when parking my Roadster. I expect that all these owners were using similar ways to judge their parking space placement and ended up mostly centered in their slots, with lots of space around them.

The front air dam is slightly lower than many parking lot wheel stops and curbs, so you have to leave a little space in front or it'll scrape.

Tesla's white and orange roadsters on the end closest to the SpaceX building are about 3 inches apart.

It was supposed to be valet but I noticed them just guiding in owners. Since they started at one end I would think after the the first few the rest naturally parked aligned to the car next to them as had been established.

Whoever was cruising their black roadster on Harps Mill in North Raleigh about gave me whiplash.

Quietly driving down my neighborhood and here comes a small black sports car. I muse, "Hey that looks a little like a Roadster, nice car."

The car passes by going the other way and I glimpse the profile out of the corner of my eye (too many hours browsing this site pay off) "That REALLY looks like a Roadster!"

Then as I see the "Tesla" lettering across the back of the car (in my rear view mirror) it was all I could muster to 1. keep my car on the road. 2. keep my head aimed forward.

To whomever that was, thank you! I never expected to see one "in the flesh".

Oh, my apologies to my fellow club members for not snapping photos.

I'm guessing that you meant to simply say "four Teslas in a parking lot." Your use of gliders sort of threw me, since that implies that there weren't any drivetrains, battery packs, etc. in them. I suppose Tesla could be running out of room at their Menlo Park location and have taken to parking Roadster gliders around town to alleviate overcrowding and as a form of advertising/promotion!

Sightings are getting more and more common around the bay area.
On Friday afternoon I saw an orange one pulling into a movie theater in Mountain View as I was going to see Star Trek, then on Saturday night I saw a green one leaving a fireworks show up in SF. I wasn't even looking for them... Literally seeing them in front of me all over the place now.

I'm seeing them everywhere as well. My friend snapped a photo of one yesterday on the freeway in the eastbay and showed it to me (knowing that I'm a tesla fanatic ).

Yeah, it does look like that doesn't it? I'm not in the habit of wandering out of my lane, but I do sometimes use the blinker only briefly when changing lanes. I'll test the blinkers tonight and make sure they're all working. For now, I'll assume that it was operator error.

Yeah, that was taken in the underground parking garage where I work. It wasn't too long after that pic was taken before I had an email show up in my inbox with a link to it. It was 3 degrees to get to me: picture taker, co-worker, another Roadster owner (who works here and knows me). The non-owners said they weren't jealous. Not even a little. So, I replied that since they weren't jealous, I guess I didn't need to offer them a ride in it.

A similar story happened to me the first day I drove my Roadster to work. A former co-worker who left my company 2 years ago IM'd me out of the blue a link to Twitter of a picture someone else had posted of my car sitting in front of my building with a "Whose car is this?" caption. My former co-worker asked "Did you happen to ever get a Tesla?"

I checked my blinker lights, and all are working. The duty cycle is 50% (~.5s on, ~.5s off), so your explanation is plausible.

I'm guessing that's owner Eric (poster "Eric and Renee" from the Tesla Motors Website). At least I've surmised that Eric has a copper colored roadster, from the pictures posted after the recent LA rally. I would imagine someone who participated in that event can confirm or refute this.

I followed a red Roadster down the hill from Tahoe last weekend (Sunday) until he turned off at Grass Valley. Was it any of you guys? I have some driving tips for you!

This particular driver was obviously trying to extend range. The odd part was that he was going 55 or under DOWN hill, and was going over 60 mph UP hill. Needs a little practice at this single pedal driving stuff, me thinks!

Interesting ... what was the speed limit (55 or 65) ? I can understand the 55 downhill part -- extending range thru regen -- although some drivers advocate coasting because you can't regen enough to compared to the extra distance you get coasting versus the energy spent to travel that much extra with the slower (after regen) speed.

Which one is the more efficient technique for a Roadster (Prius might be different) ? How much of it depends on cdA (higher speed if coasting) ?

The problem with trying to drive a Tesla Roadster efficiently is that it is no fun. It is just too tempting to floor it. You can be efficient for about 5 minutes, then you waste it all with a 30 mph to 80 mph acceleration burst.

On ramps for the interstate are the worst for efficiency, but they are the most fun part of the day.
Especially when they are the on ramps with the red/green lights to manage traffic.

65 for most of it.

I can understand the 55 downhill part -- extending range thru regen
I can understand 55 downhill only if the uphill is also that speed or less. Going slower downhill with the misguided idea that you get more back with regen, and then can go 65+ uphill is a bit silly.

Every car and every situation is different. However, going faster uphill than down hill is never (and I don't like to say never) going to be a winner.

Prius HAS to be different. I'm an EV driver, however... just stuck behind the wheel of a Prius on this trip since we had to gain 7,200 feet pulling a trailer over 100 miles. Our Prius is our camping SUV of course.

You can be efficient for about 5 minutes
This driver was doing his best for about 40 minutes. I drive pretty darn slow as a general rule - and especially when towing a trailer with an overloaded Prius with zero towing capacity. I was comfortable going at least 5 mph faster than the Roadster was going - at least downhill.

Extremely random yellow roadster sighting (my first one I've seen in the flesh) in Beaufort SC of all places. Never in my life would I have expected to see it in such a small town in sc.

At first I couldn't believe my eyes and had to laugh to myself when my immediate gut reaction was to follow him to a gas station to talk to him about the car.

That Oslo picture is kinda interesting. It's from the opening of the election run for our "Left" party (which today is a liberal centrist party). Have that party actually bought a Roadster or is just one of their supporters an owner ? Wonder how they got that car.
