There was a Glacier Blue Roadster that missed the photo shoot. There was also a MiniE (http://www.genesisenergycorp.com/mini/) there as well.

For the record, that was in Sag Harbor, NY, which is out in the Hamptons at the eastern tip of Long Island. Also in the photo set was a Ferrari California.

Hi all,

I'm a newbie who has been interested in and rooting for Tesla for a while. As a DeLorean owner, Tesla reminds me a lot of DMC (both have strong ties to Lotus, both sought to build a better/different car than the rest of the industry, etc.), but I'm certainly hoping Tesla's story ends a bit better.

Anyway, after setting up an event for our local DeLorean club with Mike Falcone and Dan Myggen from the Menlo Park store (they gave us an amazing tour -- even back into the final assembly building where they don't normally take people) and then getting to take a Roadster for a 120mph test drive (wheee! (http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq76/ryanjmc/115mph.jpg)), I'm now enamored with the car.

Funnily enough, I started seeing them a whole lot more after that event. Three in three days, in fact. One on the road (southbound 101 near Millbrae), then VP13 with a ripped-open dashboard parked outside of Spiedo Restaurant in downtown San Mateo (was with my visiting-from-out-of-town-mom, so I was too busy showing her the car to take pics...I wonder if they were upgrading its interior to 2010?), and then the next afternoon, also in downtown San Mateo, I saw #176 in glacier blue with its hardtop on:

http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq76/ryanjmc/Roadster.jpg

You guys have a wonderful board and great community here. It's been fun to read up on!

P.S. Sorry for the long post, but one more thing: if anyone would like to see pics of our DeLorean club tour of Tesla, click here (http://www.evisionsphoto.com/gallery/v/mark/events/Car+Stuff/DMC_Events/TESLA_TOUR/). I'm this guy (http://www.evisionsphoto.com/gallery/v/mark/events/Car+Stuff/DMC_Events/TESLA_TOUR/DSC01098.JPG.html).

I was in San Francisco this past weekend for a visit. As I was checking out of my hotel, I overheard another guest say "The Tesla is here." Sure enough, out at the curb, a green Roadster with manufacturing plates was sitting, and the driver giving rides to a line of visitors. As it happens, they were all in town for a wedding, and it seems the bride's sister works for Tesla Motors. You could see the eager anticipation among them all.

After I left the hotel, I happened to catch this shot of the car. I was close enough to hear the passenger repeating how "amazing" the car was.

Amazing indeed.

And one of these days, I'm hoping for a ride myself!

I get excited when I see one in the wild, and I drive one! There are about 50 Roadsters in the Seattle area, but given the total number of cars here, it's a very small probability that I'll cross paths with another one. It's happened once in the 9 months I've had mine.

We live in Ventura and my wife commutes to Santa Barbara so if you ever see a cute blonde following you, no worries, she's just part of the "Teslarazzi". We are both big car fans so whenever we see exotics in our travels we take a picture to show the other, fun little game we play.

My in-laws live in Carpinteria and we are up there alot so if you ever need a navigator or just someone to give it a bath, let me know!

Yes, sometimes referred to as the "Anti-Martin (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/news-articles-events/3509-california-dreaming-driving-sunshine.html#post38669)" car (as in Matter / Anti-Matter ).
Also, Martin got the personalized plates for both cars ("Mr.Tesla" & "My.Tesla") so they are almost a matched set.

Ahhhhh... Is that the Elise Krypton Green??

I almost switched my color at the last minute to get it, but I chickened out.

Oww, I'd like to see it in real life, photos have a hard teim rendering the color.

I remember seeing a Krypton Green Elise in Hong-Kong at night 10+ years ago and I thought it was a great color.

Another downtown San Mateo sighting here in the Bay Area, from Super Bowl Sunday morning. This time it was VP6.

I wonder if this is the same Tesla employee who I spotted with VP13 parked half a block from this spot a few months ago (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/tesla-roadster/1290-random-roadster-sightings-27.html#post37180). Perhaps it's someone with a penchant for Very Orange who grabs the VO cars any chance he/she gets.

I remember the pre-production days when we were all waiting for our Roadsters. If you had the rare sighting of seeing someone wearing a Tesla hat, they either worked for the company or were waiting for their car. Last week I was visiting Boston and was outside Faneuil Hall when I spotted someone wearing a Tesla hat. The introvert in me approached the older gentleman and inquired if he had a Roadster? "Nope, my son's friend's boss owns one." My, how this Tesla stuff has caught on. Then today, my son was watching a baseball game & froze the screen to show me a guy with a Tesla hat in the crowd in Chicago's Wrigley Field. Anyone recognize him?

If it wasn't for the blue stripe over the rear wheel arches of this car (http://www.autogespot.com/nl/viewimages.php?id=c214748364829062010230942) I would have thought the owner damaged the front end and had it replaced with a color-mismatched front end.

Thanks for enlightening me. Knowing the one was modeled after the Thunderbird 1 paint makes a bit more sense.

