None of these badges mean anything anymore. Take Mercedes as an example, you can order AMG "Trim" and there are many of them out there. below is a snippet from Mercedes. Same deal with BMW by the way.

Now take the new Highland M3P. Their is mention of Plaid and there are even plaid style emblems on the seats yet the performance is similar to the outgoing model.

Mercedes-Benz allows you to upgrade nearly any model with an AMG trim or styling package. This means you can customize your vehicle to look exactly like an AMG car, minus the all-important AMG engine. AMG trim options include:

  • A rear spoiler to give the car a sportier look and reduce drag
  • Body styling with a polished chrome cross-strut, deep front air dam
  • 18” or 19” AMG style wheels
  • Contoured sport front seats and sport steering wheel
  • AMG Floor Mats
  • Sport Suspension for enhanced handling and precision
  • Sport brakes
You can also opt for the AMG Night package, which incorporates jet black versions of the AMG styling elements.
Then there is the other method of stripping everything off so one wonders what model/trim could this car be however most of the time it is the bottom of the line in disguise.