As for the Eclectic one, I'd never seen the Eclectic logo before so it looked very weird and out of place. I'm kind of surprised it's not on the doors/side of the car as well.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I was taking someone for a spin when I was spotted, so like the guy said, I really did rip it out of the corner.

I'm not surprised this is the first time you've seen an Ontario "Green Vehicle" plate, because mine was the very first one ever issued (look at the number!).

I'm not surprised this is the first time you've seen an Ontario "Green Vehicle" plate, because mine was the very first one ever issued (look at the number!).

When I found out that the Tesla Roadster was the only vehicle eligible in Ontario for the new Green plates (and $8500 in incentives), I checked and found out that custom plates were not available. The Toronto store had, so far, taken out numbers "001" to "003". So I asked Tesla Toronto if they could skip a few numbers and get me another "Double O" number that might be ideal to go along with a sexy sports car.

What I thought would be an easy task instead was actually a bit of work for Sarah at Tesla Toronto. It turned out that their local vehicle registry plate office did not have my "Double O" number and the Government did not keep records of which office got what allotment of plates. After she made several phone calls to other offices, I have heard that she was successful but I won't get my hopes up until I see the plates on the car. Then I will enjoy a martini "shaken, not stirred".

Of course, my first sighting of a Tesla Roadster in the wild would happen while I was visiting California.

We were driving south this afternoon on "the 405" coming into Los Angeles when ahead of us was a Radiant Red Roadster. I got the license plate but it might not be appropriate to post that info in this forum. My companions in the car were very excited because I had been telling them about my upcoming delivery of the car and then there it was.

It was a beautiful sight to see.

Yesterday, I'm guessing for being such a nice Northern California September morning, I also got to count three Roadsters in that bunch - a black one on Foothill, a radiant red one on Moody, and an electric blue one on Skyline. Too bad I didn't have time to do the same thing...

I live in Washington. There are about 45 Roadsters in the state. Aside from mine, there is only one other yellow one in the state--it's in the same town, of course. Darn copycat. (Actually he bought his first).

A couple of weeks ago I was driving downtown and hey--a yellow Tesla! It must be Dave. But wait...that's not his car! WTF?

I sent mail to a few people asking if they knew about a new yellow Tesla in the area. Two of them responded and said that somebody from out-of-state was visiting with a yellow Tesla. Not the same person! One was from Idaho, one was from British Columbia. So briefly our yellow Tesla population doubled...

My California trip is coming to an end so we spent the day in Yountville (Napa wine country). The hotel we stayed at and a winery we visited were LEED certified which requires the facility to have a charging capability for EVs. We were walking on the main street at lunch when an orange Roadster went quietly driving by.

So I actually got to see two Roadsters in the wild during my visit to the Tesla state.

It is regrettable how mis-informed the public can be. If you go into the redliners forum site where they spotted Doug_G, there is the comment from a "Senior Member" about the Tesla Roadster: "cool summer car. but they stopped producing them to focus on a 4 door version."

Just noticed this now. This was taken during a break at the roadster rally through Berlin a few days ago. We had a blast parading through the crowded inner city and by all the tourist landmarks. Especially since we were the main attraction there for a little while. ;)
A couple of days prior to this event we drove six Roadsters in a convoy from Hamburg to Berlin. Unfortunately I can't post photos here. But if you're interested you can go here and click through the pics: http://www.facebook.com/pages/eRaca/223528420798?v=photos&ref=mf

I know this isn't fair, because this wasn't random, but while out for coffee, we came across this MG roadster. I always remembered them as being small, but the Tesla was shorter.

Sadly, here in Texas, few seem to know anything about electric vehicles. I am frequently asked about my Lotus or asked if this is a "kit car." While out for coffee, many more people stopped to look at the MG than the Tesla.

My headlights are fogged, too! Does this eventually clear up? I feel somewhat defensive when people feel the need to inform me of the fog and that 'you ought to get that taken care of'. I'll swing by Tesla the next time in Menlo Park if they're still fogged.

The fog tends to go in time, and comes back occasionally. There's a whole thread on the heated headlamps here Heated Headlamps (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/3745-Heated-Headlamps)

Remember, they're coming over from rainy England.

Thanks for the info - I have the heated assembly (2011 VIN), so it appears that didn't solve the problem.

I'll tell you what worked for me. When the Tesla Ranger is in town, tell him/her that your headlights fog. I was busy working, so I didn't see what was done, but they haven't fogged since and it's been over a month and it has rained several times since.

RE: fogging headlights

After I removed the lamps and replaced them w/ HIDs I haven't had any fogging. Not sure if it would have gone away on its own, it was "unsealing" the housings when I replaced the bulbs that allowed the air to equalize, or the HID bulbs themselves but something fixed it.

Worst case you could open up the housing and hit it w/ a hair dryer.

mpt
03-08-2011, 01:56 PM
I've heard that simply opening them to the atmosphere for a while does the trick and have heard speculation that our Xenon update works because we open the housing around the wiring just enough to let them breath.

I had one of my headlights re-sealed by the Tesla Ranger, and it's been fine ever since. Unfortunately since then I've seen the other one fog once, so I should have had him give the same treatment to both.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum has a Fusion Red Roadster on display.

It attracted a lot of attention, with all sorts of excited gawkers talking about it.

I don't think anyone noticed that there was another one out in the parking lot.

http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1525&d=1301271422

The Canadian Government got the first Roadster in Ottawa, although you wouldn't know it because they only display it at shows (and temporarily at the museum). I really scooped them on the Green Vehicle license plate number, though!

Now to see if I can spot the yellow Roadster that is rumored to be in town...

The car was incredibly clean; I swear my car wasn't that clean coming off the truck. There was no evidence it had ever been on the road.

I think they did it to promote the "Green Vehicle" plates. Funny since that is an Ontario program, not Transport Canada.

Only BEVs and PHEVs qualify. No PHEVs are currently on the list, no doubt because none are yet available.

When I bought my Roadster, it was the only car on the list. Now there's the "smart Canada, 2011 smart fortwo". Not sure when it was added. Interestingly the battery pack is just shy of the size required to qualify for the full rebate.

Electric Vehicles: Eligible for Incentive Program (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/electric/ev-vehicle-list.shtml)

Also bear in mind that they distribute the license plates to all of the MTO and Service Ontario offices around the province. So what number you get depends on where you register the car. I'd be surprised if they've actually issued 214 plates already.

Curiously, although mine was in fact the very first qualifying car to get the plates, it was sheer luck that I got 001. I asked Hans to register the car on Day 1 of the incentive program (July 2, 2010), so I could get the $8500 rebate, and he just happened to go to the office that had plate 001!

You're right Doug...if I licensed my Roadster at my local Service Ontario office, I would have had green plate # 86 or 87...I asked Sarah to try to find me #5 and she was able to find it!

I rather doubt that TM Toronto can continue this practise of locating specific numbered plates as it must be very time consuming, especially since Tesla is not the only vehicle that now qualifies...

No, although there is at least one ex-Formula 1 team boss lives locally, he's quite interested in sustainable motoring, I think.

Out of interest, I see an Elise every day as I drive through Shelford, and I often wonder if I've ever seen a Tesla but not noticed that it wasn't an Elise. Apart from the maker's badges and the lack of exhaust, what would be the key recognition points?

Apparently he was in a combo disabled (with placard)+EV spot, so felt it was an appropriate spot even though the car wasn't charging.
I guess the Roadster wasn't charging either but was also taking advantage of the free long term (up to 30 days) EV parking perk there.
Apparently LAX has lots of EV spots with free parking and no stipulation that you must be charging.
With EVs starting to rollout in large numbers LAX might have to rethink their policies in future.

That was interesting, thanks. I learned that it's cool to be able to check on your charge status remotely (he went to the UK), and that those stations also have 240 and 120 Volt outlets. So the Leaf or the Roadster could have been charging if they were willing to risk their cables.

SFO used to have bare 120V plugs for their EV charging spots - they've since been replaced w/ ChargePoint chargers (not sure if they're free or not).

There is a trick where you can store the excess cable in your trunk by only latching the right side. Won't stop someone determined but keeps it a bit tidier.

It's the bright orange contrasted with the electric blue that makes my eyes bleed. It's cool!

I've always wanted to get a photo of my car with a Lotus Elise. Finally met an Elise owner today...

Did you drive it?

No, they were busy totally kicking my ass at Autocross. My first time out. I think it was their 100th.

Gotta say, though, very nice people.

My first meet with an Elise we exchanged drives. He was blown away, I thought ai was back at Disneyland's Autopia ride.

I just got my Green Machine back from its second annual service yesterday. As Mark from Newport Beach store was getting it out of the truck a guy drove up, really excited. He'd seen the truck on the freeway and tried to follow it, but lost it in the maze of little roads where I live; then he drove around in circles for a while until he spotted it. Turns out he's a movie producer, and he wants a roadster for a cameo in a movie he's about to film here in San Diego! He hadn't seen one "in the flesh" yet.

I got to see your Green Machine up close and personal while my Stealth Fighter (ok I don't have a good nickname yet) was getting some new wheels (old ones are up for sale).

The going rate for a picture car on a feature or commerical shoots is 1,200 to 1,500 a day for exotics like the Roadster. Some owners also insist on an employee to do nothing but watch out for the car for them. A common practice with shoots in private homes.

Saw a pre-2.5 BRG Roadster with the vanity plate "PV EV" near the W hotel in SF last night. Looked pretty sweet parked out front in the choice valet spot. Really wish California would come up with another solution for those HOV stickers, though.

I'm really glad that Virginia uses HOV license plates for HOV around DC/Virginia. I'm not sure if I'd have put stickers on my car.

I know I'll get stopped at least once in July (no, officer, that's not just a faded yellow sticker in the rear window...), but I've never had anything stuck to the paint of any car I've owned, and I'm not starting now.

Today, I became another random sighting as, at a stop light, I could see the guy behind me fiddling with his iPad to take a picture. Kinda funny the hand contortions you have to do to do that.

Yeah, that one gets around. It has been noticed and mentioned on the forums before.
